Be it known that I, Gnonon F. A. Oons a citizen of the United States of America. residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and -titate of New Jersey, ha e invented new and useful Improvements in Track Tools of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the invention generally is to provide a tool tor use in connection with the extraction and insertion of spikes tor the attachment of the rails to the ties, and particularly as a means for inserting and extracting such spikes or holding elements as are disclosed in connection with the rail tie and fasteningv means of Patent No. 1,489,960, dated April 8, 1994.
A further purpose is to provide a construction adapted tor raising the tie into contact with the rail base or depressing the latter into contact with the tie for the eitec tive holding of the two in engagement dnring the spike inserting operation; to provide spike inserting and withdrawing elements actuable independently; and to provide a construction of simple character and yet stable form so that it may be cheaply manufactured and yet etl'ectively withstand the rough usage to which, in practice it will be subjected.
With these purposes in view, the inven tion consists in a construction and combina tion 01 parts of which a preferred embodi ment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein i Figure 1 is an elevational view partly in section showing the invention applied in operative position for the extraction or insertion of a spike.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the structure of Figure 1, the tie being shown in section.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a vertical sectional view on the plane indicated by the line l-& of Figure 1.
The body 1, which is recessed on the lower end as indicated at 2 to provide a seat in which the ball or head 3 of the rail 4 may engage, is bored axially from the upper end and interiorly threaded to constitute a socket for the reception of the screw 5, the latter having a. swivel mounting between the fixed collars 6 in a cross-head 7 and the screw being actuable'by means of a cross handle 8.

The cross-head supports the tie stirrups 9 which consist of downwardly divergent arms 10 terminally formed with inwardly facing hooks 11 for engagement with the under or bottom face of the tie 12. That the stirrups may be engaged with the tie, the arms of each stirrup are swingingly connected to the cross-head by means ot studs 15 on the extremities of the latter engaging eyes in the stirrups at the connecting ends of the arms.
It is obvious from the construction just described that the rail base 16 and the tie 152 may be held lirmly in engagement after the connection ot the stirrup's with the latter and the actuation of the screw by the handle 6 to move the body 1 into firm engagement with the ball 3 of the rail.
The means for extracting and inserting the spikes 1T consist of independently operable elements of which one is disposed oir each side of the body 1. The body 1 may be either a casting or forging and is formed on opposite sides with the brackets 18 having horizontal and vertical recess in which are disposed respectively the gears 19 and pinions 20. The gears 19 are provided with appropriate thrust bearings consisting of balls 21 disposed respectively above and below the gears, the balls traversing raceways formed in the upper and lower faces of the recesses, the upper raceway being accessible through openings 22 closed byren'iovablo screw plugs 23. The eyes of the gears 19 are threaded for the reception of the threaded shanks 2d of the spike pulling and inserting element. the spike claws 25 having a swivel connection 26 with the shanks and being provided with hinge elements 2? to permit the claws being swung away from and to ward the spike, which movement, of course, is necessary in the initial engagement of a claw with a spike.
To elevate and lower the spike pulling and inserting elements, the pinions :20 are carried on stub shafts 28 jonrnaled in the brackets 18 and exterior to the brackets are provided with the ratchet disk 29, the tectl of which are engageable with the pawls 3O pivotally mounted on studs 31 carried by the operating handle 32, the head 33 ot the handle being engageable with the projecting extremity of the. stub shaft for pivotal or swinging movement with reference to the latter. Thus the oscillation of the handle will, through the pawl 30. cause intermittent rotary movement in one direction to the stub shaft 28 and thereby eflect rotation 01 the gear 19 with the consequent elevation or depression of'the spike pulling or inserting element. The pawl 30, it will be noted, is reversible and depending on its position will depend whether such rotary movement communicated to the gear l9 is such asto elevate or depress the spike pulling or inserting element.
T he head 83 may be disengaged fronr the stub shaft 28 merely by lateraln'ioveinent in the direction of? the stub shaft. Thus, it is readily attachable to either stubsha'it and when in abutting engagement with the ratchet disk the pawl is in position for en gagement with the teeth of the ratchet disk.
The ini'ention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is: i
1. A tool for the purpose indicated comprising a: body element recessed at its lower end to provide a seat for the ball of a rail, a screw threadingly engaged with thebody elen'ient at the end remote from the seat. a cross-headrotatably supported by the screw, and stirrups carried at the extremities of the cross-head and consisting of downwardly divergent arms formed with inwardly directed hooks for engagement with the bottom of a tie.

A tool for the purpose indicated comprising a body element for engagement with the ball oi a rail, stirrups connected with the body element and adapted forengage ment with a tie, the body element being provided with a bracket a gear couple carried by said bracket, a spike inserting and extracting element comprising a threaded shank engaged wlth the eye o'lt one of the units of said gearcou- 'ile and an actnatii'ig handle operatlvely connected wlth the other of the units of said gear couple.
