Description

Patented Apr. 2l, 1925.
UNITED srixxr-lss;v
PATENT orifice. f
CHARLES GILBERT HAWLEY,` QF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO LOCOMOTIVE FIR BOX COMPANY, 0F CHvlCALrO,v ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
LOCOMOTIVE BOILER.
Application flled May 13,
` andsteaming attachments to and within the rebox of the boiler, thereby adding greatly to the heating surfaces of the firebox and bringing about a rapid circulation of the water throughout the boiler, whereby all of the heating surfaces of the boiler are increased in efficiency. n .i
The particular obj ect of the invention is to` provide `water-circulating elements or at-y tachments which may be readily placed in ireboxes of ordinary design, and which, in themselves shall be of simple and inexpensive form.
- My invention will be readily understood on reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l isa vertical longitudinal section of a locomotive irebox embodying" my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof; Fig. 3 is like yunto Fig. l, but illustrates a water'heating-and-circulating attachment of a more restricted form; Fig. 4 is a cross section taken from Fig. 3'; Fig. 5 is a plan viewv taken from Fig. 3; Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are detailed views of one of the attachments,
the better to disclose the construction thereof.
I have herein shown locomotive ireboxesy of both plain (Fig. 3) and combustion chamber (Fig. l) types. The parts 2 and 3 will be recognized as respectively the crown sheet and the throat sheet of the lirebox. Briefly, I provide the throat sheet with a horizontal slot or opening 4 and the crown sheet with a longitudinal slot or opening 5.l By prefer* lence two pairs of openings are formed in the sheet, as represented in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. For each pair of openings, which obviously are at right angles to one another. I provide a water-steaming-and-circulating element in` the form of a hollow stay-bolted water wall. The water walls ofv Figs. l and 2 are marked A. Those of Figs. 3, 4 and r5 are marked B.
192:2. y serial No. 5so,ee2. y
They differ only in shape, the wall A beingl the Wider at the top andV presentinga longer outlet opening or slot 5 in the crown sheet.
Each of these members'or hollow walls com` prises ytwo sheets of metal preferably. of the same kind and thickness as the crown and side sheets of the firebox. These two sheets are warped o1" twisted (by any suitable means) into substantially the shapes herein depicted. Their edges are then ianged together as well shown in Figs. 7 and 9. The
'flanged edges are united by welds 6, leaving only the upper and lower ends of the wall open. The spaced-apart sheets are joined by closely spaced stay-bolts 7, as they must withstand the internal pressure of the boiler. By lpreference the upper and lower ends of leach member are flanged outward as shown in Fig. 9 in order that they may be welded i to respective sheets 2 and 3. By preference the flanges 8 are made wide enough to receive certain of the stay-bolts9 and 10, so that ythe member may be spoken of as finding support from the shell of the boiler. s y
The heating surface thus added to the lirebox is of the utmost importance and as will be obvious the rapid heating and evaporation of water within these members `brings about a vigorous fore-and-aft circulation of water in the boiler. An important result consists in the constant flooding of the crown sheet of the irebox with waterfrom these tortuous or 4contorted water walls. The flooding of the crown sheet insures the safety thereof in the event of low water in the boiler. l
The oppositely or reversely disposed members or walls of each i'ireb'ox serve as in the nature of a fire arch therein, and, as illusstrated in Fig. 4, they may be supplemented by a number of arch brick l2. These brick are vconveniently supported by the watercirculating members. Furthermore, the oppositely disposed contorted wallsadmirably serve the purpose of directing lthe lfirebox flames energetically `against the` side and crown sheets of the irebox. s
A. distinct purpose 'in this invention and attained hereby resides in the iiexibility of the twisted or contorted members through which they are enabled to absorb all expansion and contraction stresses which might tend to disrupt the same or the connections thereof to the crown and throat sheets.l
Having thus described my invention, I claim :is new and. desire to 'secure by Letters Patent:
1. A locomotive boiler and its contained irebon in ornbinati-on with pair of hollow stay-bolted water walls applied to the lirebox, said walls being oppositely twisted and each thereof presenting a horizontallyY e'loni-v gated intake opening at the front leg of the lirebox and a like outletVV openingl iongitndinally elongated in the crown sheet of the ir'ebx.
2L locomotive boiler and its contained irebox in coi'nbination with a pair of hollow stay-bolted water walls applied to the lirep box, said walls being oppositely twisted and 20 din'xlly elongated in the crownA sheet of the each thereof presenting a horizontally elongrited intakeopening at the' front leg of the fi'rebox and a like outlet opening longituezroh thereof presenting a horizontally elongated intake opening at the front leg of the ireb'ox and a like outlet opening longitudinelluv elongated in the Crown sheet of the irebox, the lower portions of said walls oo'ii'stitnting n partial arch in the lower front part of the lirebox, and lirebriel; appliedto said walls and therewith completing u fire arch in the lower forward part of seid firebox.
ln testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of May, 1922.
CHARLES GILEERT HAVLEY.
