Description

March 14; 1933.
S, SHElNDEL-MAN SWEATER Filed Jan.
I 42 9 \x i INVENTOR Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UNITED STATES SAMUEL snnmnnmann, or LAWRENCE, NEW YoRx SWEATER Application filed January 3,1933. SeriaI- No. 49,873.
This invention relates to garments and more specifically to an article of apparel suitable for feminine wear.
A major object of the invention is in the provision of a garment having a body portion of a single piece of knitted goods.
Another object is in the provision'of a garment in which the body and sleeve portions are integrally made and to which are suitably secured cuff and Waistband portions and a collar of pleasing design. I
A still further object is to provide an article of apparel in which the integral body and sleeve portions are arranged with stripes of pleasing pattern and color, and though the stripes are arranged vertically in the whole garment when stretched in fiat condition, these stripes when the garment is worn appear vertically disposed on the body portion and horizontal on the sleeve portions.
Another important object of the invention resides in a new method of constructing a garment which consists in providinga substantially rectangular blank of knitted mate rial doubling it over on its central longitudinal dimension, suitably stitching along the open bottom from each lower outside corner toward the vertical middle of the body portion to provide sleeve portions, affixing cuff portions and a waistband portion, cutting out a proper neck portion and attaching a suitable collar thereto.
A further object resides in providing a blank of knitted material having contrasting colored stripes, said material being knitted on a conventional type of fiat or circular knitting machine having a conventional striping attachment which produces only horizontal stripes on the material. A blank so pro duced would have its wales transverse to the stripes and when formed into a garment, the
striping would be vertical and the wales run horizontally across the body.
A still further object is in the provision of a garment having a one piece body and sleeve portion, seamless shoulders and stripes vertically disposed in the body portion and horizontal in the sleeve portions with the wales of the material across the body.
These and many other objects and advantages will be moreclearly seen from the fol-.
lowing specification, description of the ac,-
cOmpanying drawing'whic'h illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention andthex manner of constructing same, and in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates in perspective a garment constructed in accordance with the invention. a 7
Figs. 2 to 6, inclusive, indicate the various steps in' a preferred method for producing the garment illustrated in 'Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 indicates the manner in which the material blankis knitted. I In greater detail, the garment 10 com: prises a front and back body portion 11 having integral sleeve portions 12. The lower portion of the body portion is preferably provided with 'a stretchable waist band 13, and the sleeve portions similarly provided with stretchable cuffs 14 An opening 15 for the neck of the wearer is indicated and may be arranged with a collar 16 of pleasing conformity.
'The top portion of the garment along the sleeves and shoulders is seamless as indicated "at 17 and the material from which the body and sleeve portion is integraHy'made may be arranged with stripes ofpleasing design and color as shown at 18.
The garment above described maybe constructed in the following manner;
A piece of material is knitted of a suitable width such as indicated by. the dimensionl ine W and of a length L commensurate to the needs of the finished garment. This piece of'material is stretchable in all direc-' tions but has its wales running alongthe dimensionW One preferred method of producing the where the material is shown as produced by a conventional form of fiat or circular knitting machine. When so produced its length is greater than its width and the stripes are horizontally disposed. When severed along 'theline A and employed as hereinafter deblank of material is best illustrated in Fig. 7
scribed, a garment having vertical stripes and horizontal wales is produced.
Thematerial may then be folded along a I line 19. The-result of this folding is shown in Fig. 3," and'then trimmed away as at 20,
(Fig. 4), to shape the piece of material for the garment.
The material is then stitched as shown at 21 and the neck portion cut out as shown at and is then ready for application for the sleeve cuffs, waistband and collar as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 6.
It is also conceivable to form the.neck opening during the knitting of the piece as represented by the numeral 15a (Fig. 2).
It is now apparent, that a garment of esthetic appearance and beautifully striped and colored may be simple and inexpensively made. The pleasing effect of the seamless shoulders and flaring sleeves is greatly de sired by the discriminating wearer, and of greatest importance is the increased wearing qualities of the garment due to the seamless shoulders and lack of seam where the sleeves 1 meet the body, it being proven time and again that'garments of this class which have inset sleeves are weakest at that point.
WVhile'the above specification is quite detailed in describing a preferred garment structure and fmethod for making the same, no undue limitations in the breadth of the invention as defined by the appended claims,
are intended. I
What is claimed as new and desired to be obtained by Letters Patent. is:
1.- In a knitted. garment to be worn by fe- 7 males, a body portion having a longitudinal over-all width measuring from cufi' to culf of the arms of the female when-the same are in a horizontal outstretched position, and having a vertical length substantially uniform throughout the width of the garment, the wales of the body portion running in the same horizontal direction, said garment having front and back portions and a defined neck opening, Width as to extend from the shoulders to below the bust of the wearer, the front and back portions of the garment being-joined together at the bottom defining sleeve portions of a width substantially equal to the width of the garment.
2. A new article of manufacture, a garment of the class described comprising a substantiallyrectan' ular piece of knitted material provided with a neck opening and having its Wales running in the direction of its longer dimensiolnthe material being doubled over along its medial longitudinalline and stitched together at the bottom from each outside lower corner towards the vertical middle of the material, thereby forming sleeve portions and a body portion, said garment being of such width as to extend from the shoulders to below the bust portion of the wearer.
3. A new article of manufacture, a gar-' ment of the class described comprising a substantially rectangular piece of knitted material provided with a neck opening and havthe body portion beingof such ing its wales running in the direction of its longer dimension, and having colored stripes coextensive with its shorter dimension, the material being doubled over along its medial longitudinal line and stitched together at the bottom from each outside lower corner towards the vertical middle of the material,
thereby forming sleeve portions and a body
