f REVERSIBLE FAUCET AND BUNG.
To all whom it may concern Be it. known that I, CHARLEs T. DRAPER,.
a citizen of the United States, residing at object the construction of a device of this character which shall be self-locking and es-' peoially adaptable for use in co nnectiori withi sheet metal containing-vessels. Prior to the introduction of this class of containers, it
was quite commonly necessary to transfer many liquids from the barrels employed for transportation, to metallic receptacles or tanks, but at the present time several advantages are attained by using the sheet metal ,eontainingwessels for storing and dis pensing the contents thereof. One disad vantage previously experienced with the com bined faucets and bungs, has been the accidental opening of the faucet-valve during shipment or storage, so that leakage ensues. Again, the prior devices with which I am acquainted, were of such depth that they were not well adapted to use with the ordinary sheet metal containing-vessel. Having these features in mind, it has been my endeavor to construct a practical and serviceable reversible faucet and bung which, in addition, may be interchanged with the usual screw-plug, should the former be Inislaidor broken. The features thereof may be readily explained in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figures 1 and 2 are fragmentary views in vertical section, illustrating a sheet metal containing-vessel, wherein the combined faucet and bung are shown in its two reversible positions; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end view of the container showing the faucet 1n its inner or reversed position and provided'yvlth a cover-cap partly broken away; Fig. 4 Is anenlarged view partially in longitudinal section, illustrating the reversible faucet and hung in more detail, for the purpose of emphasizing the self locking feature, and Fig. 5 shows a modification of the faucet-' member alsoadapted to make the same selflocking.
Throughout the several figures of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 2, 1912. Serial No. 681,191.

drawings, I have employed the same character of reference to indicate similar parts.
In the steel contaiher '0, shown in the drawings, the head 6 thereof is recessed at its bung-hole c. the shallow exterior bushing d, which is welded about said bung-hole. The bushing is threaded both exteriorly and interiorly for the purpose of accommodating respectively a screw cap .e and the ordinary screw-plug (not shown).
The reversible faucet and hung f, best shownin Fig. 4, is secured upon said bushing against the gasket g, by means of the threaded annular cap e. For the purpose of guarding against the entrance of dirt during storage and shipment, a sheet metal cover it may be'interposed between said cap and the flange f of the faucet, when the latter is in its reversed position. The faucet f provided with a transversely bored valve-part f and a T-handle f at right angles to the bore or opening of said valve-part, are all proportioned, so that they may readily pass quite shallow, is of sufiicient depth, however,
so that the one end of the handle f extends within said bushing when the faucet is inserted, for the purpose of making the device self-locking. It is quite obvious that wi h the handle in this position, no amount of jarring, irrespective of the loose fit of the valve-part, will permit the same to turn, and thus prevents leakage.
Another modification is shown in Flg. 5, wherein the faucet is provided with a forward lug f adapted to defeat the forward rotation of the single handle-member f thus preventing the reversal of the faucetmember unless the handle is turned into its self-locking position. Other means may be employed to attain this same result, but the simplest and most advantageous forms, I
believe, are herein shownand described.
Having now set-forth the features of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, the following 1. The combination with a containingvessel, .of a bushing attached at the bunghole thereof, a combined faucet and bung reversible with respect to said bushing; said This recess. accommodatesfaucet \being provided with a rotatable valve-part, and an actuating handle extending in'both directions substantially parallel with the faucet body in the closed position of said valve-part and also within the bushing when the faucet is reversed,:and means i for securing said faucet in either of its reversible positions, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a sheet metal receptacle, of a bushing secured at the bunghole thereof, a reversible faucet and bung a screw-threaded cap adapted to secure the flange of said faucet and bung in either of its reversible positions, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a closed containing-vessel, having a bung-hole, of a combined faucet and bung reversible with, respect to the bung-hole; said faucet being equipped with a rotatable valvepart, and means for locking the same inits closed position when the faucet is inserted within said vessel, and additional means for securing the faucet 1n either of its reversible positions, substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination with a sheet metal receptacle, of a bushing welded about the bung-hole thereof, a reversible faucet and bung associated with said bushing; the same being equipped with a rotatable valvepart, a handle therefor adapted to extend within the bunghole and lock the valve when said member is in its reversed position, and means forpreventing such re? versal of the member with the valve-part in its open position, and additional means for securing said faucet in its reversed position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES T. DRAPER.
