Description

W. LEWINSKI.
FOUNTAIN GOMB'. APPLICATION HLBD DB0. 1s, 1912;
Patented'July 22, 1913.
Y 'lllhlllTllt STATES PATENT @FETCH 'WILLIAM LEWINSKI, OF LAKE GENEVA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD T JOHN E. BARR AND ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES S. FRENCH, BOTH OF LAKE GENEVA,
WISCONSIN.
FOUNTAIN-MB.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern l-e it known that l, YVILLIAM Lnwinsni, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Geneva, in the county of l/Valworth and State of ldiisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Combs; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of he invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improx'fements in fountain combs.
One object of the invention is to provide a fountain comb adaptedparticularly for applying medicinal preparations to the scalp and roots of the hair and having teeth arranged in such manner as to readily loosen the dandrutl and stimulate the scalp.
Another object is to provide a comb of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and by means of which the liquid may be thoroughly distributed over the scalp and applied to the roots of the hair without the liquid coming into contact with or wetting the latter.
llrith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully lescribed and claimed.
Tn the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of my improved comb; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a central lvertical sectional view of the comb; Fig. 4 is a similar view of a. modified construction of the comb.
lleferring more iarticularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the hollow body of the comb which may be of any suitable shape and which is here shown and is preferably of cylindrical form. @n the lower portion of the sides of the comb are formed an annular series of scalp engaging teeth :2. The upper 'end of the body 1 of the comb is closed by an integrally formed top or upper end 3 in which is formed a centrally disposed tapered Huid discharging passage l which communicates with the bore 5 of a hollow irrigating or liquid distributing tooth 6 which is formed integral with the comb and which projects downwardly in the center of the body 1 to a point within a Specification of Letters Patent.

.short distance from the outer ends of the teeth 2. The outer end of the tooth (3 when thus arranged will be disposed immediately above the scalp when the comb is in use so that the fluid discharged from the tooth will be applied directly7 to the scalp and to the roots of the hair without coming into contact with the latter.
The body 1 is slightly reduced on its upper end to form an annular shoulder 7 above which the reduced portion of the body isthreaded. Onto the threaded outer end of the comb body 1 is screwed a hollow cap 8 which forms a reservoir to contain medicinal liquid or other liuid to be applied to the scalp by the comb. On the shoulder 7 of the body 1 is arranged a gasket or packing ring 9 against which the edge of the cap 8 is engaged when the latter is screwed onto the threaded outer end of the body `1, said gasket forming a 'fluid tight connection between the cap and the comb body.
In the center of the cap S is a centrally disposed threaded aperture 10 with which is engaged the threaded stem of a needle valve 11 the inner or tapered end of which is engaged with the tapered passage l in the top or outer end of the body 1 whereby the aperture in said passage is closed and opened land the flow of the liquid from the cap to the tooth is controlled. On the outer end of the threaded shank of the needle valve 11 is a head 12 by means of which the valve is operated to open and close the passage d. In one side of the cap is a threaded filling opening 13 which is normally closed. by a screw plug lil. The plug 1a is preferably provided with a tapered passage 15 which forms an air vent whereby air may be admitted to the reservoir formed by the cap, thus facilitating the discharge of the liquid therefrom when the valve 11 is open. The vent 15 in the plug 14: is closed when the comb is not in use by a plug or other suitable closure 16.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings is shown a slightly modified construction of the comb wherein the body 17 thereof and the reservoir 18 are formed integral. This form of the comb is provided with scalp engaging teeth 19, an irrigating tooth 20, a fluid contro-lling valve 21 and other parts which are of similar construction and provided for the same purpose as the corresponding parts shown in the first form of the invention, and
a further description of the integral form cf the comb shown in Fig. 4 is not thought to be necessary.
In using the comb the ointment or other medicinal preparation to be applied to the scalp and roots of the hair is placed in the reservoir of the comb and the fluid controlling valve opened to the desired extent to permit the ointment to flow through the irrigating tooth of the comb which is given a rotary or gyrating movement over the scalp and through the hair, thus evenly distributing the ointment over the scalp and applying the same directly to the roots oi the hair.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A comb of the character described comprising a circular body portion having an annular series ot' scalp engaging teeth and a centrally arranged hollow liquid applying and distributing tooth, the lower end ot which terminates immediately above the outer ends of said scalp engaging teeth, whereby said liquid may be applied directly to the roots of the hair, a reservoir on the outer end of said comb body and having therein a iilling opening, a plugV to close said opening, said plug having therein a vent, a plug to close said vent, and a needle valve arranged in said reservoir and adapt* ed to be engaged with said hollow liquid applying tooth whereby the flow of the liquid therethrough is controlled.
A comb of the character described comprising a cylindrical body having on one end an annular series of scalp engaging teeth and having its outer end reduced and threaded to form an annular shoulder, a gasket applied to said shoulder, a hollow tooth formed in the body of the comb and projecting outwardly within said annular series of scalp engaging teeth, said hollow tooth having its outer end terminating a short distance above the outer ends of the scalp engaging teeth and having its bore tapered and extended through the outer end of the comb body, a hollow cap adapted to be screwed onto the threaded reduced end ot' the comb body and into engagement with the gasket thereon, said cap having therein a filling opening, a plug to close said opening, said plug having a vent, a closure for said vent and a needle valve having a threaded engagement with said cap and adapted to be screwed into the tapered extension of the bore of said hollow tooth whereby said bore is opened and closed and the discharge of the liquid Jfrom said hollow cap to said hollow tooth is controlled.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
Criss. S. FRENCH, JOHN E. BARR.
