Description
Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
UNITED STATES IRENE MALLOY, F FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
LADYS GOMBINATI O'N HAT.
Application filed November 12, 1921. Serial No. 514,442.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that .I, IRENE MALLOY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Combination Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an improved ladys combination hat adapted primarily for automobile riding and provided with a folding protector de vice normally adapted to be folded around the rim and the crown of the hat to add to the attractiveness thereof.
It is an object of this invention to provide a combination shopping and automobile touring hat having a collapsible shield adapted to be dropped around theback of a persons head and overlapped beneath the persons chin.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hat wherein a protective shield when in normal position is folded around the 30 rear portion of the hat rim with the lining exposed and is furthermore engaged around the crown of the hat with the lining concealed, thereby producing an artistic effect, giving the hat the appearance of an attractive walking or shopping hat.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a ladys hat of simple and attractive design having a protective folded shield which ordinarily forms a part of the hat trimming, but when desired may be unfastened and lowered to serve as a protection for the person wearing the hat.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hat with the shield folded.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the hat showing the unfolding operation in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the hat with the shield dropped and fastened around the neck and under the chin of the person wearing the hat.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on line H of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view taken on line 55 of Figure 8.
As shown onthe drawings:
The reference numeral 1 indicates a ladys head on which a hat, embodying the principles of this invention, is worn. The combination hat comprises a crown 2 having a wired rim 3 secured thereto. The crown and rim may be made of any desired material and color. If preferred the rim 3 may be stiffened by materials otherthan wire.
Attached to the inside of the rear and rear side portions of the crown 2 is a protective shield made of the same material with. which the crown and rim are covered, but not necessarily so. The shield may, if desired, be provided with a lining of any desired material and color. The shield comprises a hood portion 5 having integral tapering extensions or straps 6, each provided with a button 7 and a loop of elastic 8 at the end thereof. Attached to the outside of one side of thehood portion 5 is a button 9. Another button 10 is secured to the inside of the opposite side of the hood portion 5. Two buttons 11 are secured upon the hat rim 3 on opposite sides of the front portion thereof.
The operation is as follows:
Normally the flexible shield 5 is in its folded position as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 wherein the shield is turned up around the rear portion of the rim 8. The remainder of the shield is folded on itself around the hat crown 2 with the straps 6 overlapping one another to permit the elastic loops 8 to engage over the rim buttons 11, and with the strap buttons 7 exposed at the front of the hat to add to the attractiveness of the hat. The shield button 9 is also exposed on one side of the hat while the shield button 10 is hidden on the opposite side of the hat. With the shield in folded position it affords part of the trimming of the hat and adds to the effectiveness of the design. The hat may be used as a walking or shopping hat and does not have the appearance of a combination hat with a protective shield.
When the hat is worn for automobiling llU and it is desired to protect the rear of the head and the throat, the shield is released by simply removing the elastic loops 8 from the rim buttons 11. The released ends or the shield are then thrown back as indicated by the dotted lines of Figure 2. The shield may now be dropped below the rim around the back portion of the head or a person wearing the hat. The straps 6 are brought forward beneath'the persons chin and overlapped. One of the elastic loops 8 engaged on the inner shield button 10 While the other loop 8 is engaged on the outer shield button 9 as illustrated injFignre-s 3 and 5. i
It will of course be understood that the hat and shield may be made of any desired kind'of material and may be lined or not as desired. The hat rim and crown may be decorated with trimmings if preferred or left simple and attractive as illustrated.
I am aware that numerous details of my invention may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of thisinvention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim 'as my invention:
'1. A hat comprising a crown, a horizontally'extending brim secured thereto, buttons on said brim, a shield secured in said crown, strap extensions forming a part of said shield, loop members attached to said strap extensions, and buttons secured to said shield adapted to be engaged by said loop members to hold the shield and said extensions secured around the neck of a person wearing the hat, said shield adapted when unbuttoned to be turned up around said brim and then folded and engaged around the hat crown with said straps overlapping and the loop members engaged with the brim but tons.
in bat comprising a. crown, a horizontally extending brim secured thereto, buttons on said brim, a shield secured in said crown, strap extensions integral with said shield, buttons on said strap extensions, loop members also secured to said strap extension" said shield adapted to be turned up ozer the brimand folded to engage around said crown with the strap extensions overlapping to permit said loop members to be cnga x on said rim buttons, a
butt-on on the exterior or said shield, and a bton on the interior oi said shield to pein t the shield when lowered to have the loop members engaged on'said shield buttons when the strap e:1- tensions are overlapped one with the o In testimony whereof I have hereunto scribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
