UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIEE,
MICHAEL BIGLIN, OF PLEASANT VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPIKE-EXTRACTORS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,233, dated July 21, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL BIGLIN, of Pleasant Valley, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new Improvement in SpikeExtractors, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical side elevation of my improved lever-bar for drawing spikes from railroad-ties, and Fig. 2 a perspective "iew of the spike-hook detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.-
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.-
In the drawing, A represents the draw-bar, of suitable length and thickness; 13, the spikehook, and C the curved plate placed over the top part of the rail. The side flanges or ears to of the spike-hook and rail-plate are pivoted, by cross-pins b, to side recesses d of the lever A, the spike-hook being applied to the outer end of the rail-plate at suitable distance therefrom, at the inner end of the lever-bar A. The spike-hook B is of hollow shape, with recess 0 in the bottom part, the sides of the latter being tapered off toward the recess, so as to be placed under the projecting parts of the spikehead and close around the shank. The curved hook-shaped rail-plate G fits over the top part of the rail, and forms the fulcrum, by which the lever turns when raising the spike.
The straight upward motion of the hook draws the spike completely out of the crosstie without breaking or injuring it, so that it may readily be used again.
The small space which is taken up by the parts of the spike-drawer allows of its application in almost every position of the spike, while its strength and simplicity secure durability and efi'ectiveness.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described spike-extractor, consisting of lever-bar A, pivoted hook B, and pivoted curved plate 0, all constructed, arranged, and put together as set forth.
MICHAEL BIGLIN.,
