CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 2 7, 1915.
Application filed April 11, 1914. Serial no. 831,201.
of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps, of which the following is a specification. 0
The object of this invention is to prov de a clamp which is adapted for use in'making square and miter joints. 7
The invention has to do more partlcularly with an ordinary clamp such as is commonly employed by carpenters for drawlng two faces together to form a close and even joint, said clampbeing provided with movably mounted jaws which are adapted to engage the parts of a miter joint uniformly and evenly together and hold them 1n that position until permanently vfastened. The jaws also are so arranged that they can be moved back out of the way leaving the ordinary jaws of the clamp free for ordinary use.
Further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description,
and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing the parts of a miter joint secured by the clamp; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a detail illustrating one end of one of the aws with its auxiliary jaw in substantially the same position as illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is another side elevation of a detail illustrating one end of one of the jaws, part of said jaw being broKen away and in section for the'purpose of more clearly illustrating the construction of the invention; Fig. 4: is a'section of a detail taken on the line XX of Fig. 1,v
and Figs 5 and 6 are perspective views of parts of my improvement.
In the drawing, A and B indicate two oppositely disposed jaw members of an ordinary carpenters clamp which are adapted to be adjusted by means of the screws 2 and 3 in the ordinary manner. This clamp is adapted for use in securing the two members together in parallel position in the usual manner. These main jaw members are not adapted for direct use in securing two faces at an obtuse angle together and for more eiiiciently accomplishing this result, I provide a pair of similarly constructed auxiliary jaws G and D, each of which is mounted in one of the main jaw members A and B. Each auxiliary jaw consists of a metal face plate 4 having a supporting rib 5 centrally and longitudinally disposed on one side, said rib being adapted to be seated 1n a slot. 6 in the main jaw. The lateral face of theplate 4 opposite the side from which the rib projects is provided with inwardly facing teeth 7 trending inwardly and downwardly when the plates engage two members of a miter joint such as G and H illustrated in Fig. 1. IThe rib on the auxiliary jaw member is formed with a lon gltudinal 'slot 8. 'The main jaw members are provided with pintle members E and F which are similar, one pintlebeing seated on each main jaw. Each pintle is formed with a yoke 9 integral with two face plates 10-10, said yoke passing through said longitudinal slot 8 in the rib of an auxiliary aw and across the slot 6 in a main jaw and acting as a pivot on which the auxiliary jaw is free to slide and hinge. The face plates l010 are secured across the inner face of" the upper end of the main jaw as illustrated such as by screws 11. These face plates 1010 serve to reinforce and protect the upper ends of the main jaws from wear when the jaws are in ordinary use. The pintle member permits the auxiliary jaw, to turn freely either into position for use in securing the members of a miter joint together, or to swing back out of the way and against the slanting outer faces 12 on the upper ends of the main jaws as illustrated in Fig. 3. The upper end of the slot 8 in each rib 5 is offset to form a pocket 13 which isadapted to receive the yoke 9 and its shoulders to prevent the auxiliary jaw sliding when in extended position. When in extended position the auxiliaryjaw is free to swingon its pintle which rests in said pocket whereby both auxiliary jaws are adapted to adjust themselves so that their inwardly and downwardly slanting teeth will bite into the material of the members G and H and hold said members closely joined together. The inner side of the slot 8 toward the face plate 4: is at a slight angle inwardly toward the lower end of the inner wall of said face plate, so that a binding engagement is produced between the inner face of said face plate and the inclined surface 12 of the main jaw when the auxiliary jaw is swung up and slid down upon the face 12. This binding engagement as illustrated in Fig. 3 holds the auxiliary plate with its ribs receded into the main jaw and its face entirely out of V nary use.
the way leaving the main jaw free for ordiclamp for securing themembers of a miter joint together the auxiliary jaws are moved. outwardly and slid inwardly with their pockets l3'holdingthe pintle yokes-9.. The
i members G and H are then inserted between 7 embodiment" thereof, bjut I desire to have Vsis'ting; of a plate, having'a series. of in- I the face plates of the auxiliary'jaws and the screws-2 and 3 tightened, thuscausing, the
, teeth 7 "toengage the material of the mem' V ber'sG and H and clamp said members with;
forming a close'joint have described the' principles of operation of myinvention, together with the apparatus.
which-InoW consider to represent the best itj understo'iod' that'the construction shown is only illustrative, andjthat' the-invention.
can be carried out 'byv other means and ape plied'to uses other than those above set forth:
Within'the scope of the following. claims;
Having described my invention; what, claim as new and desire to' protect. byQLet- I ters Patent is 1 for adjusting said jaws apart, an auXiliary jaw carried'j by each" of said nlai v jaws, con- Wardly and downwardly trending} teeth carried by-its face and a crib on; the back of said plate, said rib beingformedwith a slot. trending at an angle to the adjacent face of Said'plate and terminating at one end in an offset pocket, said rib; being movably; seated in the slot infone of said main jaws andl 'a pintlfe passing across the I space between the sides" of the 'slotgi'n each main jaw. and
through the slotjin' the rib of an auxiliary jaw and adapted to form a; pivot forfthe adapted to permit s'aid' auxiliaryjjaw swinging back, over theupperendof. the main jaw and the trending ofjsaid slot: causing. said plate to bind with one',of its faces. binding.
against the back of the main jaw.
When it is desired to use the,
clamp, comprising, combination, Pai f. am Jaws fh i ng'. s. 1n subs tial alinementj acrossthe r' outer end's,.means auxiliary jaw,- said pintle member being 2;A clamp, comprising, in combination, a pair'of main clamping jaws, means for adjusting. said jaws apart and an auxiliary jaw pivoted upon each of said main jaws having a toothed work engaging surface adapted to lie at an obtuse angle to the working surface of the opposite main jaw and a. slotted. member co-acting with said pivot connection, permitting said auxiliary jaw swinging and sliding hack free of the working surface of themain jaw on which it ismounted. r
3.1 clamp, comprising, in combination, a pair. of main clamping jaws having bifurcated, upper ends, means for adjusting said jaws apart and an. auxiliary jaw slidably engaged within the bifurcated: end of each of. said main jaws having a work e11- gaging surface adapted to lie at an obtuse angle; to the working surface of the opposite' main jaw or to slide back free of the working, surface of the main jaw onwhich it,i s.mount'ed,
4;, clamp comprising a pair of main clamping, jaws having slots tlierethrough, means 011; adjusting said jaws apart, and an auxiliary jaw slidably engaged] within the slots of each of. said main jaws adapted to adjust itself to and bear against the adjacent face of a miter joint and to be slid back free of the working surfaces of said main jaws.
5. A clamp comprising a pair of main clamping jaws having bifurcated upper ends, a. pivot pin. extending through each of said bi furcated. ends, means for adjusting said jaws apartand an. auxiliary jaw slidablyengaged by said pivot pin within the bifurcatedend of each of saidmain jaws adapted to operatively engage the adjacent face of'work lying at anangle to the working faces of said main jaws.
In testimony wherof, I have signed my nameto this specification, in thepresence-of two subscribing witnesses.
