TRAFFIC SIGNAL.
Application led September 3, 1924. Serial No. 735,594.
To all whom t my concern.'
Be it known that MILo H. BECK, citizen of the United States, residing at Oilton, in the county of Creek and State of Oklahoma, has invented certain newand useful lImprovements in Traic Signals, ofl which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to traffic signal devices for installation in roadways, preferably at the crossings of streets or other roadways, and at railway and trolley line crossings, and has for one of its objects to provide a device of this character of Simple construction and yieldably supported in vertical position across the roadway and over which a vehicle may be moved to depress the same, and with means for automatically restoring the device to vertical position after the vehicle passes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character operative by vehicles approaching from either direc tion, and which will not interfere with the ordinary traic of the roadway.
W'ith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features` of construction as hereinafter shown andl described and then specifically pointed out.
in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred. embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the im-V f proved device/installed uponv a roadway or pavement, the signal bea-ring device being in elevation and the pavement in section.
Figure 2 is a transverse' section with the i improved device in depressed position.
Figure 3 is a section, enlarged, on the line of Figure 1, looking in the d-irection of the arrow.
Figure 4 is. a section, enlarged, on the line 4-4 of Figure l, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The improved device may be installed wherever warning to passing vehicles is required, for instance at street or roadway crossings, railway or trolley line crossin s and the like, to notify the operators of t e vehicles that acrossing is near, but for the purpose of illustration, the improved device is shown installed in a section of pavement,
for instance asphalt or cement, and indicat.
The improved device includes' a pair of' llegend bearing plate or frame 16.
the like, and. indicated at 12. At its upper end each of the supports 11 is provided with a half bearing 13, with a detachable cap 14 for eachV half bearing.
Journalled in the bearings is a rotatablel member 15, and attached tp the latter .is a
Coiledy around the member 15 adjacent to the bearings are springs 17, one end engaged at 18 in the member 11 or its half bearing 13, and the other end extended and l bent at 19 tobear over the adjacent portionsofthe member y16. The springs are reversely coiled, with the terminals 19 bearing against opposite sides of the member 16, one spring thus exerting its force to move the plate in one direction, and the other 'spring to move the plate in the opposite direction. The springs thus "operate against each other to hold the plate yieldably invertical position, and automatically return it to vertical position after being turned down from either direction." I
The member 16 will be provided with any suitable designating data, such as the word Stop, as shown, or'other words, or iny some distinctive color or combination of colors or design to render the member con spicuous to an approaching vehicle.
The device will be installed at an convenient point. It may be installed directly inthe line of the trailic ofthe roadway so that most of the passing vehicles will pass over it, or'located at one side andI operative onl by' a small portion of the passin ve'- hic es butin plain view of all, approaling from either direction.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be linexpensively manufactured, and of any desired size or material or combination of materials.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the d rawi and set forth in the specification, but 1t will be understood that ymodifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the Vprinciple of the invention or sacricing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my `lnvention what 1. A trailic signal including spaced carrier ldevices adapted' to be supported 'in'.,a roadway, a signal bearing element mounted for oscillation relative to said carrier devices, a springcoupled to one of said car.
rier devices oftheignal bearingvelement, and a spring coupled to the other carrier device and voperative against the other face of said sig# nal bearing element said springs coacting -to maintain the signal bearing element yieldably in vertical position.
2, Atraiic signal including spaced carrier devices adapted to be supportedin a.
froadway, and each provided with a bearing at the' upper end, a support mounted forl and operative' against one face rotation in said bearings',xa signal bearing element attached to said support, a spring i coupled to one of said carrier devices an operative against one face ofv the signal 15 bearing element, and a spring coupled to the l other carrier device and operative against the other face of said signal bearing ele` In testimony whereof, I aix iny signazo
