Be it known that I, BURNHAM C. S'rioio Nor, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and a State of New Jersey, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Typewrit-- 511g Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to noise-deadening 1o casings or hoods for typewriting machines, and is of the same general type disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 429,617, filed December 10, 1920. The invention comprises, in combination with'a Ia typewriting machine, a. sound-deadening casing or hood for enclosing the noise-producing parts of the machine, while the keys and other parts of the machine used in its operation project from the casing or hood.
It is one feature of this invention to provide a die-cast hood which can be easily and cheaply produced.
Another feature of this invention is the construction of the hood in several parts, so that it may be knocked down or dis assembled to enable the parts to be packed within a minimum of space for convenience in shippin and which permits rapid and easy Tet-assembling. F or this purpose, the an hood comprises a cover part and a body part, tl'1e former being readily detachable from the latter, and the bodypart comprises, front,back and side members which are releasably connected to permit the disassembling of the body part. The cover and the various parts-of the body are separate die-castings and so formed that, when assembled, the hood presents a smooth, neatappearance. The cover is further provided with a transparent plate for permitting the machine within the casing to be viewed, and said plate is also releasably mounted to permit its withdrawal for separatepacking, or for replacement.

The Underwood standard typewriting machine comprises a main frame and an extension 11 of said frame, within which extension are positioned the usual banks of type-keys 9, the machine standing on feet 14, which are usually of rubber. The machine carries a letter-feed carriage 12, supported on a front rail (not shown) and a rear rail 13 on. the main frame, and is proided with a line-space handle 15, which projects forwardly and isbent downwardly for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
For enclosing the machine to deaden the sound produced in typewriting, there is provided a sound-deadening casing or hood which comprises, in general, a lower body part and an upper cover part 21, the body part comprising a front plate 22, end members 23, and a rearplate 24;, all of which are separate die-cast pieces. The end members 23 are provided with rear flanges 25, to the inside surfaces of which is fas- ,tened, preferably by screws 27, the back plate 24; by means of inwardly-extendinnmembers 26 (see Figures 1 and'3). By this arrangement, the outer surface of the back plate 24 is flush with the outer surfaces of flanges 25, and thus forms a smooth exterior without projections. The end members 23 are provided with horizontal extensions 30, over which the carriagetravels to the right and left, said extensions projecting laterally to either side beyond the limits of travel of the carriage. A rear wall 31 of the cover 21 is hingedly connected to-the back plate 2 1 by means of lugs 32 having perforations at their ends forming bearings, the lugs on the cover engaging between perforated lugs 33 on the back plate 24, the perforations of both sets of hugs forming: one long, continuous bearing for a releasable bolt 35, which. may be headed at one end and "pro vided with a nut (not shown) at the other end after it is passed through the lugs 32 and S3 to hold the cover to the body part. The heights of front plate 22 and front wall 50 of thecover, are such that, when the cover 1s closed, a longitudinal slot is formed at the front through which various operating members, such as the line-space :handle 15,;project,-for which purpose the line-space handle isextended forwardly and bent downwardly, as previously described. It is necessary to close this slot to prevent sound from passing therethrough, and for this purpose there are provided cushion strips 51 and 52, which may be formed of loops or folds. of suitable material such as plush, felt, or soft leather, the two-ply margins of the cushion strips :beingfined to the inner surfaces,"adjacent the co-op crating "edges, of front plate. 22 and the front all of the cover.
The extensions 30 of the end members 23 terminate at the sides in horizontal ledges 55, forming supports upon which rest horizontal flanges 56' at the sides of the cover.

A finger-piece 61 is provided at the lefthand end of the cover, by which the latter inn y be swung up to open the hood. In lmojcking down, or, in other-words, disassembling the device for shipping purposes, the cover part may be detached from the body part by withdrawing bolt 85; by removing flange 43, transparent plate 40 may be withdrawn and separately packed; and the body part may be disassembled'by withdrawing bolts 16 to release the front plate 22, and unscrewing back plate 20 from the end members 23. A knock-down sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a base and a cover therefor, said base comprising at each side a east side member having an upright wall provided with stiffening ribs integral therewith, a floor extending out wardly from the upper edge'of said wall to accommodate the carriage in its traveling movements, and a flange projecting from said side member and extending along the front and rear edges of said upright wall and. around the edges of said floor, and a rear wall shaped to engage the-portion of the flange at the rear of the side member and form with the side member a smooth joint.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a base and a cover therefor, said base comprising at each side a side member having a side Wall extending upwardly adjacent the side of the machine, a floor extending outwardly from the upper edge of said wall to form with the cover and extension to accommodate the travel of the typewriter-carriage, flanges extending at right angles from said side wall and said floor at the front and rear edges thereof and at the side edge of said floor, and a flange extending inwardly from the top of the flange at the side edge of said floor toprovide a ledge to support the adjacent side of the cover, and a rear wall having lateral projections near its upper edge, the vertical and horizontal flanges on each side member being secured to the adjacent edges of the rear wall and to the lateral projections of the rear wall, respectively. 7
9 A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a base and a cover therefor, said base comprising at each side a side member having a side wall extending upwardly adjacent the side of the machine, a floor extending outwardly from the upper edge of said wall to form with the cover an extension to accommodate the travel of the typewriter-carriage, flanges extending at right angles from said side wall and said floor at the rear edges thereof and a cover-s1lpporting ledge at the outer edge of saidzfioor, and a rear wall having lateral projections near its upper edge, the vertical and horizontal flanges oneach side member beingsecured to the adjacent edges of the rear wall and to the lateral proj ections of the rear wall, respectively, the flanges and the adjacent edges of the rear wall being so formed that, when assembled, smooth joints will be obtained on: the outer surface of the casing. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a base and a cover therefor, said base comprising inverted L-shaped end walls having flanges at the rear edges thereof an'd a die-cast :rear'wall having recesses on the rear face thereof to receive the ilanges at the rear edges of said end walls, the rear face of said flanges being .finsh with therearface of said rear wall, said rear wall havingat its upper edge hinge members integral therewith, said cover having hinge members to oo-operate with the hinge members on said'rear wall and compaerating with i the npwardly-projeating1 p01 1 tions of the fiangesofsaid end walls to close the upper portion of the casing :in which the typewriter-carriage travels.

