Description
E. A. EVANS.
Adiustahle Clamps for Rggers. No 153 551. Parentedluzvy 28,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. EVANS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.A
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE CLAMPS FOR RIGGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,551, dated July 2B, 1874; application led May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that L'EDWARD A. EvANs, of Brooklyn, in the county or' Kings and State of New York, have invented an Adjustable Clamp for Riggers, of which the following' is a speciiication My invention relates to a device for the purpose of forming and nippering in. rope around dead-eyes, blocks, thimbles, Src., designed more particularly for use in manipulating wire-rope, although it may be used in connection with rope made from other material.
The invention consists in the combination of a series of adjustable clamping-jaws, arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents a bed-plate of triangular form, on the face of which is a groove, ax, running transversely Aacross it near its base, and a si1ni lar groove, a2, running from the groove ax to the apex of the triangle. These grooves are of dovet-ail or equivalent form, being wider at the bottom than at the top, in order to prevent the vertical displacement of the clamping-jaws, which slide therein. The back jaw B slides in the groove a2, and is operated by a screw, C, working ina seat, b, at the apex of the bed-plate. The side jaws D D slide in the groove ax, and are operated by a screw, E, working in seats ff at the corners of the base ofthe bed-plate, and having a right-hand thread on one half of its length, anda leftha-nd thread on the other half. The'ropeH is placed around the block, thimble, or deadeye G, which is then placed on the bed-plate,
and the jaw B screwed up against it. Then screw E isthen turned so as to move the jaws D D simultaneously toward each other and toward the center, clamping the rope H around the block or dead-eye in the proper form for splicing. After the rope has thus been nippered in, a stopper is put on the rope to hold it while being spliced, and the block, thilnble,4or deadeye is removed from the clamp. After the rope has been spliced and stretched, the block or dead-eye may be again put in the clamp and re-formed or closed at the gap formed at the fork of the splice.
The jaw B may, if desired, be operated by.
a wedge or any other suitable device.
This invention simplifies and facilitates the operation of nipperingin, especially with heavy ropes. It is adjustable to different sizes of ropes, blocks, dead-eyes, Src., and may be used in a vertical or horizontal position. It may be portable or fastened to a block or bench, as desired. Y
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the adjustable back jaw B and the pair of simultaneously-adjustable side jaws D D, operating together substantiallyas shown and described.
