Be it known that I, JOHN J. ScULLY, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, and a resident of Bridgeport, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful'lm'provement in Electric Switches for Phonographs, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to electric switches and, while capable of a wide variety of uses, has especial utility when applied to the {controlling of the motor circuit of a phonograph adapted to record dictation.

The invention is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which is shown on the accompanying drawing, butit is to be expressly understood that the drawing is for purposes of illustration only and is not to be construed as a definition of the limits 'of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims for that purpose.

In said drawing, 1 designates an electrically operated device to be controlled, shown as a phonograph of known construction and driven by an electric motor 2 within the cas-- ing 3. Said casing is shown provided with an aperture 4 in the top wall thereof over which is suitably secured a switch plate 5 which, in addition to an aperture 6 for a switch-operating member, mayalso be provided with apertures for other controlling mechanism of the phonograph.

pending through the aperture 4 into the in-' tenor of the motor casing is a'bracket 7 comprislng portions in three planes shown as right-angularly disposed. The main portion 8 of said bracket is adapted to support the swltch casing; a second portion 9 extends at right angles from said portion 8 and, as shown, is in the form of a narrow elongated foot by which said bracket may be supported as by screws 10; a third portion 11 extends at right angles to both said foot 9 and said main portion 8,and is designed to support the switch-operating member.
While said bracket may be constructed in Extending through the aperture 6 in the switch plate 5 to a position where it may be conveniently operated by the hand, is a switch-operating member shownas a lever 12 pivotally supported, as by a screw 13, from the extension 11 of the bracket 7. Said lever is provided with a projection or nose 14, and mounted in any suitable Way on the main portion 8 of the bracket, as by screws 15, is a curved spring 16 designed to cooperate with said projection or nose 14 and retain the lever in either of the-on or off positions of the switch. If desired, the extension 11 of the bracket 7 may be provided with a lug 17 to constitute astop for the lever 12 at one limit of its range of movement. j
Supported by the main portion 8 of the bracket 7 is a switch casing 18 of any suitable construction and material, such as porcelain. Extending through the rear wall of said casing are the lead wires 19 which, at their inner ends, are connected to the terminal studs or bolts 20. The heads of said bolts may be embedded in the respectlve recesses provided for their reception by any suitable material such as wax. Said terminal studs or bolts 20 carry on the lnner face of the rear wall of said casing a pair of terminals 21 shown as in the form of flared springs, said springs being shown as secured to said studs by the nuts 22 and washers 23. Said casing is also provided with a cover 24 suitably secured to the casing as by bolts 25 projecting through apertures. in said casing and receiving nuts 26 upon their outer threaded ends. The portion 8 of the bracket may be provided with apertures as shown to receive said nuts 26, and the heads of said bolts may be embedded in the recesses provided in the casing for their-reception by any suitable material such as wax. Said cover is provided with a boss 27 shown as exteriorly threaded and positioned centrally of the cover, said boss extending through an aperture 28 in the portion 8 of said bracket and receiving on its outer end a nut 29 by which the casing is secured to said bracket.

