(Cl. 2-172) The present invention relates to improvements in womens head coverings, and more particularly to the so-called snood type of head scarf such as is worn popularly at resort areas for protection of womens coilfures from climatic or weather circumstances, including detrimental efie'cts of wind, sun, rain, and other weather circumstances,

The invention has for one of its objects to provide a detachable head scarf which may be detachably secured to a beach hat, such as a straw beach hat, the scarf fitting closely to the head, face and chin of the wearer, the ends of the scarf when being worn cross under the chin of the wearer and are brought backwards to the rear where they are tied, the loose ends being thereby out of the way so that the wearers hair is covered in its entirety.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hat with a detachable head scarf and detachable matching hat band, to be coordinated with a blouse or swimsuit.

Further objects of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds, and the features of novelty will be pointed out in particularity in the appended claim.

In connection with'the'prese'nt'invention it may be noted that many snood type head scarfs have been known for a considerable period of time and such have been sold widely, especially at resort areas. However, so far as is known, such scarfs always have been sewed into the hat, so that, so far as is known the present invention provides the first detachable unit, whereby stores can match hats to items of womens wearing apparel such as swimwear, sportswear and dresses simply by attaching the coordinating or matching scarf to the hat which contains the gripper hat-band. In accordance with the instant invention, a feature of novelty is the combination of a wide, detachable hat-band with a detachable head scarf which matches the hat-band, and also with a cotton print swimsuit or play coordinates, which may be supplied and sold as a matching unit assembly. Both the hat band and the scarf may be removed from the hat and other prints or designs substituted as desired.

The invention may be understood more readily from the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a typical example of a structurally detailed embodiment of the invention, and in which FIG. 1 represents a plan view of the improved head scarf detached from a hat-band and in opened out or spaced position;

FIG. 2 is an open plan view of a hat band to be used with the detachable scarf of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the scarf and hat band in wearing position on the head of a wearer;

FIG. 4 is a front view with the hat and hat band being shown in section and with the scarf in wearing position attached to the inside of the hat and to the hat band.

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view through a portion of a hat and hat band with a removable scarf embodying the features of the present invention removably attached to an inner or gripper sweat band secured interiorly in the crown of the hat adjacent to the brim, the view showing structural details through one of the separable fastening means for removably attaching the scarf to the hat crown.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, which disclose a preferred illustrative embodiment of the improved scarf construction of the instant invention, and with par- 7 'ticular reference to FIG. 1, numeral 1 represents the main body portion of the scarf, from which extend spaced side elements 2 and 3, integral with the main body portion 1 and constituting a continuation thereof. It will be noted that the side elements 2 and 3 may be defined as lateral flaps, and that they are widest at their upper portion which merge with body portion 1, the flaps 2 and 3 convergingly tapering from their widest portions to their tips. The main body portion 1 is adapted to completely cover and enclose the back of the wearers head and to fit snugly against the back of the wearers head when the side flap elements 2 and 3 are passed beneath the wearers chin and the ends thereof tied together at the back of the wearers neck, these side strips 2 and 3 covering and enclosing the sides of the head and face of the wearer, and being of sufficient length to be crossed beneath the chin of the wearer and to be brought to the back of the neck of the wearer and then tied together there resulting in a snug and complete covering for the back and sides of a wearers head and face as is indicated by FIGS. 3 and 4 of the drawings.

