Be it known that 1, Honor KLEIN, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of taken through the base on the line 3-S of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Siphon-Tube Bases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to tubes or pipes utilized for drawing liquid from a container having sediment or foreign matter at the bottom thereof, and more particularly to a base or terminal for such tubes or pipes to prevent the said sediment or solid matter from entering the tube or pipe and enabling only clear liquid to enter the same The objects of the invention are to provide a base or terminal of the character described embodying novel features of construction whereby clear liquid may be drawn from the extreme bottom of a con'- tainer containing sediment or foreign matter; toprovide a cup-shaped member having a rigid upstanding projection on its bottom within the rim to receive the end of an elastic tube or pipe,'said projection being formed to permit passage of liquid from the interior of said cup-shaped member into said tube or pipe, the sides of said member excluding foreign matter from the interior thereof; to provide an improved construction for said projection to receive the end of a tube or the like whereby ample clearance between said tube and said projection for the passage of liquid is provided; to provide in such a device means for limiting the movement of the tube or pipe onto said projection and maintain the end of said tube or pipe in spaced relation to the bottom of said cup-shaped member to permit passage of liquid from withinthe said member into said tube; and to obtain other results and advantages as may be brought out by the following description.

For the purpose of illustrating the uses of my invention I have shown the base or terminal A connected to the end of a flexible tube B and utilized for withdrawing clear liquid from a container G, such as a crock, which has sediment or foreign matter D at the bottom thereof.
The base A is substantially circular and comprises a disk-like body portion 1 provided with an upstanding annular wall 2 on one side thereof, the body portion 1 be ing adapted to rest upon the bottom of the container with the annular wall 2 projecting upwardly through the sediment in the container to a point above the surface of the sediment as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The base A is thus substantially cupshaped and is preferably formed of a heavy material which will cause the base to sink by gravity to the bottom of a container. Arranged substantially axially of the body 1 and within the annular upstanding wall 2 is a projection 3 which serves to connect the base A to the end of a tube, pipe, or the like. In the present in stance I have shown the base A used in connection with a flexible tube 13, and the tube is connected to the base by telescopically forcing the end of the tube over the projection 8, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the tube being held in position by friction. In Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 the projection 3 shown as substantially rectangular in crosssection and formed with, longitudinal grooves at in opposite sides thereof which extend the full length of the projection, and merge into the body portion 1 of the base within the annular upstanding wall 2. These grooves t thus provide clearance between the projection 3 and the walls of the tube B, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 5, so that the liquid in the container C can pass into the end of the tube B as indicated y t e arrows. For the purpose of pro venting the end of the tube B from being slipped over the projection 3 into engagement with the body portion 1 of the base so as to prevent liquid from entering the tube, the projection 3 is provided at a point intermediate its length with shoulders 5 which are engaged by the end of the tube as it is slipped over the projection 3.
Vvith this construction it will be seen that the upstanding annular wall 2 of the base will prevent the sediment or foreign matter D from entering .within the annular wall and passing into the tube B, and at the same time the end of the tube is positioned in close proximity to the bottom of the container and even below the surface of the sediment. The clear liquid can thus flow over the top of the wall 2 and then downwardly below the end of the tube B and up ardly through the grooves 1 in the projection 8 out of the container to a desirable point.
A base constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly adaptable for use with flexible and elastic siphon tubes, such as a rubber tube, the base being constructed to rest by action of gravity upon the bottom of the container and penetrating the sediment therein whereby clear liquid may be withdrawn from the extreme bottom of the container and the sediment of foreign matter completely excluded from the siphon tube. The rigid projection 3 enables an elastic tube to be easily and quickly slipped over it and the base 1 is held on the tube by the elasticity and frictional engagement of the tube with said projection, whereby the base can be quickly attached to and removed from a tube and interchangeably used with a number of tubes of substantially the same diameter. Further, the base embodying the invention can be molded or cast in one piece in one operation and without the use of undercuts or special cores, so that the cost of manufacture is small. There are no cracks or corners in the device and all parts thereof are clearly accessible so that it can be easily and thoroughly rinsed and cleaned.
lVhile I have shown and described one preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that this is for the purpose of illustrating the principles thereof only, and that many modifications and changes can be made in the detail construction of the device without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. The base has been shown as used in connection with a flexible tube, but it will be understood that it is also adaptable for use with pipes and the like which are utilized for drawing clear liquid from a container, well, or the like, having sediment in the bottom thereof. Therefore, I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself in the construction or use of my invention except as required by the following claims construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a siphon tube, the combination of an elastic tube, and a basecomprising a cupshaped body portion having a rigid upstanding projection on the bottom thereof, said projection being adapted to telescopically and frictionally receive said tube thereover and being formed with passages to permit flow of liquid between itself and said tube, said base and said tube being maintained in said connected relation by the elasticity and frictional engagement of said tube with said projection.
2. In a siphon tube, the combination of an elastic tube, and a base comprising a cupshaped body portion having an integral solid and rigid upstanding projection on the bot tom thereof to telescopically and friction-ally receive said tube thereover, said projection being formed with a longitudinal interior groove to permit liquid to flow between said tube and said projection, and said base and said tube being maintained in said connected relation by the elasticity and frictional engagement of said tube with said projection.
3. A device of the character described comprising a cup-shaped body portion having a single rigid upstanding projection on the bottom thereof to telescopically receive a tube or pipe thereover, said projection being formed with passages merging into the bottom of said body portion to permit liquid to fiow from within said body portion between said projection and said tube into said tube.
4:. A device of the character described comprising a cup-shaped body portion having a single integral solid and rig d upstanding projection on the bottom thereof to telescopically receive a tube or pipe thereover, said projection being formed with an exterior longitudinal groove merging into said bottom of the body portion to permit liquid to How from within said body portion between said projection and said tube into said tube.
