IN VENTOR B y /*/y mm ftos'ezz A TTORNEY Patented Dec. 22, 1925.
warren stares HYMAN ROSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ORNAMEN'IAL DEVICE.
Application filed July 31, 1922. Serial No. 578,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I-IYMAN Rosnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful improvements in Ornamental Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ornamental devices. More particularly, it is directed to a decorative device that may be employed in draping or ornamenting ladies wearing apparel such as dresses, skirts, etc., or the material from which such wearing apparel is made.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall comprise a neat and ornamental decorative unitwhich may be readily attached either as an insert or superimposed on the garment or the material from which it is made.
Another object is to provide a device of the character described which shall be comparatvely cheap to manufacture and cilicient in use to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
Certain features herein shown and described are shown, described and claimed in my co-pending applications Serial Nos. 525,999 and 577,209, filed in the United States Patent Office on the 30th day of December, 1921, and the 24th day of July,
' 1922, respectively, and accordingly are not claimed herein.
With the above exception, the invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which Will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
- In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention Fig. l is an elevational view showing an embodiment of the invention in use as an insert on a ladys skirt to decorate the front panel thereof;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a length of the decorative material; and
Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view out along line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing the decorative device embodying the invention there shown is seen to comprise a plurality of suitably shaped ornamental buttons 10 interconnected by means of short stems 11 extending substantially at the end of one diameter of the button. Running parallel to said diameter to each side of the button is an attaching border 12, 12, which may be in the form of a tape, lace, braid or other like material of suitable ornamental design. The borders are secured to the buttons by means of stems 13, 13 extending from the ends of the diameter at right angles to the first mentioned diameter.
In the form shown in the drawing, the particular button 10 used is of the type described and claimed in my co-pending applications aforementioned and comprises a suitably shaped shell 14 which is covered by a cloth covering 15, and a bottom shell 16 similarly covered by a cloth covering 17. The bottom shell 16 telescopes into the upper shell and the attaching and interconnecting stems 11, 13, and 13 are preferably secured to the button in the process of the closing of the two shells.
In the particular embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, the borders 12 and 12' consist of strips of braid 18 from which extend at spaced intervals threads 19 transversely to the length of the braid, and these threads 19 form the stems 13, 13 whereby the borders are attached to the row of buttons 10. It will be readily under-' stood that the inter-connecting stems 11 and the attaching of the borders 12, 12 may be accomplished simultaneously with the closing of the two shells of the button.
In Fig. 1, an application of the invention is shown applied to a ladys skirt where the ornamental unit 20 embodying this invention is employed as an insert in the front of the garment and bridges the two open edges 21, 22, where the material of the skirt has been slit or left open for the insert. The insert 20 is secured in place by lines of stitches 23, 23 in a very quick and simple operation, thus obviating the necessity of separately sewing on each button 10 where such buttons are employed for like decoraive purposes. Of course, a unit such as 20 may be superimposed on the material of the skirt in like manner by stitches taken through the border 12, 12 and the material of the skirt.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this inventionv are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in theembodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted asillustrative and. not in a limiting sense. 7
Having: thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the character described, a plurality of'ornamental members secured to each otherto form a continuous-length by means heldv Within the ornamental member and extending peripherally therefrom and ail-attaching border secured to each side of said members parallel to said length.
2. In a device of the character described, a plurality of buttons connected at the extremities of one diameter of the button by means. held within the button and extending peripherally therefrom and an attaching border connected to each side of the buttons at-the extremities of a diameter of the-buttons at an angle to the first mentioned diameteiz In a device of the character described, a plurality of buttons connected at the-eX- trem-itiesof one diameter of the. button by means held Within the button and extending peripherally therefrom and an attaching borderconnectedto each side. of the buttons at the extremities of a: diameter of the buttons at right angles to the first mentioned di ameter.
t. In a device of the character described, a plurality "of buttons interconnected by stems extending peripherally thereof in alignment with one diameter of the button to form a continuous string, other spaced stems extending from each button transversely of the string, and an attaching border secured to said last mentioned stems.
The herein described decorative unit comprising an attaching border, a string of ornamental buttonseach comprising a pair of interlocked shells and having a stem held between said-shells and extending peripherally of the. button attheextremities of oneidiameter for interconnecting said buttons in a continuous string, and similar stems extending. peripherally of the button along the diameter at right angles to said first mentioned diameter and secured at spaced intervals to said attaching border.
(.3. A. decorative unit comprising in combination with a pair ofspaced longitudinal borders, a plurality of buttons interposed between said borders, stems extending longitudinally of the borders from. each pair of contiguous buttons for: interconnecting the latter into a continuous string, and a stem extending from each button transversely of the borders and secured to the latter.
7. In combination, a string of buttons each having a. pair ofdiametricallyv opposed stems extending transversely of the string, and an attaching border secured longitudinally of said string to each side thereof by means of the said stems.
8. In combination, a plurality of buttons, stems joining saidbuttons to form a string thereof, other stems extending from the buttons transversely of the string, and an attaching border secured longitudinally of said string by means of the last mentioned stems.
