UNITED STATES 1,532,376 PATENT OFFICE.
FRED S. CARR, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CARR FASTENER COM- PANY, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF IIIAINE.
APPARATUS FOR LOCATING SECURING lARTS OF SEPARABLE FASTENERS TO CARRY- ING FABRICS.
Application filed January 16, 1920. Serial No. 351,781.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, FRED S. CARR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Apparatus for Locating locating securing'parts of separable fasteners to carrying fabrics.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide convenient means for insuring correct alignment between cooperating stud and socket members attached to fabrics to be joined together, so as to avoid pulling or wrinkling of the fabric.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes Figure 1 is a side elevation showing diagrammatically two pieces of fabric intended to be secured together by a separable fastener and a preferred form of apparatus for locating one of the members relative to the other and relative to its carrying fabric during the securing operation;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 1 after removal of the fabric to which the fastener member initially secured has been efiected; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section, partly in elevation, on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a stud carrying fabric 4: to which a stud 5 has been secured by sewing or any other suitable ways.
I have also shown a socket-securing fabric 6 to which the socket is to be secured, and which it is desired to have lie smooth relative to the stud-carrying fabric 4 after the socket has been secured and when the stud and socket are in engagement.
In the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, where the stud 5 is initially secured to its fabric, I may utilize means for gripping the socket 7 to the socket-carrying fabric 6, herein typified by the jaws 8 and 9 of a pair of pliers, tweezers or the like, provided with means for axially aligning the stud with the socket during the gripping of the socket to its carrying fabric. In the preferred form of my invention shown, this alignment is effected by providing one of the a'ws, herein shown as 8, with a stud-receiving recess 10 on its outer side and with a socket-locating elementon its inner side, the socket-locating element herein illustrate-d being typified by the projection 11, which may as shown reseinble somewhat the stud.
The points ofthe jaws engaging the socket 7 are preferably arranged in such a way as to leave exposed, when the socket is gripped, a plurality of sewing holes 12 (as shown in Fig. 2) so that the socket may be partially secured to its carrying fabric while gripped in the desired relation to its carrying fabric.
t is of course desirable that the fabrics 4: and 6 be arranged in substantially the normal relationship which they are to occupy in use, during the locating operation. During the sewing operation, the stud-securing fabric may be removed or turned back to permit ready access to the sewing holes of the socket.
It will be understood that for some purposes it may be desirable initially to apply the socket member and then to grip the stud member on the goods, but I prefer initially to attach the stud member, as illustrated.
It will be understood that I use the word fabric in its broader sense to include not only woven materials, but any flexible carrying medium, and that the word pliers is used in its broad sense to include tweezers or other gripping appliances.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of apparatus for locating, one relative to the other, the cooperating members of separable fasteners, and a preferred method of locating such fasteners, it will be understood that major changes involving omission, alteration, substitution and reversal of parts of the apparatus and changes in the method of practicing the same may be efiected without departing from the scope of my invention, as defined in the following claims.
Claims:
1. An appliance for locating relative to one another the stud and socket members of a separable fastener, said appliance pror viding means for locating engagementwith the member initially secured to itsc'arrying part and also providing jaws for gripping the second member and its carrying fabric, whereby the second member is axially aligned with the initially secured member, said jaws formed to permit sewing of the second member to its carrying fabric while the second member and its carrying fabric are gripped by the jaws.
2. An appliance for locating relative to one another the stud and socket members of a separable fastener, said appliance providing means for locating engagement with the stud initially secured to its carrying part and jaws for gripping the socket member and its carrying "fabric with the socket member axially aligned with the stud, said jaws formed to permit access to sewing holes adjacent the periphery of the socket member, whiie the socket member and its carrying fabric are held by the jaws,
3. An appliance for locating relative to one another the stud and socket members of a separable fastener, said appliance providing gripping jaws, one carrying on its gripping i'ace means for locating on said jaw a socket member, said jaw providing locating means at its back for engagement with the stud.
l, An appliance for locating relative to one another the stud and socket members of a separable fastener, said appliance providing gripping jaws, one carrying on its gripping :iace means for locating on'said jaw a socket .member, said jaw providing locating means at its back for engagement with the projecting partof the stud,
'5. An appliance for locating relative to one another the stud and socket members or a. separable fastener, said appliance providing gripping jaws, one supplied, on its gripping face with a socket; member locate ing element and on its outer face with a stud-locating depression.
in testimony whereof, I have signedmy name to this specification.
