UNTED STATES HYMAN ROSEN, or new Yon-n, n. YQ
y 1,536,530 PATENT' OFFICE.
BUTTON.
Application :tiled July 24, 1922. Serial No. 577,209.
" To all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that HYMAN Rosan, citizen ot' the United States, residing at the city ot New York, in the county and State of New York, has invented certain newiand useful improvements in Buttons', of which the fol lowing .is a specification.
This invention relates to buttons.
rangements and geometrical formation so as lo provide ornamental devices adapted for use indccorating or draping garments, such as ladies dresses and 'thelike y r-inotlier object is to provide a new and useful decorative or ornamental device tor decorating or draping garments, such as ladies? dresses and the like, which shall be simple and cheap of manufacture and readily attachable to. the garments. y
Other "objectsfo't this invention will` in part be obvious and in `part hereinafter pointed out. y
llliththese objects in view, the invention accordingly consists in the combinations of elements and arrangement of parts more fully set torth in the following description and ot which the scope of application will be pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the drawing accompanying this specification andforming part thereof and show- `ing one illustrative embodiment of this nvcntion,
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-sectional view ot a buttonembodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof out along line 2*2 of Fig. 1; and li" n 3 is a plan view of an ornamentadapted tor decorating a garment, formed from a plurality ot' buttons embodying my invention and suitably arranged and interconnected.
Referring in detail to the drawing, particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the button embodying this invention and there shown is seen to comprise two halvesp 10, 11, the upper half being of larger diameter than the lower halt 11, which telescopes thereinto will be clear from Fig. 1. The upper halt itorms the exposed face of the button and is accordingly suitably shaped to give an ornamental contour. Thus, in the form shown in the drawing, the. upper half 1s substantiallyspheroidal in shape as shown One; object thereof .is to provide a button of the material.'l The lower half comprises a shell and alike covering 1G. The upper and lower halves are formed in suitable button dies, preferably. such as described in my co-pending application,` Serial Number 525.999 tiledon the th vday ot December 1921, where l havefully described andv claimed a button-making machine particulai-ly adapted for making buttons embody ingI the present invention.
Extending from the.' periphery of thebutton are onev or more stems 17 In the form shown in the thawing, this stem comprises a metal wire,`but .l contemplate also the use oi' braid, cord, or ribbon and like material for this purpose. rEhe stem 17 is preferably inserted between the annular interfolded portions 11i, 15, respectively,.o't the upper and lower halves of the button, the stem havingan attaching portion 17a` bent substantially at right angles thereto, `where wire is employed, and which attaching portion is secured between the telescoping halves of thebutton simultaneously with the closing of the two shells in the button-male ing process as more fully explained and described in my copending application "for patent aforo-mentioned. y Y
In Fig. 3 1s illustrated an ornament made of a cluster of buttons constructed in accordn 2O arranged concentrically about the nuole?v us 18. It will be seen that the row ot buttons 19 comprises individual buttons interconnected by stems 19" which are common to two contiguous. buttons. Likewise the row of buttons 20 are interconnected by stems 2S common to Vtwo contiguous buttons of that row,and the inner row 19 is connected at intervals to the central button 18 by stems 191 common to the central button and to the particular button of the row connected thereto. Likewise 'the row ot buttons 2O is connected at intervals to the row 19 by stems 201 comm-on to two contiguous buttons ot the `two rows.
Vot the bottom of the button, so that the eXi posed faces cooperate to form a harmonious group to give a neat and ornamental effect.
Itwill also be noted that the interconnecting ot the individual buttons to eachother and of the rows to each other and to the central button is all made possible by reason of the stem l? of the buttons extending from the periphery thereof. It will be understood, of course, that where a desired group for ornamental purpose is required, the button stems are arranged within the process oi*l construction so that they may form a common stem for two buttons. Or, where stems of flexible material such as tape, ribbon or thread are employed, the desired group may be easily accomplished by stitching, tying or otherwise se,- curing together the individual stems extending from the periphery of the buttons.
An Vornamental device formed from buttons embodying this invention, such for er;n ample as shown in Fig. 3, may easily be secured as a wholeto a ladys dress or like garment for Adecorating the same by stitching, pinning or otherwise securing the bottom faces ot' one or more buttons ot the goods to the surface to be decorated.
It will thus be clear that l have provided a button. which may be easily and inexpensively n'ianuiactured and which accomplishes in a practical manner the objects hereinbetore set forth. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent is:
l. A, button of the character described comprisingA two interlocking halves and a lined-stem extending from the periphery ot the button and secured between said halves on the interlockment thereof.
2. A button of the character described, comprising .a shaped upper half, a lower half 'titted thereinto, and a lined stem eX- tending from the periphery ot the button and held between two halves.
3. A button ot' the character described comprising an upper halt, a lower halt fitted thereinto, said upper haltl consisting of a suitably shaped shell and said lower halt con'iprising a shell adapted to lit into said tirst mentioned shell, and a stem having a. portion extending peripherally from the button, and a portion extending into said shells and held therebetween.
e". A button ot the character described, comprising an upper halt', a lower half litted thereinto, said upper half consisting of a suitably shaped shell and a cover therefor and said lower hall comprising a shell and a cover therefor, and a stem having a portion extending peripherally from the button and a portion extending and held between said two halves.
5. As an article of manufacture, an ornamental unit for draping or decorating surfaces, comprising a plurality ot buttons having stems extending from the periphery thereof and connecting each pair ot contiguous buttons, said buttons comprising each an upper and lower halt fitted to each other, and said stems extending into said halves and held therebetween.
6. As an article ot' manufacture, an ornae mental unit tor draping or decorating sur faces, comprising a plurality of'buttons, each termed ot' two interlocking halves, and stems extending from the periphery of the buttons tor connecting each pair of c-ontiguous buttons, the stems being. secured between said halves on the interloclnnent thereof.
ln testimony whereotI I aliix my signature.
HYMAN ROSEN.
