To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO J. WAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county-of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clippers, of which ,the following is a full, clear, concise, and
comprising the armature rearwardly at one side of the case or casing of the clipper and to so -mount the same that the vibratory movement thereof takes place about a center near the one side of the casing. 'I'he mounting is preferably made by means of a resilient member such as a blade spring, although any other suitable m'eans for obtaining a. -vibratory action can be used.
When the vibrator-y means carrying the blade is mounted in this manner, the tendency will be for the blade to move back from the cutting edge more at one end of its movement than at the other end. This is due to the fact that the blade travels in the arc of circle whose center is the point of securement or mount-f ing of the vibratory member on the casing. It is a purpose of my invention to overcome this condition and to obtain substantially the same receding of the teeth of the movable of the stationary blade on both ends of its movement, thus considerably reducing the amount which the blade recedes as a maximum and -providing a device that has a much better cutting action. This result is obtained by mounting the resilient member forming apart of the vibratorymechanism either on or near the center line of the device. Y Y

near the side of the casing because the electro-magnet extends transversely of the casing and as it is desirable to make the devices of this character as small in width 'as possible s that the same will fit the hand readily, the eleetrofmagnet occupies substantially the entiretwidth ofthe casing except the space that is necessary for the vibratory -movementof the vibratory member between the electro-magnet and the wall of the casing.
The result desired may be obtained in various ways, as for example by offsetting either the armature or the resilient member forming part of the vibratory member so -same will lie at or near the center line of the device, or by gradually inclining 'the vibratoiy member inwardly so that the secured end thereof would lie near the center line of the blades when in central position.
Other objects and advantages ofmy invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings, proceeds. However, I desire to have it distinctl understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details sh'own or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and rmodifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claims.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
- I provide a suit-able case 4 having a cover 5 attached to the case as by means of a screw 6 which passes through the cover and intothe pedestal 7, and I mount within the casing so formed a coil 8 having, acore 9, which is held in place in the case as by screws 10, the
coil 8 being provided with suitable leads 13 for the supplyin of the operating current which is pre-fera ly that known as an alternating current.
The stationary clipper blade 30 in mounted at one end of the .case and preferably at an angle as shown in Fig. 2 and the movable clipper blade 11 is mounted above the stationary clipper blade and slides thereon, both of these blades being preferably serrated as shown at 12.
At the rear of the case 4, or opposite that end which rcarries the stationary clipperA blade 30, a mounting 14 is provided for a blade spring 15, the `connection being by means of a screw 16. The-blade spring 15 carries an armature 17 which is of the shape shown in Fig. 1 and extends forwardly and is bent transversely to carry the guard 18 and bracket 19, the parts being connected together as by screws 20. The bracket 19 carries a; driving and adjusting screw 21 to move the blade 11 and to hold it to its seat, while the guard 18, by its contact with the rib 22 of the blade 11, prevents this blade from turning on the lower end of 21 as on` a pivot.
It is to be noted that the mounting 14 for the sp-ring 15 brings thecenter of movement of the movable blade 11 practically into the center of the len h of the' blade so that the movement of t is blade is harmonious, on either side of its central point.
To adjust the tension of the spring 15, I
'providea screw 23 which passes through the side wall of the case and is threaded through a pedestal 24, the end of the screw coming in contact with the spring 15.
l In theconstruction shown in Fig. 3 the spring 15 is replaced by spring 25 and the armature 17 is replaced by the armature 26 which brings the joint between these two parts some distance further from the mounting 14 than in the construction shown in Fig. 1 though without materially modifying the action of the parts even though increasing the length of elasticity of the spring. It is, of. course, to be understood that the members 25 and 26 bear substantially the same relation to the blades 11 and 30 as the members 15 and 17 as shown in Fi 1.
In Fig. 4 is shown a slightly ifferent obnst-ruction of the vibratory member, in said. figure the casing 4 has the electro-magnet comprising the coil 8 and armature 9 mounted therein by means of the screws 10, these parts being the same as shown in Fig. 1. The clipper blade construction and mounting at the forward end of the device is preferably the same as in Fig. 1 and is not shown in detail. The vibratory member comprisingthe resilient member 15 and the armature 17 corresponding to the members 15 and 17 in Fig. 1 is provided with a transversely -extending portion 27 upon which the movable clipper blade is mounted in a similar manner to that shown in Fig. 1 and 2. The resilient member 15 is secured to the lug or abutment 14 by means of the securing member 16 which is the same as that shown in Fig. 1. The vibratory member-is adjusted in a similar manner to that in which the vibratory member in Fig. 1 is adjusted by means of the screw 23 passing through the pedestal 24 and having screw threaded engagement therewith.
It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 4 Cthat the members 15 and 17 overlap and are .secured together by means of suitable lsecuring devices 29. It will be further noted that the member 15 and the member 17 are substantially straight and lie substantially in parallel planes instead of being offset as are the members 15 and 25 in Figs. 1 Vand 3. However, the angularity of the member 17 relative to the center line 28 of the device is such that the end 31 thereof, which isV device although the end thereof adjacent the transversely extending portion 27 is as near the sidewall of the lcasing as the same can be placed to permit the necessary vibration of the vibratory member.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. In a clipper the combination of a case, a stationary clipper blade carried thereby, a movable clipper blade cooperating. with the stationary blade, an alternating current electro-magnet in the case, an armature for the electro-magnet and located near one side of the case and for moving the movable clipper blade, driving and pressure-connections between the armature and the movable clipper blade, and a mounting for the armature located on a line near the center of the clipper blade. i
2. In a clipper the combination of a case, a stationary blade carried thereby, a movable blade` cooperating with the stationary blade, an alternating current electro-magnet in the case and near that end thereof which carries the blades, an armature arranged near one side of the case and connected lto move the movable blade, and a spring for carrying the `armature and mounted in the case near the end op osite to that which carries the blades, sai spring being mounted near thecenter of the case.
3. In a clipper the combination of a case, a stationary blade vcarried thereby, a movable blade cooperating with the stationary blade,
an alternating current electro-magnet in the one -side of the case and connected to move the movable blade, and a spring for carrying the armature and mounted in the case near the end opposite to that which carries the blades, said spring being mounted near the center of the case, and means for adjusting the tension of the spring.
4. In a device of the character described, a casing, an electro-magnet extending transversely of said casing from near one side thereof to near the other side thereof and a vibratory member in said casing having a blade mounted on one end thereof and mounted on said casing' near the other end thereof, said member lying between the end of said magnet and one side of said casing and having a portion lying nearer the center line of said casing rearwardly of said magnet.
5. In a device of the character described,
a casing, an electro-magnet extending transversely of said casing from near one side thereof to near the other side thereof, and a vibratory member 1n sald casing comprlsmg an armature and a resilient mounting member connected therewith, having a blade mounted on one end thereof and mounted on said casing near the other endthereof, said member lying vbetween `the end of said magnet and one side of said casing and having a portion lying nearer the center line of said casingrearwardly of said magnet.
6. In a device of the character described, a casing, an electro-magnet extending transversely of said casing from near one side thereof to near the other side thereof and a vibratory member-in said casing comprising an armature and a resilient mounting mem#` ber connected therewith, having a blade mounted on one end'thereof and mounted on said casing near the other end thereof, lying between the end of said magnet and one side of saidcasing, and having portions extending toward the centerline of said .casingon both sides of said magnet.
