To all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, JOHN AUs'rIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva,
- in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Pipe, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes and one of its objects is to provide a device of this character having means whereby hot air accumulating at the point of connection between the bottom of the bowl and the passage in the stem may escape through the wall of the bowl.
A further object is to provide a device of this character having means for regulating the flow of air into the stem.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim,
it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a pipe embodying the present improvements.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bowl thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, of the bowl having a modified form of damper.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the stem and 2 the bowl of a tobacco pipe. A passage 3 is formed in the wall of the bowl and extends from the upper edge thereof to the passage 4 formed in the stem, the two passages meet ing at a point close to the interior of the bowl.

the plate is adapted, when the plate is in housed position, to close the passage 3. An ear 8 projects from the outer edge of the damper and has its opposed edges recessed to form points 9. Either of the recesses is adapted to receive the edge of a fingernail whereby the damper can be swungreadily' out of the recess to open the passage 3.
Instead of providing the particular damper described, a damper in the form of a strip 10 can be pivotally mounted on the edge of the bowl, as shown at 11 in Fig. 3. It will be understood that while the pipe is in use a partial vacuum will be produced in the passage 3. Consequently the atmospheric pressure will cause fresh air to flow into said passage with the result that the smoking of the pipe will be rendered more enjoyable and the bowl will be kept dry and nearly odorless.
While the dampers or cut-offs 6 and 10 can be utilized for regulating the flow of fresh air into the passage 3, they are useful as means'for preventing dirt and other foreign substances from entering the passage 3 and choking it.
What is claimed is A tobacco pipe including a stem having a passage therein, a bowl opening into the passage and having an air passage in the wall thereof opening at one end into the passage in the stern and at its other end through the top of the bowl, there being a slot extending partly through the wall of the bowl and intersecting the passage in said bowl, a damper pivotally mounted in the slot and normally filling the same, said damper being movable to open or close the passage in the bowl, and a projection on the narrow portion of the damper and extending beyond the wall of the bowl, said projection having opposed finger nail receiving recesses.
