ALBERT L. AUSTIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
RECTAL DILATOR AND IRRIGATOR.
Application filed April 4,
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. Aus'rrn, a citizen of the United States,.residing at Cleveland, in the county oi Cuyahoga and State of Q hio, have invented certain new and useitul Improvements in Rectal Dilators and Irrigators, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in rectal dilator-s and irrigators, the present embodiment of the invention being particularly designed and adapted for use in the treatment of rectal diseases and disorders.
The primary object 01" the invention is to provide a generally improved instrument or appliance of the character indicated which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and etficient in use.
A further and very important object of the invention is to provide an instrument which will not only dilate the walls of the rectum but one in which the lnletand outlet ports are so arranged relative to-each other to provide for an improved circulation ot the cleansing. or treating liquid within the adjacent walls of the parts being treated as well as one in which the danger of the ports becoming clogged'will be reduced toa minimum.
A still further object is the provision of an improved irrigating member adapted to be readily inserted in or removed from the dilator body, said irrigating member being of standard form and adapted to be used in terchangeablywith dilator members or bodies Qlvarying sizes and dimensions.
A still further object is the provision of an improved tubular irrigating member provided with a removable plug or filler adapted to closethe irrigating member and form the tip or nose of the dilator head when inserted and to beremoved therefrom to form a centrally located return port or opening for the cleansing and treating liquid when used as an irrigating device after initial dilation of the parts, said cen tral irrigating member, however, forming an inlet port or opening for the introduction of treating salve or ointment by the initial application oi the latter at the base of the tubular irrigating member and thepassage of such salves or ointments upwardly through the port of the irrigating member through the medium of the removable plug or insert acting as the carrier or plunger to finally emit such salves ortreating ointments at the 1921. Serial No. 458,415.
top or apex portion of the dilator head where such treating mediums will be permitted to pass outwardly and downwardly over the dilator head and into contact with the walls of the adjacent parts. to be treated. lVith the above mentioned and other ends in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in some of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a top plan view of the improved irrigating rectal dilator with the parts. assembled preparatory to insertion and use as a dilator.
Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same partly in section.
Fig. 3, a side elevation of the interchangeable tubular irrigating member and removable plug or filler, detached.
Fig. a, a cross-sectional view, taken on line dl or Fig. 5, andillustrating in par tieular the arrangement of the port openings in the nozzle head.
Fig. 6, a side elevation of the removable plug or insert removed from the, removable tubular irrigating member.
Fig. 7, a side elevation, partly in section,
of a dilator body in different form and.
showing particularly how the central tubular irrigating member may be used therein as well as in dilator bodies of various sizes and forms.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved dilator and irrigator coinprises a hollow dilator body which may be of any suitable and convenient form, but is preferably provided with a reduced neck portion 1, having a rounded or slightly enlarged head 1, of general tapered or approximately conical i'orm as shown, said head being provided with a plurality of portopenings l arranged tangentially as shown most clearly'in Fig. l, of the drawings, and extending upwardly and outwardly as shown most clearly in Fig. '2, of the drawings.
The top or central portion of the nozzle head 1, is provided with a central opening having an upwardly inclined or tapered shoulder 1 to receive and form a seat for the similarly shaped tapered or truncated head of the tubular irrigating member hereinafter referred to. The dilator is provider with an enlarged open base portion 1, provided with internal threads and is pro 'ided at one side with a stem portion 1 forming a port communicating with the interior portion of the dilator body and adapted to be provided with a suitable hose 2, leading to a suitable vessel or appliance adapted to hold the irrigating or treating liquid.
a means of provid' ig a central irrigating port a tubular irrigating member 3, is provided said tubular member 3, ter: minating at its top in the truncated heat 3, adapted to extend into the opening at the top 01 the nozzle head 1, and to be seated within the inclined annular shoulder 1. 'lhe base or the tubular member 3, is provided with a base or bottom member 3" said base or bottom closure member 3", be ing provided with an annular flange to rest against the flange portion 1 of the dilator and being provided with internal threads adapted to be threaded within and to be removed from the correspondingl threaded portion of the base 1.
It will be seen that when the meinl with the base 3", are in assembled POSIU that an annular chamber l, is provided with in the walls oi the dilator in connnunication with the port or openin of the stem 1 and the ports 1" of the nozzle head and it will also be observed that the tubular member 3, forms a central port or opening 3 leading through the center of the dilator and extending from the tip of the nozzle head to the face of the dilator body.
As a means of closing the port formed by the tubular member 3, and particularl of forming the apex or nose of tie tapered dilator head when it is c esired to insert the latter a plug or filler member 5, is provided, said plug corresponding in length and dimensions to the opening in the tubular member 3, and being provided at its top with a tip 5, forming a continuation of the nozzle head and completing the tip or nose portion of the latter.
The base of the plug or filler 5, is preferably in the specific form of a disc head 5, adapted to rest beneath the bottom portion of the removable tubular irrigating member and to close the base of the port when the plug or filler is inserted.
lhe central port or opening 3", and the insert or plug 5, may be used as a means of applying healing salves r lotions to the top or nozzle read portion of the dilator and the surrounding walls or tissues as herein before referred to and, if desired the hose connection 2, may be utilized in creating a suction or partial vacuum within the annu lar chamber e, and through the port open ings l of the nozzle head in an obvious and well understood manner.
