UNITED STATES EMIL RINDERS?ACHER, OF BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA.
ELECTRIC LIGHTER FOR CIGARS AND CIGABETTES.
Application filed March 15, 1920.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EMIL RINDERSPACHER, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at ealle Maipii 671, Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic, have invented an Improvement in an Electric Lighter for Cigars and Cigarettes, of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to an improved elec tric lighter for cigars and cigarettes, wherein lighting is obtained by means of the electric current used for general lighting.
its will hereinafter be seen, this electric lighting device is most simple and of small dimensions. It is connected to the line circuit by means of an ordinary socket and if desired, may be specially constructed tor any voltage. The device conveniently atlects the shape or" a simple handle, the material and outer ornamental design of which may be varied in many ways. In the interior of the device is suitably arranged an ordinary resistance, according to the voltage of the cur rent into which the lighting device is to be inserted and the amplitude of the voltaic are to be obtained for lighting. Said resistance is connected to two terminals, one of which is formed with a movable part adapted to be moved by means of a projecting stud or button towards or from the end of the other terminals, whereby a voltaic are is formed and maintained all the time required for lighting a cigarette, cigar or the like.
For the better understanding of this description, illustrative drawings have been annexed to this specification in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective of an electric lighting device constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, on the line AB of Figure 1.
In said drawings, 1 indicates the hollow handle in the interior of which is placed the resistance 2, conveniently connected to the leads 3 and 4. Each end of the resistance is secured in the respective terminals 5 and 6. The studs of these terminals pass through Serial No. 365,695.
a partition 7 and project beyond the opposite part, so as to form the terminals 8 a nd 9.
The terminal 9 is carried on a movable extension 10, jointed to the terminal 6 and submitted to the expansive action of a spring 11, being adapted to be operated at will by means of an external button 12 whoseshank passes through a perforation 13 formed in the partition, 7.
The part containing the terminals is enclosed within a casing 14, formed with a central bore or opening for allowing lighting of cigars or cigarettes.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a compact handle is provided consistii'ig of a chamber for the resistance and a chamber tor the terminals 8 and 9, the two chambers being separated by a partition or cover 7 serving, in the present example, as a mounting for the terminal studs 5 and 6."
Supposing the lighter to be connected to the line circuit, the same will operate in the following manner: The device being arranged as shown in Figure 2, it will be seen that the separation of the terminals ,8 and 9 is too great to maintain the voltaic are, so that in this case the device will be extinguished. iVhen by pressing the button 12, the terminal 9 is pushed into contact with the terminal 8 and then slightly withdrawn therefrom, the voltaic are will be formed, the spark of which is used through the bore of the casing 14: for lighting the cigars or cigarettes.
When releasing the button 12, this latter is carried by the spring 11 to its initial position, so that the are will become extinguished.
It will be evident that in the construction of the device, the isolating and refractory materials therefor will suitably be chosen so as to assure a long duration of the lighter and avoid any risk of shock or contact to the user.
I now declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An electric lighter forcigars, cigarettes and the like comprising a casing constituting a handle having a resistance chamber iii " and a terminal chamber, the latter being provided With an opening at the end of said handle, adapted to receive the end of the article to be lighted, a partition separating said chambers, terminal studs mounted in said partition With their terminals enclosed Within said terminal chamber adjacent to and directed toward said end opening and means operable from the exterior of said casing to eiiect relative movement between 10 the terminals of said studs whereby a voltaic arc may be formed at said opening.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
