To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, YVADE H. lrlannitson, a citizen of the United fitates, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Hanger-Supporting Mechanism for W'ardrobe Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has general reference to wardrobe trunks and relates more specifically to a garment hanger supporting mechanism therefor and particularly that type of wardrobe trunk known as the hingedly joined, double section type, the primary object of the invention residing in the provision of such a supporting mechanism wherein the garment hanger supporting bar per se'is so mounted as to be swung within or without the trunk for allowing the clothes to be properly positioned therein or to be extended outwardly from the interior of the trunk when it is desired to use the same.

An additional object of the present invention is to provide such a support ng mechanism wherein the same may be removed as a unit from the trunk and associated with a specific form of bracket element that is to be positioned within a closet whereby the articles of wearing apparel may be readily supported within the closet when the traveler reaches his destination.

An additional object of the present invention resides in the provision of certain means whereby the hanger supporting bar per so, may be swung downwardly at an inclination to its carrying means when the mechanism is positioned within a closet, said bar carrying a series of spaced hooks upon its under-side upon-which the clothes hangers are to be engaged, it being obvious from this construction that the garments will be supported in stepped relation so as not to take up too great amount of the space within the closet.

lVith the above and other objecs in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and claimed.

Figure 5 is a front elevational view of the garment hanger supporting means removed from the trunk and associated with a par tieular type of support that is to be rigidly secured within a closet.

Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 designates generally, one of the sections of a well known type of wardrobe trunk with which my improved garment hanger supporting mechanism is to be associated.

My invent-ion per se embodies the provision of a relatively long plate 6 that is to be rigidly secured to the interior of the trunk section 5 and this upon the side wall thereof opposite from the side wall that is hingedly connected to the other trunk section not shown. Said plate 6 is flanged upon its opposite edges as at 7 whereby said plate may be rigidly secured through the medium of bolts on other fastening means to the wall of the trunk. "he inner face of this plate 6 longitudiually channeled at 8 for the sliding reception of a bolt 9 of relatively greater length than said plate 6. The inner end of this bolt 9 is formed with an abutment 10 for limiting the outward sliding movement vof the bolt within the slot of the plate 6. The outer end of this bolt is formed with a head 11 that is termed with a vertically arranged opening 12, Fig ure 1.

The position of the plate 6 within the trunk is such as to permit the head 11 of the bolt 9 to position directly at the open side of the trunk section when said bolt is forced to its inward limit of movement.

Disposed lor swinging nmvement upon the head 12 is a relatirely wide arm 1. that is formed at its end adjacent said head with a head 14- in which is a, vertical opening 15 for registration with the opening in the head 11 of said bolt 9 whereby a pivot pin 16 may be extended therethrough so as to term the pivotal connection between the arm and the head 11.

From a consideration ot Figure 1 it will he noted that the position of the arm supporting means is such as to allow but the necessary room between said supporting elements and the top all oi the trunk section whereby as long as the bolt 9 is maintained in its inward limit of movement, it will be imp ssible to remove said arm from the means to which it is hingedly attached.

For maintaining the bolt 9 in its inward slid position for thereby preventing the detachment of said arm, said bolt is provided adjacent its headed end with an opening 17, Figure 4, that registers with an opening in the plate 6, through which may be engaged a pin 18. This pin 18 is carried by the trout end of a spring strip 19 that is rigidly secured at its rear end to the plate 6 it being ot course ol ions that when said pin is positioned in the manner as shown in lfiignres 2 and it it will be impossible to slide the bolt 5) in a 'torward direction. The garment hangers, not shown, are to be supported upon the bar section 28 when the device is extended within the trunlt, it being nevertheless understood that when the arm 13 is moved outwardly away from the trunk section the bar 29 may be swung to a direction parallel with the bar 28 for allowing the garment hangers to be positioned thereon for obviously allowing the different articles of wearing apparel to be spaced apart so that the same may be readily viewed when it is desired to select certain articles. 1t is preferable that a desirable term of latch means 31 be provided between the free end of the arm 13 and the adjacent side wall of the trunk section for obviously preventing an outward swinging movement: of the arm until such a movement is desired.

For allowing the garment hanger supporting bar carrying arm 13 to be properly supported within the closet, I employ in connection therewith, a suitable plate 33 that is to be rigidly secured to one of the walls of the closet or the inner side of the door thereof, said plate carrying upon its back side metal straps 34: that: have their upper ends extended 'torwardly of the plate tor providing lingers whereby the arm 13 may be hooked thereover in a manner as clearly shown in Figure 5.

For preventing a sliding movement. of the sectional bar 27 upon the pin 24 of the bracket 23 while the same is resting upon the horizontal wall portion 25 thereof, a suitable form of latch finger 35 is provided, the construction of which is also clearly shown in Figure 5.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel and useful form of garment hanger supporting mechanism, for wardrobe trunks and one wherein the entire number of garments within the trunk may be removed when desired, and wherein the supporting mechanism for the garment hangers may be swung outwardly of the trunk for permitting ready access to the same.

I do not wish to be limited to the specific structure shown in the drawing and tie scribed in the specification, as in the future practice of the invention minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A garment hanger including a plate provided with a channel, a bolt slidably mounted in the channel of the plate and having an angularly disposed extremity which is normally spaced from the end of the plate to limit the sliding movement of the bolt in relation to the plate, a frame pivoted upon the belt, a bracket mounted upon the frame at a point between the ends thereof and having an inclined wall section and a horizontally disposed wall section, a bar section pivotally mounted upon the bracket and removable over and engageable on the horizontal and inclined wall sections thereof so that the bar section may be supported in either an inclined position or a horizontally disposed position, and a second bar section pivotally connected with the first bar section and arranged horizontally with relation thereto.

A garment hanger including a bracket having an inclined wall section and a horizontally disposed wall section, and a bar sec tion pivotally mounted on the bracket and movable over and engageable on the horizontal and inclined wall sections thereof whereby the bar section may be supported in either an inclined position or a horizontal position.