A principal feature of the instant invention is the making of the scarf to be attached removably to an inner annular gripper sweat band secured to the interior of the crown of the hat adjacent to the hat brim. For enabling this detachable engagement of a given scarf so that it may be removably interchanged with another scarf of similar construction but presenting adiiferent selected design or color, the scarf body 1 is provided with a top edge binding 4, which in practice preferably is of double thickness. When the scarf is detached" it is substantially V sliaped the sides of which V diverge to the opposite ends of the body 1 from which the end flap elements 2 and 3 dependingly extend. The provision of double thickness of the edge binding 4 provides sufficient body for defining an adequately stable retention mounting for male elements 5 of a plurality of substantially equally spaced snap fasteners, one of which if positioned at the apex of the aforesaid V-shaped binding, as is designated at 5' forms a median fastening element. A removable hat band 6 which is selected to match the scarf 1, encircles the crown 7 of a beach or straw hat 8 adjacent to its wide brim 8' thereof, as is shown on the drawings. The removable hat band 6 matches the scarf 1 and exteriorly encircles the crown 7 of the hat 8 adjacent to the brim, and is held in place on the hat crown 7 by a removable hat pin 9.

The interior of the crown 7 is provided in its lower portion adjacent to the juncture of the crown and brim with an encircling gripper sweat band 10, which as is shown on FIG. 5 of the drawings, is doubled in thickness into an approximate U-shape, the outer side 10' of which is attached to the interior of the crown 7, while the inner side 1d" has secured therein equally spaced female elements 11 of a plurality of snap fasteners, corresponding to and being complemental with the male snap fastener elements 5 mounted in the edge binder portion 4 of the scarf 1. This arrangement permits the head scarf 1 to be attached readily to, and detached from the gripper or sweat band 10 for interchangeable replacement with another scarf of similar structural shape but having a diiferent selected color or design, which when desired may be matched by replacing the hat band 6 with another hat band matching with the replacing scarf in color or design, or both, as may be desired to coordinate with the scarf.

It will be noted from the drawings with particular reference to FIG. 1 that the top edge binding 4 of the scarf has a V-shaped configuration, the sides of which diverge to the opposite ends or sides of the scarf, and the side flap portion 2 and 3 define a parabolic curve with the body 1 of the scarf. The V-shaped configuration of the top edge binding 4 of the scarf straightens out when the scarf is' applied to the gripper band 10 in the crown of the hat as is indicated by FIG. 4, while the radius of the curve connecting the depending lateral flaps 2 and 3 is sufficiently long to enable the lateral flaps 2 and 3 to be crossed beneath the wearers chin and tied at the back of the neck, as shown in FIG. 2 so that the ends thereof will be out of the way when the scarf is secured in wearing position. The detachable hat band 6 circles the crown 7 of the hat 8 and the hat pin 9 removably fastens the hat band 6 to the crown 7 of the hat as well as holding the hat on the head of the wearer. Removal of the hat pin 9 enables the detachment of the hat band 6 for replacement with another hat band to match another scarf selected to replace the former scarf.

In the appended claim, the term design is intended to include color as well as design configurations printed on the hat bands and scarfs.

It becomes evident from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings that while a preferred illustrative embodiment of the structural features of the instant invention is described and illustrated therein, details of the specifically illustrated embodiment may be modified as may become apparent to one skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and substance of the invention, as may be found to be desirable, and therefore, it will be understood that it is intended and desired to embrace within the scope of the invention such modifications and changes as may be necessary or desirable to adapt it to varying conditions and uses as defined by the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what I desire protected by Letters Patent is as set forth in the following claim.

I claim:

As an article of manufacture, a snood adapted to be detachably secured to the crown of a hat, said snood being generally V-shaped, the end edge portion of the apical portion being attachable to a hat crown with said apical portion forming the main body portion for covering the hair at the back and sides of the head of the wearer and the legs of the V forming depending flaps of a length to extend downwardly over the wearers ears and to be secured together under the chin of the wearer. toretain the hat on the wearers head and protect the wearers coiifure, and fastening means on the end edge portion of said apical portion adapted to be secured to complemental fastening means on the hat, the apical portion being of a width to extend around the back and sides of the wearers head and said end edge portion formed with opposite side portions converging inwardly to conform to the hat crown with the inner edge of the V being curved to snugly fit the sides and back of the wearers neck and conforming said main body portion to snugly cover the wearers coiffure and ears for protection against air currents.
