IMPROVEMENT IN WASTE-VALVES AND OVERFLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,250, dated July 21, 1874; application filed June 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES FOLEY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Waste-Valve and Overflow, of which the following is a specification:
' The figure is a detail sectional view of my improved device.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved waste or discharge valve and overflow for wash-basins, baths, 850., which shall be simple in construction, easily repaired, and not liable to become choked up or obstructed. The invention consists in the combination of the T-coupling, the large outer pipe provided with a perforated cap, and the inner pipe provided with a rubber-ring valve at its lower end, and a bail and rod or stem at its upper end with the discharge-pipe of a wash-basin or bath and with the waste-pipe, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the pipe leading to the basin or bath. The end of the pipe A is coupled with a casting or T, B, in the lower part of which is formed a conical valve-seat, b, and with its lower arm is coupled a pipe, 0, leading to the sewer or waste-pipe. The upper arm of the T- coupling B is made larger, and with it is connected the end of a larger pipe, D, the upper end of which is provided with a cap, (1, by means of which it is secured to a marble or wood stand. Within the pipe D is placed a smaller pipe, E, around the lower end of which is formed a ring-flange or rib, upon which is placed a rubber ring, F, to rest upon the valve-seat b and form the valve.
I prefer to make the rubber valve Fin two parts, so that when the outer part becomes worn it may be readily replaced with a new one.
The upper end of the pipe E is provided with a bail or cross-bar, c, with the center of which is connected the lower end. of a short rod or stem, G, which passes out through a hole in the center of the cap (1, and has a knob attached to its outer end for convenience in operating the valve. The hole through the cap 61 is elongated or made oval, and the rod or stem G is made oval in its cross section, so that when raised and turned onequarter around its lower end or shoulders formed upon its lower part may rest upon the cap d, holding the valve open.
By this construction, when the valveis closed and water admitted into the wash-basin or bath it will rise in the said wash-basin or bath and in the pipe D until it reaches the level of the upper end of the pipe E, when it will flow off through the pipes E and 0. When the pipe E is raised, opening the valve, the water will flow off through the pipes A and 0, having a wholly unobstructed passage, in which there is nothing for hairs or other rubbish to lodge against, and thus obstruct the outflow of the water, and impede the operation of the valve.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the T- coupling B, the large outer pipe D, provided with a perforated cap, cl, and the inner pipe E, provided with a rubber-ring valve, F, and a bail, e, and rod or stem G, with the discharge-pipe A of a wash basin or bath, and with the waste-pipe 0, substantiall y as herein shown and described.
JAMES FOLEY.
