E. A. GEOGHEGAN SUPERHEATER Filed April 1.4, 1922 Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
neural) STATES PATENT" OFFICE.
Application filed April 14, 1922. Serial No. 552,748.
To aZZ wIw-m it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. GEoGHE- GAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve= ments in Superheaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to steam superheaters, and has for its object the construction of superheaters for use in locomotive boiler fire tubes which will function to superheat steam which passes through the superheater tubes, and which will impart a whirling motion thereto whereby particles of entrained water Will be forced outwardly against the inner surfaces of the superheater tubes by centrifugal force.
Another object of this invention is to provide means to prevent soot and products of imperfect combustion from. being deposited on the outside of superheater tubes, or on the inside of the fire tubes in which the superheater tubes are placed.
The features of my invention are herein- .after particularly described and pointed out, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1, 1s a central longitudlnal section of a fragment of a locomotive boilerfire-tube with my improved superheater tube therein.
Figure 2, is an end view thereof.
In these drawings A indicates a locomotive boiler fire-tube, and B indicates a return bend superheater tube laced inside of the fire-tube A. Between t e arms of this tube B is )laced a thin metal strip 0, the width of w liCh is substantially the same as the inside diameter of the fire-tube A, adapted to slide easily therein. I then twist the return bend superheater tube, and the thin strip C together, so that steam passing through the tube B ing motion which will generate sufficient centrifugal force to cause entrained particles of water to contact with the walls of the heated tube, thus thoroughly intermixing all particles of steam, and breaking up all tendency to form cores of moist steam in the center of the column of steam pass? ing through the heater.
The twistedreturn bend tubes and the strip of metal C,.as shown in Fig. 1, guide the products of combustion in a spiral course will be given a whirlthrough the tube A', thereby producing a scouring action which cleanses the fire-tubes. The twisted tubes B and plate C also act to prevent back draft from the smoke-box through the fire-tubes. The twisted strip 0 causes the hot gas to be thoroughly mixed so that it will be of the same temperature in the lower portion of the tube A as in the upper portion,'thus preventing stratification of the products of combustion.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention so that others can utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v A steam superheater including a fire-tube of a boiler, a superheating unit comprising a flat spiral strip of metal adapted to guide the fire gas in a spiral course through said tube, and a return-bend tube having the arms thereof wrapped around the spiral of. said metal strip to give the steam passing therethrough a whirling motion, and whereby the fire gas is caused to follow parallel with said tubes. I In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 4
EDWARD-A. GEOGHEGAN.
