l have overcome these objections by constructing an air cooled skew back.

Another feature of my improved skew back is due to the fact that the supporting flange 3l is beveled on its side at 34 which facilitates the use of the charging machine when loading the furnace. In the event that the charging machine is too high it will Vstrike against the sloping surface 3e of the air cooled skew back and be deflected downward intoy the furnace proper.
`When the charge box came into contact with the vertical face of the Old form of skew back the impact weakened the arch so that there was danger of it falling in upon subsequent charges.
The door D is supported on hangers 40 and L1 secured to a. horizontal rod 42, the ends of the `rod at 43 and 4A engaging with guiding cam shaped grooves 51 and 52 in supports secured to the buck stays 10, as shown. Suitable hoisting means (not loo shown) are used to lift the door in the direction of the arrows shown in Figs. l and 2. As the ends of the rod 4t2 engage the walls of the guide grooves 51 and 52 the door upon its being hoisted will be removed from the furnace mouth by the cam action of the ends of the rod 4;-2 on the walls ofy the guide grooves 51 and 52, as clearly indicated, the door being thereby removed from the furnace mouth and lifted to a suitable position just above it.
By above described it is apparent (11) that there is provided a structure of su Yicient resistance above the line of thrust of the arch to withstand the stresses of the same, or, (2) that the securing points are above the line of pressure on the skew back, which latter is supported by the buck stays and impinges against them above the line of pressure, (3) that the skew back is of such a construction and so supported that the greater portion of its body or structure is in contact with the air and that it i-s in posi tion to conduct the heat away from the furnace so that it may be absorbed by the surrounding atmosphere (et) and that by reason of its beveled edged formation just above the furnace mouth an eflicient guiding means is present to engage the charging means when loading without danger of permenently destroying the structure due to t-he impact of the furnace charging means. As changes of construction could be made withinvthe scope of my invention it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the. accompanying drawing shall be interp-reted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a furnace having an arched roof means of the construction of slrew back and upright buck stays, a supporting skew baclr having an upright plate resting against said buclr stays, a rib projecting from said plate opposite said buck stays and a downward extensionv of saiciplate below said rib inclined in a plane at right angle to the thrust of said arch.
2. ln a furnace having an arched roof and upright buclr stays, a supporting skew back having an upright plate resting against said buck stays, a rib projecting from said plate opposite said buclr stays over and spaced a slight distance above said arch, and a downward extension of said plate below said rib supporting, and at substantially a rightl angle to the thrust of said arch.
3. An arch supporting skew back`comprising a dat plate member having a portion adjacent one edge inclined at an angle to the plane of said plate and a rib member adjacent the intersection of the planes of the flat and inclined portions.
