PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR F. VAN MARTER, OF AURORA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE SHAFTS AND POLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,403, dated July 21, 1874; application filed April 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern v Be it known that I, OSCAR F. VAN MARTER, of Aurora, Cayuga county, State of New York, have invented an improvement in metal tips for shafts, whiflletrees, or other carriage or vehicle parts.
The object of my invention'is to prevent the abrasion, wear, or disfigurement of the leather covering used on the shafts, &c., of carriagework, the following being an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsletters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3, an improved mode of effecting the desired end.
My invention is illustrated more in detail in Fig. 2, in which A represents the metal tip, provided with the overlapping sleeve B. The sleeve B has a chainfered end, as seen at b, and a shoulder inside, as seen at a. 0 represents the leather covering, and D the shaft, whiffletree, or other carriage part.
It will be evident that, in driving on the metal tip A, the sleeve B will overlap and cover efl'eetually the otherwise exposed end of the leather covering 0, and thus prevent any wear, tear, or abrasion of O.
Fig. 3 represents another mode of effecting the same result. A represents thejtip b, the chamfered end. the tip A is provided simply with a chambered recess having a shoulder, a, for the same purpose and end already described.
I claim as my invention The combination of the metal tip A with the leather covering 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
OSCAR F. VAN MARTER.