ture in said boss is a contact member in the form of a plunger 30, said plunger belng shown as forked at its outer end and carry- 'conical head 33, said head being suitably insulated from the plunger proper, as by the insulating bushing 34, and being secured to said plunger in any suitable way as by the nut 35.
- In use, the bracket 7 is attached to the switch plate 5 by the screws 10, the sw1tchoperating lever 12 is pivotally mounted on the bracket xtension 11, and the swltch casing 18 is secured to the bracket portion 8 by the threaded boss 27 and nut 29, the latter attachment requiring no rotation of the casing. In off position, the lug 17 constltutes a limiting stop for theoperatlng lever 12 while in on position, the edge of the aperture 6 constitutes a limiting stop for said lever. In either of its positions, the lever is retained against accidental displacement by the coaction of the nose or projection 14 on said lever with the high portion of the curved spring 16, said projection snapping to one side or the other of said high portion of the spring and being retained in such positions by the resiliency thereof.
While the embodiment shown on the drawing has been described with considerable particularity, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not to be limited to the form shown, as the same is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions some of which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, while certain features thereof are capable of use without other features thereof. Reference is therefore to be had to the claims hereto appended for a definition of the limits of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. In an electricswitch, electric terminals,
member to open and close said circuit, a projection on said pivoted member and a curved neonate spring cooperating with said projection to retain said switch members in open and closed positions.
2. In an electric switch, the combination with an angular bracket, formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to shape, of circuit terminals supported by a portion of said bracket at one side thereof, means adapted to connect and disconnect said terminals, a controlling lever mounted within the angle of said bracket at the other side from said terminals, and means connecting said lever with said means.
3. In an electric switch, the combination with an angular bracket, of circuit terminals supported by said bracket, means for connecting and disconnecting said terminals, a controlling lever mounted within the angle of said bracket and operatively connected to said means, and a resilient lever-engaging means between said bracket and said lever engaging the lever on one side of the pivot of the latter at a point right angularly re moved from the operative connection of the lever.
4. In an electric switch, the combination with an angular bracket formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to shape, of circuit terminals supported by said bracket at one side thereof, means for connecting and disconnecting said terminals, an integral support bent from the bracket and extending into the angle thereof at the other side from terminals secured to said bracket at one side thereof, a reciprocating member for connecting and disconnecting said terminals, said member including a rod passing through said bracket, a controlling lever mounted in the angle of said bracket at the other side from the terminals and operatively connected to said rod, a resilient member mounted on said bracket, and a lug on sald lever opposite the pivot of the same adapted to contact with said resilient member.

In an electric switch, the combination wlth an angular bracket having a bearingsupport extending into its angle, a controllmg lever pivotally mounted on said supp ort, a V-shaped lug on said lever opposite 1ts pivot, and directed toward one member of said bracket, a sinuous spring mounted on said bracket opposite said lug and contacting therewith, a switch plate mounted on the other member of said support and having an opening through which said lever passes, circuit terminals carried by said bracket, and means operated by said leverfor connecting and disconnecting said terminals,

8. In an electric switch, the combination with a bracket comprising vertical and horizontal members, a bearing-support depending from said horizontal member into the angle defined by said members, a controlling lever pivotallymounted on said support, the stop carried'by said support and extending cuit terminals carried b said bracket, and means operable by said ever for connecting and disconnecting said terminals.
9. In an electric switch, the combination with a bracket having an opening, of a casing at one side of the bracket having an ap-- ertured boss extending through said openin means engaging the boss at the other si e of the brac et for securement to said bracket, circuit terminals insaid casing, a reciprocating member passing through the aperture of said boss and carrying means adapted to connect and disconnect said terminals, and a controlling lever supported by said bracket and operatively connected 'to said reciprocating member.
10. In an electric switch adapted to be secured to a supporting structure, a bracket comprising a mounting portion and a switch supporting portion bent'therefrom and provided with an opening, an insulated casing secured to one side of the supporting portion and having electric terminals therein, a reciprocating member movable through said opening adapted ti) cooperate with the terminals to open and close the circuit, a lever pivotally mounted on the bracket, connected at one end to the reciprocating member to reciprocate it, and having a handle portion, a projection on the lever extending from the pivot toward the switch-supporting portion of the bracket, and spring means mounted upon said portlon adapted to cooperate with the projection to retain the switch member in open or closed position.

In a'nelectric switch, a bracket comprisin a mounting portion adapted to be secure to a supporting. structure, and a switch-supporting portion bent therefrom in a plane at right angles thereto and provided w1th an opening, and a third portion bent in a plane at right angles to the other two portlons, an insulated casing secured to one side of the supporting portion and having electric terminals therein, a reciprocating member movable through said opening adapted to cooperate with the terminals to open and close the circuit, a lever mounted on the third portion of the bracket, 'connected at one end to the reciprocating member to reciprocate it, and having a handle portion.
12. In an electric switch, a bracket comprising a mounting portion adapted to be secured to a supporting structure, and a switch-supporting portion bent therefrom in a plane at right angles thereto and provided with an opening, and athird portion bent from the mounting portion in a plane at right angles thereto and to the plane ofthe supporting portion, an insulated casing secured to one side of the supporting portion and having electric terminals therein, a reciprocating member movable through said opening adapted to cooperate with the terminals to open and close the circuit, a lever .JOHN J.
