The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

Inthe drawing I have shown at a window frame construction which maybe of any desired form, said frame being pro vided with side rails 11 and 12 outwardly of which are chambers 13. Mounted in the frame are top and bottom sashes 1 1 and 15 retained in position by guide andspacing strips 16, 17 and 18. g
The outer faces of the side rails of the sashes 1 1 and 15 are provided with racks 19 and 20 respectively and substantially centrally of the window frame 10 the railll thereof is apertured in line with the racks 19 and 20 of the sashes as shown at 21 and 22, while the rail 12 is similarly ap'ertured as shown at 23 and 2 1. Gears 25 and 26 are mounted ona shaft 27 within the chamber or space 18 and extend through the apertures 23 and 241 and engage, respectively, the racks 19 and 20 on the sashes 1 1 and 15. The shaft 27 is mounted in bearings 28 and the mounting of the gears 25 and 26 is preferably such as to provide sufficient tension or friction to enable balancing means for the separate sashes, to be dispened with.
.The railll of the frame is preferably provided with a removable panel 29 held in place by screws 80, and mounted in suitable hearings on the panel 25;) are two shafts 31 and 32, the inner or free ends of which are angular in form as shown at 33 and extend through apertures in the inner face of the window frame. Key members 34:, preferably provided with lmurledheads, are de tachably mounted in connection with the angular ends of the shafts 31 and 32, and sald key members serve to rotate the Separate shafts Secured to the shaft 31 is a pawl 35 and a pawl 36 is secured to the shaft 82. These pawls are so positioned as coupling thereof to the disks 37 and to the posts 39 are in common alinement with the axis of the shaftsfll and 32 and by rotating the shafts in one direction the springs will move the pawls 35 and 36 into engagement withthe separate racks and retain the same in such position or said springs will hold said pawls in an inoperative position, in retating the shafts in the opposite direction and beyond the dead center.
It will be noted that by removing one of said strips 18 the lower sash 15 may be removed and by removing one of said strips 17, the upper panel may be removed and these strips may be secured to the side rails of the window frame by screws or in any other desired manner.
lVith my improved construction, it will be understood that the sashes 1A- and 15 may be moved upwardly and downwardly in the window frame at will by moving both of the pawls and 36 into inoperative posi tions or out of engagement with the racks on said sashes, and if it be desired to lock the sashes in an open position as shown in Fig. 2 said pawls are moved into operative position by means of the keys When the sashes are locked in an open position as shown in Fig. 2, it will be impossible to open the sashes further, but both sashes may be closed without manipulating the pawls 35 or 36. By providing the removable plate 29, the operative mechanism including the shafts 31 and 3.1, pawls 35 and 36, etc. may be removed for repair or other purposes if ever desired, and the gears 25 and 26 may be similarly mounted if desired, and various changes in and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spiritof my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A window construction of the class described comprising a sash frame, sashes mounted to move vertically in said frame, strips for retaining said sashes in predetermined position and for guiding the same in their movement and whereby the ren'ioval of a predetermined number of said strips will permit of the removal of said sashes, means involving gear and raclt constructions for retaining the sashes in predetermined positions of adjustment, manually operated means for locking the separate sashes in predetermined positions, said last named means comprising the rack, on said sashes, and pawls pivotally mounted in the frame and cooperating directly with said racks.
2. A window construction of the class described comprising a sash frame, sashes mounted to move vertically in said frame, strips for retaining said sashes in predetermined position and for guiding the same in their movement and whereby the removal of apredetermined number of said strips will permit of the removal of said sashes, means involving gear and rack constructions for retaining the sashes in predetermined positions of adjustment, manually operated means for locking the separate sashes in predetermined positions, said last named means comprising the racks on said sashes, pawls pivotally mounted in the frame and adapted to cooperate with said racks, and tensional means for moving said pawls into operative and inoperative positions.
3. A window construction of the class described comprising a sash frame, sashes mounted to move vertically in said frame, strips for retaining said sashes in predetermined position and for guiding the same in their movement and whereby the removal of predetermined number of said strips will permit of the removal of said sashes, means involving gear and rack constructions for retaining the sashes in predetermined positions of adjustn'ient, manually operated means for locking the separate sashes in predetermined positions, said last named means comprising the racks on said sashes, pawls pivotally mounted in the frame and adapted to cooperate with said racks, tensional means for moving said pawls into operative and inoperative positions, and keys for controlling the operation of said pawls.
4. A look device for window sashes comprising racks secured to one side of the separate sashes, pawls pivotally mounted in position to cooperate with said racks, tensional means for holding said pawls in operative and inoperative positions and means involving a key for manually actuating said pawls.
5. A look device for window sashes comprising racks secured to one side of the separate sashes, pawls pivot-ally mounted in position to cooperate with said racks, tensional means for holding said pawls in operative and inoperative positions, means involving a key for manually actuating said pawls, and said pawls and cooperative parts being mounted on a removable section.
6. A window construction of the class described comprising a frame, sashes movably mounted in the frame and removable therefrom, racks on the side rails of said sashes pawls mounted in one side of the frame and cooperating directly with the racks on the adjacent side rails of said sashes and means involving a key for actuating said pawls.
7. A window construction of the class de scribed comprising a frame, sashes movably mounted in the frame and removable therefrom, racks on the side rails of said sashes, pawls mounted in one side of the frame and adapted to cooperate with the racks on the adjacent side rails of said sashes, means involving a key for actuating said pawls, and tensional means controlling the separate pawls for retaining the same in operative and inoperative positions.
8. A window construction of the class described comprising a frame, sashes movably mounted in the frame and removable there from, racks on the side rails of said sashes, pawls mounted in one side of the frame and adapted to cooperate with the racks on the adjacent side rails of said sashes, means involving a key for actuating said paWls, tensional means controlling the separate pawls for retaining the same in operative and inoperative positions, and gears mounted in the other side member ofthe frame and c0- operating with the racks on the other side rails of said sashes.
