Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL FAUBEL AND FRIEDRICH KNORR, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUNG-HOLE LOCKS.
Specification formn g part of Letters Patent No. 153,248, dated July 21, 1874; application tiled June 27, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that we, CARL FAUBEL and FRIEDRICH KNORR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bling-Hole Lock, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing', Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section on the line c c, Fig. 2, of our improved bung-hole a top view ofthe same in opened posit-ion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of our invention is to provide,in place of the common bungs, which yare driven into 'the bung-holes of kegs and barrels, and generally lost or thrown away, an improved hermetically sealing lock, which is readily opened and closed without injuring the barrel, so that barrel and lock last a greater period of time.
Our invention consists of a lock plate attached to the bung-hole, which is provided with a hinged hermetically-sealing bung-hole cover, vto be locked by a suitable bolt, and retained in open position in a recess of the baseplate by a band-sprin g catching thereon.
In the drawing, A represents the barrel, keg, or other receptacle for liquors or other fluids, and B the bung-hole of the same. C is the base-plate of our bungholc lock, which is cast or otherwise .produced in a shapevto correspond to the curvature of the barrel A, being` attached thereto by suitable fasteningscrews, and provided with a bushing or `flange, a., fitting into the bung-hole B. rlhe hinged bung-hole cover D is recessed and seated on a shoulder, ai', of bushing a, and closed tightly by means ot' a rubber or other ring, b, placed between the recess of cover D and shoulder a. The bung-hole cover D is locked securely into closed position, after the barrel is filled, by a bolt, E, which enters into a corresponding recess, E", oi' the cover by the action of a key inserted into a countersunk nut with tum. bler connection, or by means ot' a spring or other suitable device for throwing the bolt forward.
By withdrawing the bolt, the cover D may be thrown on its hinge sidewise into a recess, d, of the base-plate C, having the same size as cover D, so as to be out oil the way when filling the barrel or when inserting a vent attachment for admitting the drawing off of the contents.
A band-spring or other catch, c, retains the cover D in position in recess d until detached for being carried back and locked over the bunghole. Suitable guaid-langes f, sidewise of the cover D and recess e, protect the cover against injury during transportation and when in open position. e
The locking device dispenses with the use of bungs and the injury to the barrel by driving them in, while lasting as long as the barrel, being readily transferred to a new one for continued use, forming thus a very convenient device for` closing the bung-hole and preventing the tampering with the contents ot' the barrel.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A bung-hole lock for barrels, kegs, Src., composed of base-plate C, attached to barrel and fitted to bung-hole, hinged hermeticallyclosing cover l), and lock-bolt E, applied and operated substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The lock-plate C, having circular side re# cessrLspring-catch e, and guard-flanges f, for retaining and protecting cover D in open and closed position, substantially as described.
