UNITED STATES` PATENT or Fics. j
i `LMEOIN'APvlD L. BASSETT," OF SIOUX'FLLS., SOUTH DAKOIIAV WHEEL runnen.
y Application and Mayi?, 192s, seria-1 meenam. Renewed `January 12s, i925.
Be it lrnown that I, LEONARD L. Bas'sn'rr,
acitizen of the United States, `residing at e j sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have `invented cer- `tainnew and useful Improvements in. Vheel Fullers; and .l do declare` the following to `be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in. the` art to which it appertains,` to .make
and use the same.
Myinvention relates to improvements in tools "for `pulling gear wheels and other wheelsfrom shafts and it is thelprincipal object of` this invention to provide a tool of this character in which the pull hooks may be adjusted` with respect tothe cross arm of the tool, to a great number of positions, thus adapting the device for use in 2O connection with gear wheels and the like of numerous sizes,`novel provision beingmade for holding the cross arm and pull hooks in their relatively adjusted positions.
A `further object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of adjustable braces for the pull hooks, which will p-revent accidental slippage thereof from the work. j
l/Vith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying j drawings.
screw 2 or other shaft-engaging thrust device. Each end portion ofthe cross arm 1 is formedwith a longitudinal slot 3 which preferably extends from the end of the arm to a point adjacent the thrust device 2. A pair of pull hooks l pass through the slots `3 and are located in a plane common to the j axis of the thrust device 2, the shanlrsof the hooks l being formed with longitudinally spaced openings 5 for registration with any of a plurality of transverse openings 6 with which the cross arm 1 is provided. Pins 7 .are insertable through the registering openingsto pivotallyconnect the hooks 4 with i 34e-st the cross head 1 and by novel means de" scribed below, these pins `are held removably in place. c
.Longitudinally adjustable diagonal braces 8 ,are provided between the hooks l andthe cross arm 1, said` braces `being suitably pivoted to the hoolrs asy indicated at 9 by means of appropriate removable pins which i are necessarily removed when adjustingthe hookslongitudinally said pinsS being insertable through anyof the openings. The
ends of thebraces 8 remote from the `pinsQ,
are formed with openings 10 for registration with any of the openings 6, as occasion may require, and headed pins .11 are insertable through the registering openings asshown.
The `braces 8 are `preferably in the forni of turnbuclrles, consisting of three screwthreaded sections as shown and it will be `seen that when theyare longitudinally adjusted to the proper extent, they will hold the hooks 4; engaged with diametrically opposite portions of a wheel or the lilre,y whether the hoolrs be in thel position shown in Fig. 1 or be reversed as illustrated in Fig.
3. The portions of the hooks t adjacent their bills 12, are preferably beveled as indicated at 13, in order that `they maybe readily received between gearfteeth.
For the purpose of holding the pins 7 and 11 in place and permitting removal thereof whenever desired,` I provide a pair of reaining arms 14e which are pivoted at 15 to the intermediate portion of the cross arm 1, the pivotal axes being parallel `with the axes of the openings 6. These arms are preferably formed of spring metal and they normally abut the heads of the pins 7 and 11 to hold the latter in place, as will be clear from `the drawings. However, the arms may be swung to an inoperative position as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus permitting the pins to be removed when making any desired adjustment of the tool.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it `will be seen that an extremely simple and ineX`` pensive tool has been provided which will have an exceptionally wide range of adjustment and will be highly eliicient and reliable. i
Excellentresults have been obtained from the details disclosed and these details are i therefore preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made.
I claim:
l. A Wheel puller comprising a cross arm having a central shaft engaging thrust device, a pair of pull hooks pivoted to the end ortions of said cross arin and longitudinaly and laterally adjustable thereon and braces having a pivotal and adjustable connection at one end With said cross arm and at their opposite ends with said pull hooks, said braces being formed in adjustably connected sections.
2. A Wheel puller comprising a cross arin having` a central shaft-engaging thrust device, and provided with spaced openings in its end portions, pull hooks having openings to register with any of the aforesaid openings, pins insertible through the registering openings and having heads to limit their insertion, and a pair of retaining'arins pivoted to said cross arlns and movable into Contact with the heads of said pins to prevent accidental removal thereof, said retaining arms being sufficiently long to extend over all of the openings of the cross arni to engage the pins regardless ot the openings in which they are located.
8. A structure as specilied in'claini 2, to-
gether with oblique braces for said hooks having openings to register with certain ot the openings of said cross arm, and additional headed pins for passage through these registering openings, said additional pins also being held by said retaining arms.
4. A Wheel puller comprising a cross ai'in having a longitudinal slot in cach end and a .plurality of' longitudinallyr .spaced openings transverse to said slots, the center ot said cross arnn being provided With a shaft engaging thrust device, a pair of pull hooks having portions received Inovably in said slots, longitudinally adjustable braces it'or said hooks having portions received niovablj' in said slots, said hooks and braces having openings for registration with certain openings of said cross arm, headed pins for passage through the registering openings, and a pair of retaining arms pivoted to said cross arm and movable into abutting relation with the heads of said pins to retain the latter in place. j
In testimony whereof I have hereunto ailixed iny signature.
LEONARD L. BASSE' `T.
