VICTOR'E. LINCDFOBS, GF'BUTTE, MGNTANA.
CUE-Trie sentirne.
Application filed April 18, 1921. Serial No. 462,305.
To all 'u1/10m 'it may concern.'
Be it known that l, Vieron E. LiNnrons, a citizen of the United States, residingat Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and .State of@ lvlontana, haveinvented new and useful Cue-Tip Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device especially designed for use in smoothing billiard cu`e.tips,it'bcing the primary. object.A of the .invention to provide a devicev of this charac.- ter which maybe readily positioned over a cue tip and rotatedv to accomplish the smoothing result.
A further object of the invention isVV the provision of a body portion provided with an' opening to accommodatel` the cue,` the opening being of a diameter'to prevent lateral movement of the device, to insure a true smoothing of the tip.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a removable blade whichmay be readily and easily removedfrom the body portion for sharpening or replacement.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com* bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1Y is a side elevational view of a smoothing device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an elevational view partly in section of the smoothing device, one of the side members being removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure flis an elevational view of a modified form of the device showing one of the side members of the body portion removed.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line of Figure 4f.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the body portion of the device includes opposed sections 5 and 6 respectively, each section being formed preferably of metal curved transversely of its length, so that when the sections are brought together', a tubular ing screws S-whereby the sections ofthe body and the member 9 may be secured together.
' This member 9 is formed with curved cut out` portions especially designed to receive the usual curved cue tip. Formed integral with thel walls of the cutout portions are ribs11 and-12, which ribs are designed to engage the soft fibrous surface cfa cue tip oneA of said ribs having an edge to remove the protruding fibers of the tip and render the tip exceptionally smooth and regular.
As shown, the rib 12 is formed with a sharp cutting surface 13 formed intermediate its ends to insure an exceptionally smooth portion at the extremity of the tip under operation.
The cut out portion at one side of `the member 9 is deeper than the cut out portion at the opposite side thereof, adapting the device for use `in connection with cue tips of different sizes.
The blade supporting element 9 includes a body portion having cut out portions formed therein the cut out portions having curved walls conforming to the curvature of a cue tip. Formed integral with the curved walls are curved blades 11 and 12 respectively the blades 11 having their inner ends disposed in spaced relation while the blades 12, which are disposed at right angles to the blades 11 are positioned therebetween.
The blades 12, are provided with cut out portions 13 providing a knife-like cutting` edge to contact with the extreme outer end of the cue tip and recess the same.
As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, the cut out portion at one side of the blade suijiporting member 9 is relatively deep as compared with the cut out portion at the opposite side thereof, thereby providing a device for smoothing cue tips of various shapes.
In the modified form of the invention as illustrated by Figures t and 5 of the drawing, a member is yprovided which has its ends 14C disposed between the sections of the body 7, the member 15 being formed with curved portions conforming to the curvature of a cue tip, the edges of the member 15 adjacent to the curved portions being relatively sharp to scrape the cue tip engaged thereby.
In the use of the device, the body portion is positioned over the end of a cue until the cue tip engages the smoothing member disposed between the sections of the body portion, whereupon the body portion is slightly rotated, causing the sharp edges of the member supported by the body portion to scrape and remove the usual fibers protruding beyond the surface of a cue tip.
In the use of the device, the body portion being of a shape to receive anV end of a billiard cue, the device is positioned over the cue untilthe blade contacts with Jche tip thereof. INhen the body portion is in a position as described, the body portion is slightly rotated on the tip, with the result that Jthe. knife edges thereof smooth ythe cue tip and give the same its proper shape.
I'Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described,
an elongated tubular body portion compristions,
ing longitudinal separable sections, each of the sections having flanges formed with openings, the flanges adapted to be brought into engagement With each other, to accommodate bolts extending through the openings, a member having cutting edges formed on opposite sides thereof, said member having lateral extensions disposed between the flanges of the body portion to removably secure the member Within the body portion, and said body portion adapted to be positioned over the end of a cue to trim the tip thereof.
2. Ina device of the character described, an elongated tubular body portion comprising detachably 'connected longitudinal seca circular member of a diameter equal to the diameter of the interior of the body portion to closely iit therein, said member having extensions disposedl between the flanges of the body portion, a blade carried by the member, and means extending through the flanges and extensions to hold the member intermediate the ends of the body portion, and said body portion adapted to be positioned over the end of' a eue tip to trim the tip.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tivo Witnesses.
VICTOR E. LINDFORS.