A sonnd-deadenlngcasmg for :a typewriting machine, comprising a base and .a cover therefor, said base comprising inverted 'L-shaped end walls havlng flanges: at the rear edges thereof and a die-cast rear wall having recesses in its real-face at the edges thereof to receive the flanges at the rear edges of said end wallsfinsh with the rear face of said rear wall, said rear wall having provisions for engaging the back, of the frame ofthe machine for positioning the same and ihavlng at :1ts upper edge lhmge nig for a typewriting machine, CODIPUSUlg members integral therewith. said cover having hinge members to co-operate with the hinge members on said rear walliand co-pcrating with the upwardly-projecting por tionsof the flanges ofsaidend walls to close the upper portion of the casing in which' the typewriter-carri age travels.

A sound-deadening casingfor a typewritingumachine, having overhanging side portions to accommodate the travel of the 'typewriter-earnage, said casing comprising front, rear-and side Walls, said front wall having an opening to permit the' insertion of the machine and beingprovidednat each side of the opening with a pair of spaced lugs arranged vertically and having aligned openings therennand a die-cast cover plate for said front wall to extend across-said opening andhaving at each side a rearward ly-extending lug to be inserted between the corresponding pair of lugs on the front wall of the'casingand provided with an opening to be brought into alignment with the openings of these" lugs to permit a bolt to be passed therethrongh to secure the (rower-plate in POSltlOllyQZlUll of said lugs on the enterplate being providcdwith a own-surface to forming parts of said overhanging side portions, :21 back secured :to said side members i in :suchamanner that a suitable tool mustbc used in'attachmg ordetaching the same, said casing havmgan open front to permit the insertion of the machine which, when in position, has its keyboard projecting throngh said opening, a front to close said opening ya-bove andeat the sides of said keyboard, and

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a base and a cover" therefor, said base comprising at each side aside member having a side wall ex tending upwardly adjacent the side of the machine, aiioor extending outwardlyfrom the upper edge ofsaid wall to form with the cover an extension to accommodate the travel -ofthe typewritei carriage, and flanges ex tendingat right anglesfrom said side wall and said floor at the rear edges thereof, and a rear wall having lateral projections near its upper edge,thevertical andhorizontal flanges oneach side member being secured to the adjacent side edges of the rear wall andto the lateral projections of the rear wall, respectively, by fastening means operable only from the inside of said casingand inaccessible when the machine is in the easing. l
15- In a knock-down sound-deadening casav-body part and a cover; an integral side right portion, an outwardly-extending floor to form with the cover a chamber to accom' modate the travelof thecarriage and a continuous flange projecting inwardly and extending npwardly along the front edge of said upright portion, around the free edges ofsaid floor, and down the rear edge of the upright portion, the flange, at the outer end of the floor, being bent over to form a coversupporting ledge.

In a knock-down sollnd-demlening cas ing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body part and a cover; an integral side .wall for the body part, con'lprising an up right portion, an ontwardly-extending floor to form with the cover a chamber to accrue modate the travel of the carriage, a continu ous flange projecting inwardly and extending upwardly along the front edge of said upright portion, around the free edges of said floor, and down the rear edge of the upright portion, the'fiange, at theouter end of the floor, being bent over to form a coversupporting ledge, and re-enforcing ribs extending vertically on said upright portion and outwardly along said floor.

In a knock-clown sound-deadening easing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body-part and a cover; an integral side Wall for the hodypart, comprising an upright portion, an outwardly-extending floor to form with the cover a chamber to accoinmodate the travel of the carriage, a continu ous flange projecting inwardly and extending upwardly along the front edge of said upright portion, around the free edges of said floor, and down the rear edge of the up right portion, the flange, at the outer end of the floor, being bent over to form a coversupporting ledge, and lugs on the flange at the front of the upright portion, and hav ing aligned openings for connecting the side Wall With the front Wall of the casing.
18. In a knock-down sound-deadening casing, a back Wall having lateral extensions near its upper edge and offset portions along its sides and the lower edges of the extensions, to form depressions to receive flanges on the side Walls of the casing.
