UNITED STATES JOHN EDWARD RUSSELL, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAME.
Application filed January 25, 1924. Serial No. 688,531.
To all whom it may coneera:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. RUssncnL, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description-of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention aims to provide a'simple and inexpensive, yet a highly amusing game embodying aball-receiver int-o which balls of celluloid or other suitable material are tossed, provision being made whereby the balls will descend from the receiver and roll onto separate playing fields. It is intended that the fields shall have independent colors and that the balls shall be correspondingly colored, so that when a ball of one color reaches a field of the same color, a score is made. Instead of using colors, letters, num bers or other means may be provided to identify the balls with the fields.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide novel means for discharging the balls from the fields and conducting'them to a common point. I I
VVit-h the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the game constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is a central vertical sectional view.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the balLrecc-iver showing a slightly different form of construction.
Figiire 5 is a vertical section on of Fig. 4..
Figure 6 is a detail horizontal section on line (3-6 of Fig. 4.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the numeral 1 designates a flat, inclined board suitably supported upon an appropriate base 2, said board having a convex lower edge provided with a front wall 3. From this wall, a plurality of partition walls 4: converge upwardly along the upper side of the board 1 and segregate the l t r int-0 a p ur lity of s para e fields line 5-5 which may be designated by different colors, by numbers, by letters as indicated in Fig. 2, or in any other desired manner, it being sufficient that the fields are separately designated and that the balls 5 used in playing the game (Fig. 2) be similarlydesignated,'
so that when any. ball rolls upon its corresponding field, a score may be registered for the person using said ball.
Rising from the rear end of the board 1,
are a number of vertical passage members 6, support a ball-receiver 7 which is pref erably four-sided and of substantially funnel-shape. The rear side wall of this receiver is faceted as indicated at 8, so that when the ballsare thrown against the facets, they will bounce in numerous directions before descending from the receiver through one of the passage members 6. The facets 8 do not extend entirely to the lower end of the back wall of the receiver 7, and saidlower end of this wall, as well as the lower ends of the other walls are preferably of slightly less incline than the major portions of said walls, as indicated at 9, providing additional bouncing surfaces for the balls. Suitable braces 11 may be provided for the receiver 7, oneof these braces being shdwn connected with the portion 9 of the back wall of said receiver, while the other is connected with said back wall at a higher point, the lower ends of both braces being secured to the base '2. I
I prefer to provide the front wall 3, with ball outlets 12 from the individual fields, and gates 13 are employed to normally close these outlets. In the present showing, thegates 13 are all carried by a resilient wire 14L which extends along the front wall 3 and is rotatably mounted in appropriatebearings 15, one end of said wire having an appropriate handle 16, by means of which it may be turned to simultaneously open or close all of the gates 13. A trough 17 has been shown in front of the wall 3 to receive the balls from the openings 12, when the te 13 are p n d and the beam of his
