I THE GRAPHIC C0. PHOTO-L NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. DOIVELL, OF COLUMBIA, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, JAMES FRIEL, AND JOHN LATTA, JR., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,322, dated July 21, 1874; application filed June 9, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. F. DOWELL, of Columbia, in the county of' Maury and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in .the construction and arrangement of a churn, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln order to enable -others skilled in the artto which my invention appertains to make and ilse the same I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section, and
Fig. 2 a cross-section on line y y.
-A represents the churn-box, made either in cylindrical form or slightly tapering, so as to be of a little smaller diameter at the top than at the bottom. On the inside of the bon' are secured two or more ribs, B B, running parallel with the sifles and a short distance from them. These ribs are made Lshaped in form, as shown, and being set at a short distance from the sides ofthe churn-box, they form each two cutting-edges at x against which the milk strikes as it is moved around by the dasher. The dasher is composed of a frame, C, having its sides beveled, as shown, and within the frame is a perforated board or blade, D, standing diagonally in a direction opposite to that in which the sides of the frame are in" clined or beveled. In the center of the bottom bar of the frame is a pivot, a, which lits in a step, b, secured in the bottom of the churn. From the center ot' the top bar ofthe frame extends a shaft, d, up through the lid Gr of the box, which shaft is to be revolved by any suitable mechanical means. By the con struction of the dasher the milk is agitated violently and thrown forcibly against the double-edged ribs on the sides of the churn, whereby it becomes thoroughly broken and the butter comes rapidly. The lid G is held down on the churn by means of spring-catches h le, which are secured to the sides of the churn and pass up through slots in the edge thereof'.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The L-shaped ribs B B, attached on the inside ot' and a short distance from the sides of the churn-box, to form two cutting-edges, :c substantially as herein set forth.
2. The churirdasher, consisting of the frame C, having inclined or beveled sides, and the perforated blade D, set diagonally in the frame, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I at'lix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. l
JAMES B. F. DOWELL.
