Original application filed April' 18, 1922, Serial No. 554,807. Divided and this application filed January' 7, 1924. SeriallNo. 684,822.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it l-nown that l, JOHN Y, lioenirrson, a citizen of the United Siatearesiding at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and Sta-te of Texas, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Casters, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates generally to casters, and the present application is a division of my prior application, Serial No. 554,807, filed April 18,1922. The primary object of the present invention is to provide a caster which shall` be of simple construction, strong and durable, and reliable and etlicient in use.
A further `object of the'present invention is to provide a caster which is assembled in such manner that the parts thereof, while permitting free movement at all times, can not become disordered or deranged and which are properly maintained within the supporting ferrule.
With these and other objects'in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference lbeing had to the accompanying drawing, in which-:-
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through a caster constructed in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional' view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, Y
Figure. 3 is a top `pla-n view of the caster,` and Figure et is a fragmentary perspective view of the caster barrel.
t is to be understood that .the claims of the present application are directed to the caster construction per se, while the-claims of application No. 554,807 are directed to a easter embodying a novel type of insect guard.
Referring now moreV particularly to the drawing, 5 represents ya ferrule or body to be fitted to the leg of the furniture to be equipped therewith, and this ferrule may be polygonal in cross-section, circular or oval to correspond with the shape of the leg to which it is to be applied. This ferrule may be formed of any suitable material, and may be either enclosed in a channel or opening in from the lower end thereof and being substantially coextensive with the said ferrule. This recess snugly accommodates an outer barrel indicated at 8, and this outer1 barrel has nested therein an inner barrel or sleeve 9. The sleeveor inner barrel is of less length than the outer barrel, and engages at its upper end with a shoulder 10 formed in the inner circumference of the said outer barrel. The sleeve 9 at its lower end carries an annulu-s 11 disposed at right angles to the said sleeve. In the use of the device as an insect-proof caster, there will be formed integral with this annulus, at the outerextremities of the latter, a cu 3. 12. The cup 12 lies almost entirely below the plane of the annulus 11 and is formed "i byv bending thev metal of which the annulus is formed downwardly and in substantially circular shape in cross-section and upward-4 ly so that the outer edge'of ,the said metal terminates ina V.plane substantially even with the plane of the said annulus.`- The free edge of cupi` 12 is spaced from the outer edge of the annulus a distance sufiicient to enable an insecticide in the form of -a powder or liquid to be introducedv to the -cup and held thereby, and this gap causes any verminupon the exterior of the cup to enter the-later in an attempt to obtain a footing or hold upon either the annulus kor the ferrule 5. This insect cup or guard feature constitutes the subject-matter of my original application tiled April 18, 1922, Serial No. 554,807.` The caster includes the wheel supporting bracket 13 carrying a Wheel 14; formed of. any suitable material and mounted in any Isuitable manner, and a stem 15 projects upwardly from this bracket and fits snugly within the nested ferrules 8 and 9. The stem protrudes at its upper end above the yupper extremity of ferrule 8 and is provided with a transverse openingto receive a cotter ain or other securing eleinent indicated at 16, this pin confining a Washer 17 between itselt and the adjacent end of the errule B.
A disk 18 is carried by the upper end ot' bracket 13 and rests upon the latter, and is provided on its upper surface Aand near its outer edge with an annular groove to receive the anti-'friction balls 19, While the under surface ol the annulns 11 directly overlying the groove of the disk is sin'rilarly grooved, the grooves 01".' the disk and annul-ns, constitu-ting het-Ween theni a recess 'fori the balls 19.
By constructing` 'the device in this inanner it is apparent that the several parts' of which the easter is` Jorined Will he securely held together Vand maintained against disorganization. tterrules or sleeves 84H9 are properly assembled the stem of. the easter is inserted through the loner end of the sleeve 9, the
balls 19' having' previously been properly positioned upon the disk 18 and in the groove*r thereof. After the Washer and cotter pins 17-16 havey been properly applied tothe upper end of the stein, these parts o't the device will` be firmly secured together, yet the caster bracket is at all times free 'for relative movement. By extending` the inner 'errnle outv sleeve l upwardly in the manner indieeted,.V dangerl oli. the insecticide or vermin repellent gaining aceeissto the' interior of: the easter is entirelyl obviated., The cup which. .contains this fluid or powder is so" locatedV that' vermin in crawling up the casteriinnst enter the cup in order to obtain a footing or hold nponthat' part et` the caster construction. which is however, it will bei understood that the in vent-ive` charac'teristicsl may with facilitybe carried out in connection ,vitlr caster struc,- turesol' various shapes, forms, sizes and types, and While' the aboveL isv a' description of the invention inl its preferred e1nbodiment, it will be understood that variousy changes in the minor detailsotconstru'ct/'iion and arrangement of parts may be made,
After the outer and inner Without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
Han/'ing thus nlly described my invenA tion, I claim zln a device or' the cli (hscribed. a terrine, a barrel ar anged Within said lerrule,` the. said barrel beingl ot larger (li-(mieter near its loiver end and providii g a shoulder at the juncture of the larger Vwith the smaller diameters, a sleeve fitting' in the lan said shoulder, an annulns at the lovvcr end ot said sleeve, a stein extending through said sleeve and barrel and secured the1 inl` a disk held by said: stern, and anti-friction balls interposed between said disk and said annulus.
2. In a device of the class described, a
lierrnlle having a recess therein, a barrel disposed within and substantially coextensive with said recess, the said barrel being; of 'enlarged diameter vnear its` lower end, shoulder at the junctureA of the larger and smaller diameters otl said barrel, a sleevel fitting within the larger bore of said arrel and abutting' said shoulder, an annnlns at the outer end of said sleeve, a' caster stem entering said sleeve and passing entirelyv through said barrel, a disk carried by said sternand lying' bek-ni1 said annulus, cooperating; `grooves on' said annulns and disk providing` zr ball recess, anti-friction balls' in said' recess, and a Cotter pin maintaining said stein assembled Within' said barrel.
3. In a device of the described, a barrel having' its' bore enlarged from the middle portion thereof oir to an end and the iva-lis of said.' enlarged portion cli-verging toward the 'extremity oliV the barrel, a shoulder ati the juncture of the enlarged with the smaller portions ol the bore; a sleeve in said barrel having` .its inner end engaged with said shoulder andA of the saine diameter as the smaller portion of said bore, the saidi sleeve flared ton-'ard its outer end and lying snugly against the Walls of said larger' bore', a easter stern extending through the nested sleeve and barrel, means for curing salidf sterntlrerein, and anti-friction members interposed between' said easter and the' lolvver portion ot' said sleeve.
In testimony whereof 1 allix niy gnature in presence olftwo Witnesses.
