Tomi-ED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN KARTHEISER, or A RORA, ILLINOIS.
oAR-noon-Loox -NG MEANS.
Application filed May 16, 19a. Serial No. 639,339.
To all whom it may concern: .1 Be it known that I, JoHN KARTHEISER, a i? citizenof the United States, and a resident of Aurora, in the county of-Kane and State 5 ofIllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Door-Locking Means,- of which thefo-llowing is a specifioationf My invention relates to new and useful car door-locking means, and more particularly to means; for operating and for locking doors of railway box cars'such as are used for shipping grain, autos, stock and the like.
The main object of the invention is to pro- .vide locking meansfor the door of abox car or the like with which said door can be locked'in the. ordinary closed position, and
v can alsobe locked in a partly open position to provide a slotfor ventilation but which slot is too narrow for the entrance of a person. V Another object is to provide lever means acting in conjunction with the locking means for part-ly opening the door to provide convenient access to the hand for fully opening the door.
.. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and, arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Theinvention will be best understood by referenceto the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my invention, in which the door is shown locked in partly open position;
Fig, 2 is an enlarged detail sect-ion on line 22of*Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view showing the door locked in closed position, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section on line 4-4: of Fig. 3.
My invention is adapted for use on a rail- 5 way car, a truck, or other similar means of transportation used for hauling grain, furniture, autos, stock, etc., and is, especially adapted for use on railway box cars. The presentform of invention has therefore been i illustrated in connection with a railway box car 10 which is provided with a door 11 slidable in the guiding means 12 and 12 and which overlaps the frame post 13 and rests against the edge portion 14 of the door frame, as best shown in Fig. 2.
The particular form of construction illustrated in the drawings comprises a base plate or means 15 mounted on the car ad jacent the edge portion 14 of the door frame. and a yoke member or embracing means 16 is mounted on said plate and with it is fastened to the car by means of bolts 17 passing through flanges l8 and 18 on the ends of said yoke member 16 and through said plate 15. A lever 19 is mounted between plate 15 and yoke 16 and is fulcrumed on a bolt 20 passing through a depressed portion 16 on said yoke. A. bar 21 is pivoted on the car door, is receivable in said yoke, and is engaged by the lever 19 for partly opening said door in order that the hand may be con veniently entered between the door and the frame for further opening the door. and also for holding said bar and the door in various positions. This engagement of the lever with the bar may be effected in any suitable manner, and as shown in the drawings, is effected by means of notches provided on. said bar and by a pin 23 provided on the lever for engaging in said notches, the top of yoke 16 co-operating with said means to prevent the upward movement of said bar or withdrawal of said bar while said lever is in vertical or locked position. as shown in full lines in the drawings. To partly .open saiddoor it is merely necessary to swing the lever outward. as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Means providedfor locking the lever in. position, which means includes an outwardly extending portion orflange 2-1 on plate 15 and a co-operating portion or flange 25 on lever 19, and a sealing pin 26 provided with a slot QT'through whit-hextends a rivet 28 fastened on the lever. Said sealing pin is mo able downward into registerable' openings in said flanges to hold said lever and associated mechanism in locking position, and suitable sealing means '29 is fastened through an opening 30 at the lower end of the pin to seal and lock said pin 26 in position.
It is apparent from the above disclosure that with locking means constructed accord ing to my invention the pin on the lever is engageable in one of the notches on bar 21 and that said lever may be locked in position by means of the sealing pin 26 for locking the door in partly open position, as shown in Fig. l; and that said pin 23 of the warm ion and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish TtO .be limited to the precise details of construction set fortllnbut desire to avail myself of such variations modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with .a :car and a door thereon, a member swingably mounted on one thereof, .a lever mounted on the other thereof, means on said lever engageable with said swingable member for partly opening said door, means embracing said lever and said member and being arranged to prevent release movement of saidmember while said lever is in locked position, and means for locking said lever while in engagement with said swii-igable member zfior locking said door in either a closed position or in a partly opened position.
2. In combination with a car and its door, a bar pivoted to said door, yoke means mounted on the car for receiving said bar, a lever connected with saidyokc means and engaging said bar for partly opening said door, the upper part of said yoke means preventing removal of said bar ltrom :said lever while said lever is in its locked position, and
means on said let er :and car for locking :sai'd lever w: e engaging said bar to hold said door in either a closed position or in a partly opened position.
3. In comb-mats] n with a car and its door, a base plate nor feed on said car, a yoke mounted on said plate, a bar pivoted on said door and 'movi-r g in said yoke, :a lever mounts ed on said plate for engaging said bar and holding it in position in said yoke, a sealing pin movably mounted a slot :and rivet on said lever, and co-operating means on said lever and "on said plate for receiving said sealing pin to lock said mechanism and therewith said door in position.
4:. In combination with a car and its door, a platemonnted on said car, a yoke mounted on said plate, a notched bar mounted on said door and moving between said yoke and plate, a lever inoimted between said yoke and plate .and having means engageahle' in either one of the tches said bar, and means on said iever and said plate for looking said iever in position with its engaging means one of said notches to retain said bar and door in either one of several selective positions "5. In combination with a car and its door, a bar pivoted on said door, base me'ans'and superposed yoke means mounted on said car for receiving said vbar, a member swingable between said base and yoke means and engageable with said bar, an integral'fiange on said base means, and ace-operating integral flange and sealing member on said swingable member, said flanges having registerable openings for receiving said sealing member.
In combination with a car and its door, a notched bar pivoted to the door, means mounted on the car for embracing said bar, a lever connected with said embracing means and having a pin for engaging in a notch on said bar for moving said bar and therewith said door to partly open position, and
means for locking said lever in position to retain said bar and attached door in a predetermined position, the upper part of said embracing means preventing the upward movement of said bar and thereby its re moval from the lever pin while said lever is locked in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence'o'f two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN KARTHEISER.
