To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ice-Cream Dippers, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to an ice cream dipper, the general object of the invention belng'to provide means for transferringice cream from a'large container to a carton, in which the ice cream is retailed.
Another object of the invention is to .insure the separation of the cream in the dipper fromthat in the container when the di or is being removed from the container. his invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrate .in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

In these views 1 indicates a casting which forms the body of the device and the top of the dipper, and 2 indicates a pair of side pieces which are of semi-circular shape and are riveted or otherwise secured to the casting. Each side piece is provided with an inwardly extending flange 3 which extends from the bottom of the s1de piece to a point adjacent the upper end thereof, the top of the flange being below the casting These flanges form diametrically arranged wings which act to separate the cream in the dip-' per, when the same has been forced into the cream in the container, from the bod of the cream in the container. tube 4 as one end connected with the casting 1 and has a small rod 5 passing through its upper part, this tube and rod acting as a handle for the dipper. The tube is slotted, as at 6. A plate 7 is arranged in the dip er andv acts to press the cream therefrom. his plate is connected with a rod 8 which passes through a hole in the casting into the tube 4 and a knob 9 is slidably mounted on the tube and is connected with the. rod by a pin 10 which passes through the knob, the rod and the slots 6 in the tube. Thus by moving the knob upon the tube the plate can be 'ad justed in the dipper. The'plate is rovided with 'notches 11 which receive the anges 3.
In using the. device it is pressed into the cream in the container by means of its handle, plate 7 being in the upper end of the dipper. When the dipper is full it is given a rotary movement so that the flanges 3 will act to separate the cream in the dipper from the main body of the cream and then the dipper with the cream therein is lifted out of the container and placed over or in the carton or other. receiver. Then by pressing upon the knob 9 the plate 7 will force the cream from the dipper.
Manifestly, in virtue .of the construction shown and described the semi-circular side pieces 2 of my improvement form a cylinder which is adapted to expand to a slight extent when hard ice cream is to be ejected from the dipper with the result that such expansion facilitates the ejection of the cream. That is, the ice cream may be dis charged from the dipper with less eflort than would otherwise be the case. Again the spaces between the opposed portions of the side pieces 2 constitute air exhausts when the plate 7 is forced up in the cylindrical portion of the dipper by ice cream with the result that the full occupation of the cylindrical portion of the dipper by ice cream is facilitated.
It will also be manifest that the forming of a flange 3 on one edge of each side piece 2, contributes to the strength and the inexpensiveness of the device while the flanges 3 are so disposed as not to interfere in any measure with the springing of the lower ends of the side pieces 2 away from and toward each other.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with ceiving portion comprising resilient separated sections, each rlgidly connected to and extending from the body.

In an ice cream dipper, the combination of an apertured bod a rod movable through the aperture of t e body, a piston carried by said rod, and an expansible creamreceiving portion comprising resilient separated sections containing said piston and each rigidly connected to and extending from the body.
3. In an ice cream dipper, the combina- .tion of an apertured body, a rod movable through the aperture of the body, a piston carried by said rod, and an expansible cream- -receiving portion comprising resilient separated sections contalning said piston and each rigidly connected to.and extending from the body; the piston being engaged and held against turning'by said sections.
4. In an ice cream dipper, a body, in combination with an expansible cream-receiving portion comprising resilient separated sections, each rrgidly connected to and extendin from the bod and each having on one of its longitudinal edges an inwardly extending flange projecting into the creamreceiving portion and opposed to the other section.
5. In an ice cream dipper, the combination with an apertured andcircular body, a rod movable through the a erture of the body, a piston carried b sai rod and having notches, a tubular handle fixed to the body and receiving said rod, and a knob exterior of and movable on the handle and connected to said rod,-of semi-circular side pieces arranged to form a cylinder, said side pieces having end extensions fixedly connected to the'body, and each having on one longitudinal edge an inwardly extending flange disposed in one notch of the presser and opposed to and separated throughout its length from the other section.
