This invention relates to pumps `and is an improvement over the pumps disclosed in my prior Patents Nos. 1,196,920, granted September 5, 1916, and 1,328,474, granted January 20,1920. 4 i ,is l.

Further objects are to provide a valve which may be simply and cheaply manufactured, which will secure the maximum opening for minimum movement, and which is strong and reliable in construction.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the end of a pump equipped with the valve.

The action of the valve is extremely smooth and effective and produces little wear upon the parts. It is found that when the pressure within the cylinder increases and reaches the pressure within the annular discharge chamber 11, the grip of the cylindrical portion 16 of the valve around the cylinder as well as the pressure of the lll flange `17 of the `valve against the suriace 14 ot the cylinder head is relieved and the valve is free to move rearwardly against the action of the spring 21 and uncover the annular discharge opening 15. As the speed of the piston on its forward or discharge stroke decreases, the spring 21 lorces the valve closer to the surface '14 and at the moment ot reversal of the piston the val-ve is in touch with said surface and the consequent reduction of pressure within the cylinder allows the unbalanced or excess pressure in the cavity 11 to seal the valve against leakage both at the cylindrical portion 16 vand at the flange 17.
Further, it is noted from the described operation given above that although the `pressure in the discharge portion ot' the pump may be very high that, nevertheless, prior to any movement ot the valve along the cylinder, the grip of the valve is loosened by the internal pressure from the cylinder, so that at the instant the valve slides with reference to the projecting portion of the cylinder, it is relatively loose thereon and free from any tight binding or gripping action.
It is apparent from the description that the valve is not called upon to widely eX- pand or alter its shape during discharge, and that therefore an inelastic flexible material may be employed, and a material may be chosen which does not deteriorate when in contact with either oil or high temperature water or other agents which frequently injure the usual type of valves.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be liniited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a pump, the combination of a cylinder, a cylinder head spaced 'from the end of said cylinder and having a smooth tace adjacent such end, a piston positioned within said cylinder, a valve having a cylindrical portion surrounding said cylinder and having a flange adapted to contact with the smooth surface of said cylinder head.
2. In a pump, the combination of a cylinder havinga projecting portion, a piston located in said cylinder, a cylinder head havingl a flat surface in proximity to the end of said cylinder, an inlet valve for said cylinder, and an outlet valve surrounding the projecting portion of said cylinder and adapted to contact with the flat face of said cylinder head.
3. A pump comprising a cylinder, a piston mounted therein, a cylinder head having a flat face adjacent and spaced from the end of the cylinder, said pumpl having an annular discharge cavity surrounding the end of the cylinder, a valve having a cylindrical portion surrounding said cylinder and having a flange adapted to contact with the flat face, a valve guard surrounding said cylindrical part of said valve and having a flange .contacting with the flange of said valve, and a spring urging said valve guard towards said valve.
4. A pump comprising a main body poi'- tion having an annular discharge cavity therein provided with an open outer end, a cylinder liner carried within said bodv portion and projecting into said cavity, a piston mounted within said liner, a cylinder head closing the opening in said cavity and having a flat .tace spaced from the projecting end ot said liner, and a flexible valve having a cylindrical portion mounted upon the projecting portion of said liner, and having an outwardly projecting annular flange adapted to contact with the flat face of said cylinder head.
5. A pump con'iprising a main body portion having an annular discharge cavity therein provided with an open outer end, a cylinder liner carried within said body portion and projecting into said cavity, a piston mounted within said liner, a cylinder head closing the opening in said cavity and having a flat face spaced from the project,- ing end of said liner, a valve guard having a cylindrical portion surrounding the cylindrical portion ot' said valve and having an outwardly projecting flange contacting with the inner face of the ange of said valve, and a spring surrounding said valve guard and pressing the flange of such valve guard against the flange of said valve.
