Be it known that we, JOHNDRAPEAU and ADoLPHUs DRAPEAU, citizens of the United States, residing at River Rouge, in the.

5 county of Wayne and-State of Michigan,

have lnvented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco Pipes, of which the folliability of saliva finding its way th ough,

a stem to a. pipe bowl and giving rise to the objectionable condition-which exists when the tobacco in the bowl is rendered moist by saliva.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of a tobacco pipe constructed according to our invention.

Figure 2 is a section taken through the bowl of the pipe in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is an inverted plan view showing integral with the said shank 3 without af fecting our invention. The stem 1 and shank 3 are provided with the usual coincidentbores 5 and 6 as illustrated.

In accordance with one part of our invention'the bowl 4 is provided in its bottom with a central openin lined by an approriate bushing 7 as il ustrated. J ournaled 1n the said lined aperture is a short shaft 7 on which are fixed three (more or less) the handlein normal position and adapted cleaning or scraping blades 7 which are formed of spring steel or other appropriate material and are opposed, to and movable agamst the wall of the bowl 4: at the bottom and side thereof. The lower exterior portion of the bowl is recessed at 8 and in the .said recess is removably housed a handle 9 which is hingedly connected at 10 to the shaft 7. The handle 9 is adapted to swing into the recess 8 so as to normallyafford no projection from the pipe. When, however, it is desired to clean or scrape the bottom and side of the interior of the'bowl 4: it is simply necessary to swing the handle 9 down into alinement with the shaft '7 when through the medium, of the widened end portion of the'handle 9, the shaft 7 may be turned strongly about its axis when as will be readily observed the blades on the shaft 7 a will be moved in the bowl and against the bottom and side thereof to remove ashes and other dbris which can be readily dumped from the bowl, thereby obviating the necessity of beating the bowl or using amatch, penknife or the like to displace ashes from the bowl. improvement obviates thelikelihood of the bowl becoming too thickly caked. After cleaning of the bowl in the manner described the handle 9 may be housed in the recess 8 of the pipe.

The Wide free end portion of the handle 9 is advantageous because it affords an adequate hold for thumb and fore finger, and the wide handle is also advantageous because when knurled at its outer side as designated by 10 in Figure 3, the handle 9 constitutes an advantageous match scratcher.

In accordance with another part of our invention, the rear portion of the stem 1 is reduced at 12 to receive a cap-like mouth piece 13 in the lower portion of the outer end of which is formed an aperture 14. Also a chamber 15 is formed in the stem 1 at the rear end of the 'bore 5. In the rear end of thesaid chamber is a flanged bushing 16, and extending through the bore ofthe said bushing is a rod 17 smaller than said bore. At its rear end the said rod 17 is provided with a closure disk 18 and on the forward portion of the rod is an enlargement It will also be noted that our 19, between which and the bushing16 is intel-posed a spring 20 which serves to yieldingly hold the disk 18 against the outer end of the plug 16 so as to close the bore therein and the downwardly inclined mouth at the outer end of said bore. The spring moved valve 18 will manifestly open when smoke is drawn through the stem but will promptly close after each draft with the result that saliva will be prevented from reaching and passing through the bore in the stem. This result is also contributed to by the arrangement of the aperture 14 in the lower portion of the end of the cap 13.

\Vc have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of our invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. WVe do not desire, however, to be understood as confining ourselves to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of our invention as defined in our appended claims.

Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a tobacco pipe, the combination of a bowl having an opening in its bottom and also having a recess in its underside in communication with said opening, a shaft journaled in the said opening, bowl cleaning means carried by the said shaft, and a handle hingedly connected to the shaft and swingable intoand out of said recess.

2. In a tobacco pipe, the combination of a bowl having an opening in its bottom and also having a recess in its underside in communication with said opening, a shaft journaled in the said opening, bowl cleaning means carried by the said shaft, and a handle hingedly connected to the shaft and swingable into and out of said recess; the said handle having a rough outer surface adapted to serve as a match scratcher when the handle is disposed in said recess.
