TRAFFIC coNTRoL SIGNAL CONSTRUCTION Filed Jan. 29, 195s ATTORNEYS TRAFFIC CONTRL SIGNAL CONSTRUC'HN George T. Locke, Portsmouth, hio
Application January 29, 1953, Serial No. 333,866
1 Claim. (Cl. 40--125) This invention relates to tralc control signals, and more particularly to traiic control signals of the type embodying a post and a permanent sign plate mounted at the upper end of the post, the plate carrying indicia indicating Stop, direction, or as a matter of fact any instructions to expedite traiiic and eliminate accidents.
In view of the fact that the usual stop traflic signals are arranged on plates with the side faces thereof disposed at right angles to the roadway on which the signal is positioned, only the narrow edge of the traffic signal is visible to the trac operating in the opposite direction at right angles, or crossing the road on which the traffic signal is placed, to the end that operators of vehicles moving at right angles to the wide side surfaces of the signal plate, cannot determine the nature of the signal.
It is therefore the primary object of the present invention to provide a miniature replica of the traflic sign, mounted on the main traffic sign preferably extended above the main traic sign where it will be clearly visible, with the side faces thereof so disposed at right angles to the side faces of the main sign as to indicate the nature of the main signal or sign to warn operators of vehicles traveling at right angles to the road on which the main traffic sign is located.
Another object of 'the invention is to provide miniature signs colored in the same manner as the main signs on which the miniature signs are positioned, so that operators of vehicles viewing the miniature signs may identify the main sign which is invisible from their point of view and govern their speed accordingly.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details` of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a main stop sign shown in dotted lines, and to which the miniature sign forming the essence of the present invention is secured.
Fig. 2. is an edge elevational view of the main stop sign with the miniature sign attached.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference char- States Patent ice acter 5 indicates the usual sign post of the conventional traiiic control signal, and to which the plate 6 is secured, at the upper end thereof.
The plate 6 may be of any desired shape 'and will of course be supplied with the indicia to be used for indicating a predetermined signal.
In the present showing the signal is used as a stop signal, and the word Stop appears on the side face of the plate 6, as clearly shown by Fig. l of the drawing.
The reference character 7 indicates a miniature stop sign which includes the arm which is substantially wide and secured to the upper edge of the plate 6, by means of rivets 9.
The miniature sign 7 also includes the plate it) which is shaped to conform to the shape of the plate 6 of the main sign. The plate i0 is created to provide a black border on a yellow background on both sides, the wording of the sign with which the miniature sign is used, having been omitted on the miniature sign to avoid confusion, It is obvious that motorists will become acquainted with the painting of the miniature signs and will be in a position to distinguish the signal carried by the main sign, by the coloring, to the end that the motorist driving at right angles to the road on which the main sign is positioned, or at crossings, may slow down in ample time to prevent overrunning the crossing to cause an accident.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, operators of vehicles may, by observing the miniature sign which is secured at the upper edge of the main sign and which has its side faces disposed at right angles to the side faces of the main sign, readily determine the nature of the main sign, although only the edge of the plate of the main sign is visible from the road extending at right angles with respect to the Vroad on which the main sign is located.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
The combination with a stationary roadside traic signal, said signal including a post and a sign mounted upon said post, said sign having trac control indicia thereon and being of a shape and a color which are indicative of said indicia, said signal adapted to be located at the junction of two roads which meet at right angles with the sign facing traflic approaching the signal from one of said roads, of a second traflic signal including an arm and a plate mounted upon said arm, said second trac signal being secured to the first signal with the plate portion thereof being above said sign and disposed in a plane which is at right angles to said sign, and said plate insofar as its shape and color are concerned being a miniature replica of said sign, whereby drivers of automobiles approaching the junction on the second one of said roads can determine from the shape and color of said plate the indicia on the rst mentioned traiiic control signal.
