LOCKER V Application "filed m 23,
To all cchom'z't'ma yconce'mr Be it known that I,WALTER N. VANCE, a.
citizen of the United States, residing in- Chicago Heights, in the county of'Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a .new'a'nd useful Improvement Lockers," off which 'the following is a specification; n v This invention relates in generaljto lockers and similar construction, and has more particular reference to. the locking arrangement V w I The invention has for its object broadly the provisionfof a keeperlfor' receiving a padlock for lockingthe door' closed, and which will be of simpleconstruction readily assembledjinto permanent relation with the door through the minimum n'u'n iber of as- 'sel'nblingoperations. V I 7 fAnother object 'oftheinvention is the pro vision of a keeper and handlelock ofsturdy, durable construction which will require minimum perforation of-the door. "Another importantobject of the invention is the provision of a construction of: the character mentioned of pleasing appearance. Numerous I other obj ectsandiadvantages of the invention will beapparent as it is better understood from thefollowing description, which, takeninconnection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred em bodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings Y Figure 1 isa' perspective view of a locker in which my present invention is embodied; Fig. 2 is a .seotionlongitudinally thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken sub-' stantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; 7
gigs. 5 and 6 are detail perspectivewiews; Fig. 7fis a section taken just in advance of the keeper with the handle removed.
For the purpose of illustrating my inventionIhave shown on the drawing a locker 11 of any usual or preferred construction, having amanipulative handle 12 adapted to be locked against opening, by an ordinary. padlock13. The handle 12 is provided in the present instance withtwo lugs 14 and 15 adapted to extend through slots 16 and 17 in the locker door and into engagement with a latch bar 18 having a number'of offset wedgeteeth 19 adapted to engage in latch notches 21 of latch members22 fastened to 1921 Serial No. 471.762.
the door frame and adapted, to embrace the flange 28'0f the door. The'lower end 24- of the handle is flattened and it is this flattened end that carries the lock 15. This flattened en'd'isad'apted to move into and out of a keeper 25 shown in perspective in: Fig. 6.
This keeper ispreferably formed of a single sheet of metal bent to provid two triangular side wings 26 connected by a back Wall 27. 'At the bottom the ends or sides of the ,theshoulder 29 engages the edge 31. of the door material at the bottom of theslot, In
this position the flanges28 rest against the inner faceof the door. The l ree'per is locked in position by driving a'wedge or drift along 'the faceof'the doorand between the inner ends of the free edges 32 of the keeper.
This shears the material as indicated at 33 and swages out locks 34 over the outer face padlockanda similar opening 86 is provided in the "flattened tail 24 of thehan'dle. The
keeper is of general triangular form and the back Wall 27 may form a stop for the handle if desired. I g
It is thought that the invention and many sheet are bent outto form flanges 28which terminate short of theback wall forming a ay be inserted 1 of'its'attendant advantages will be under? stood from, the foregoing description, and it Wlll be apparent that various changes may be made 1n the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore merely apreferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. In a locker, the combination of a door having an aperture therein, a keeper disposed through the aperture from the rear, said keeper having a part engaging the inside of thedoor and a part swaged into interlocked relation from the front.
2. In a locker, the combination of an apertured door, a keeper having three integral sides and open at a fourth interlocked with said door and a movable member cooperating therewith. I
'3. In a locker, the combination of a door,
described being i a. handle movable vertically of the door, and a triangular keeper extending through said dooralid adapted to receive said handle.
4. In a locker, the combination of a door,
a handle movable vertically of the door,
and a aiangiaaisheetInetaI keePerextending through said door and adapted to reoeive said handle.
5. In a locker, the combination ofa door having an aperture, a triangular keeper thrust through said aperture, the endsflof said. keeper being fianged to engage the inner face of the door, the material of the keeper adjacent the door being s'ivaged to engage'the outer face of the door and a member adapted to move intosaid keeper.
6. In a lo cke'r,&the combination or a door having an aperture, a keeper having-a shoulder at one endand adapted toibedisposed .20 'through'the door to engage the shoulder and the outer "face of the door, the inner ends oflsaidkeepei" being flanged "to engage .the inner fa'ce of thedoor and the forward edge of the keeper being swagedito engage the outer face or the door.
7. III-*8, loeker the combination of a door provided with a slot, a keeper composed of asheet of metalbent' to triangular-form, :the
ed-ges atone side'b'eing bent out to provide 'door engaging flanges, the material of the keeper at the .other:free side ibeing -swaged outwardly over said flanges to lock the door rthereagai'nst and. amember adapted to move intosaid' keeper.
8. Ina locker, the-eombinationofa door provided with a slot, aikeeper eo-mposed of a sheet :of metal bent to triangular iform, the edgesmte one side being ibent onthtog'provide door engaging ,flangesgtheimaterial of the keeper at the other free side being 40 sheared and. bent outwardly over said flanges to'lo'ekthe door thereagainst and a member adapted to move into said keeper.
'9. In a loeker, thefoonibination olzadoor, a sliding'handle therefor, atriangrilar keeper into and out of which said handle is adapted to slide, said handle and keeper being perforated to receivea lock' 10. In a looker, the combination of a door, a sliding handle therefor, .a triangularikeeper into and out of which said handle is adapted to slide, saidkeep'er being-provided ivith a baek wall forming a stop for said handle movement.
1'1. A keeper adapted .to be attached ,-to 5: a door and oomposedof two wingsmxtending: outwardly from said door, said wings being of general triangular form conneoted a] ong the for w ard side.
12. A keeper adapted to be attaohed to a (1001 iITlClCOIIlPOSBd of a sheetgprovidingtwo 1 side wings ofgeneral I tri angulariform connected by a back wall along a triangular side of each side Wall.
.18. :A door havinga slot--therein,-a-zkeeper having parts extending through the vslot and locked against the doo1-',,and qakhandle movable into "and out of+said keeper and having a ,part extending vthrough :and slidablein said slot.
' 1'4. A door, having aslot therein, a trian- ..gular rkeeper Ihaving ,parts extending [through-the .slotand 1o ekednagainst thefdoor, andwa handle anovable into :androutsof. said #keeper-andxhavinga partextending-through 75 and isli'dable in rsaidvslot.
