Description

Patented Mar. 31, 1925.
UNITED STATES,
" FRANK rn'nnne, or OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR PREVENTING THE WASTE F TOBACCO IN SMOKING PIPES OR THE LIKE.
Application filed June 6, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK TEBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Device for Preventing the WVaste of Tobacco in Smoking Pipes or the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for preventing the undue waste of tobacco particularly in connection with smoking pipes.
An object of the invention is to providea device of the character described which can be readily adjusted so as to readily fit in the desired position inthe bowl of the pipe. Another object of the invention is to pro vide the device with inobtrusive integral means for enabling the device to be readily removed from the pipe.
A further object is to provide a device of the character described which is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adapt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claim.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the device of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a smoking pipe showing my device in operative position.
It is well known that there is considerable tobacco wasted in pipe smoking. This waste is primarily due to the mixture of saliva with the tobacco at the base of the bowl of the pipe. The wet tobacco swells, becomes unfit for smoking purposes, and clogs up the smoke passage leading to the mouthpiece. The removal of the moist tobacco thus becomes imperative at frequent intervals,
thereby occasioning an undue waste. In accordance with my invention the foregoing disadvantageous features are eliminated, and the smoker is thus spared the annoy- Serial No. 475,201.
ances attending the continual removal an cleaning of the wet tobacco.
As shown in the present embodiment of the invention the device comprises a single piece member 2 preferably formed of metal and having a perforatedreceptacle 3 which is adapted to be positioned in the bowl 4 of the pipe 5, so as to hold the tobacco spaced from the bottom of the bowl. The receptacle is preferably positioned in the bowl at a point immediately above the smoke passage which usually leads from the base 8 of the bowl through the pipe-stem 9.- In this mannor the tobacco is prevented from filling the base where the saliva usually collects, thereby preventing the deleterious intermixture of the two as well as the consequent clogging of the passage 7. The receptacle 3 is preferably dished, and is formed with open slots 11 at its edges, which define a plurality of segmental walls 12. The material of which the receptacle is formed is preferably of a flexible nature so that the walls 12 may be bent adjacent their base.
In this manner the diameter of the receptacle may be varied thereby enabling the latter to be set down into the bowl to frictionally engage the tapering sides 13 thereof and thus be supported at any point desired.
Means are provided for enabling the receptacle to be readily removed whenever desirable-such as when the burnt products therein become hardened. Extending from one of the segments 12is an arm 14 which is adapted to lie flat against the sides 13 of the bowl and proj ect above the top thereof. The free end 16 of the arm is preferably bent over the top face 17 of the bowl after the receptacle is placed in desired position,
thereby enabling the arm to function as an additional support for the receptacle. To now remove the receptacle it is merely necessary to insert the fingernail under the end 16 of the arm and then raise the arm until the receptacle is withdrawn.
I claim:
In a device for preventing the waste of tobacco in smoking pipes and the like, a removable one-piece member comprising a perforated receptacle adapted to be positioned within the bowl at a point adjacent the bottom thereof and above the smoke passage leading therefrom and being provided with sections arranged to be flexed to frictionally In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set engage the adjacent Walls of the bowl, and m hand at Oakland, Calif., this 31st day of an arm extending from said receptacle ay, 1921. adapted to lie against said walls'of the bowl I 1 .5 and having its free end arranged to be bent v FRANK TEBERG.
whereby it may rest against the top face of In presence of the bowl. 7 g L. L. M. SALSBURY.
