COVERING FOR FIRE-DOOR OPENINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,636, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed April 18, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM H. HOAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Amsterdam, county of Montgomery, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Covering for Fire-Door Openings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of the top of the fire-door opening in a steam-boiler furnace and in the rear of the boiler over the flues; and the obj ect of my invention is to provide a means for holding a refractory substance in position over the fire-door opening and which may be adjusted and parts thereof removed when desired. I accomplish this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a furnace provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a steam-boiler furnace. Fig. 3'is a plan of the frame. Fig. 4. is a section along the lines 1 1 on Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section along the lines 2 2 on Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a plan along the lines 3 3 on Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a plan through the air-chamber, and Fig. 8 is an end view of the plate placed in the form of an arch.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I construct a frame A, which is composed of a series of cross-shaped metallic plates A, secured together by bolts B B, passing through ties b 1), extending across the adjoining ends of each of the arms of said cross-shaped plates and also through the ends of the plates. The ends of the adjoining cross-shaped plates A are secured by means of bolts 0 O, passing through the sides thereof and through corresponding ties 0. Thus I arrange a number of plates A A together in such a manner as to leave openings A A at frequent intervals and place a sufficient number of the plates together to form a covering for the fire-door opening in a steam-boiler furnace.
In contact with the masonry above the firedoor opening I place themetallic plate E, which is supported by the standards 6 6, resting upon the frame A. Extending across the frame A, I place a series of bars F, resting upon the frame, to which I secure by hooks f,

passing through the openings A A into the frame, the anchor -frame H. The anchorframe H is thus suspended below the frame A throughout its whole extent, and at its end toward the interior of the furnace it projects upwardly to a point slightly above the frame A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The anchorframe H is provided with slots h, within which the anchors G are adjustably secured. The lower edge of the slots 71. are provided with notches h. At the end of each of the slots h, nearest the center of the anchor-frame H, is formed a square opening 71 In the slots h I place the anchor G. The anchor G is provided with a shank upon which are placed two lugs g, slightly separated from each other, the shank 9 between the two lugs g passing into the slot h at the squared opening W, the opening 77. being large enough to admit of the passage of the lug g. The anchor G is then moved through the slot it until it reaches the notch h, in which it is desired to locate the anchor. Then the anchor is turned, bringing the narrower side of the shank into the notch h, where it fitssnugly and is held securely in position, one
of the lugs g being on one side of the anchor frame, the other of the lugs g on the opposite: side of the anchor-frame, the shank g -.be'-- tween the two lugs fitting securely within the notch h of the sloth. The arms of the anchor are usually constructed in the form shown in Fig. 5, being arranged in the form of an open square, the side opposite the shank being broken, leaving a space between the adjoining ends. Extending from one arm to the other of the anchor I place the narrow ties g As a covering for the ends of the anchorframe H, I place the finishing-plate J, extending across from one side of the fire-door opening to the other. The anchors G are placed alternately one on each side of the frames H, as shown in Fig. 6, except on one side of the sections, where the anchors are made double, one on each side of the frame, and a sufficient number of the frames are placed in position over the fire-door opening, as may be desired.
For the purpose of securing the anchorframes together I place the bolts K K, extending through the series of frames from one end to the. other, by means of which the frames.
