A ril 29, 19m.v A, MARRA 2,24QM6 LIQUID GUN Filed Sept. 25, 1939 INVENTOR. ANTHONY MAIZRA BY waif-Z.
ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 29, I941 STATES PATENT OFFICE LIQUID GUN v Anthony Marra, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application September 25, 1939, Serial No. 296,341
(ci ar-v8) 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a liquid gun and particularly relates to a gun which may be utilized for ejecting and forcing plastic or viscous materials to a utilized.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide an improved, simple, inexpensive gun of the character above described which may be readily utilized and operated by hand, which is of few parts and which may be readily constructed and repaired.
In the usual type of guns now used, it is customary to have a long piston actuating rod which extends axially through the cylinder and which not only increases the length of the device and the difliculty of storage but also necessitates actuation of the ejector at a substantial distance away from the nozzle thereof.
It is among the objects of the present inven tion to provide an improved piston actuating device which may be utilized for guns of the character described and also for other purposes, which will be devoid of said elongated piston actuating members or of long threaded rods and which, at the same time, may be actuated closely adjacent the piston and the point of ejection of the fluid liquid or viscous solid from the nozzles of the gun.
Still further objects and advantages will appear from the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
In accomplishing the above objects it has been found, according to one embodiment of the invention, to provide a cylinder in which there is positioned a piston, said cylinder having at its outlet end a cap provided with a nozzle which may be connected thereto by a bayonet joint.
The piston in the preferred form is preferably operated by a pawl arrangement cooperating with a metal tape, said tape being designed to press the piston forwardly to form ejection of the plastic or viscous material through the nozzle thereof.
Preferably, this tape is caused to ride upon the cylinder and may be readily restored to its initial position by a pull member on the exterior of the gun.
The pawl may be most conveniently connected to a trigger member which by pressure against a fixed handle rigid with the body of the gun may be caused to press the piston forwardly.
place where they may be- It is to be understood that the tape which will be particularly described in connection with a gun may also be utilized in connection with other piston operated devices whether used for ejection guns or for other purposes.
Referring to the drawing which illustrates several of the various possible embodiments of the present invention, but to which the present invention is by no means restricted since the drawing is merely by way of illustration and not by way of limitation;
Figure 1 is a top view in partial section of the gun according to one embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 are respectively transverse sections upon the lines 33 and 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the trigger element removed from the gun.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4, the gun is provided with a barrel A, a cap B, a piston C, an actuating tape D and a pawl arrangement E.
r The cylinder A may be formed of a cylinder of sheet metal, as indicated at H), and the cap B may be connected to the end I I thereof by the pins I2 in said end I l and the right angular slots l3 in the flange M at the side of the cap.
The base of the cap I5 is provided with the tapered nozzle l6.
Positioned within the barrel A is the piston 0 having the base I1 and the side flanges 18. The tape D is attached to the base H by the angle member l9 having the rivets 20. The tape D is I provided with openings Zlto receive the upper end 22 of the pawl 23 of the arrangement E.
The end of the cylinder A is closed by the cup 24 having the side flanges 25 and having an opening 26 through which said tape D projects.
The tape D, as best shown in Figures 3 and 4, normally has a partial circular cross section with the downwardly turned edges 26a.
The rear of the cylinder is provided with an extension F forming a handle which overlaps the end of the cylinder at 21. The handle F may be made in two pieces connected by the lugs 28 and 29 and it may have a downwardly extending rear portion 30 also having lug connections 3| and 32.
Pivotally mounted in the sides 33 of the handle F is the Wheel 34 by the pivot rod 35, the tape D extending over said wheel 34 and through the slot 36 in the portion 3! of the handle F and inside of the guide element 38 to the pull mem ber 39.
The guide elements 38 consist of two elements then have the vertical portions 45 with the openings Q5 and '51.
The openings 45 receive the pivot pin 48: mounted in the side walls 43 and enclosed by'the bias the trigger 40 inthe coil springs 49 which direction 55 (see Figures 2 and 4). H i
The openings ll receive the pin 5! which serves as a pivot for the pawl ing encircled by the coil spring 52 which biases thepawl in the direction 53, as indicated by the arrow in Figure 2.
The pin 53 acts as a stop limiting the upward movement of the pawlin the direction 53 whereas the forward-edge of the slot 55 in the bottom of the handle F limits. the forward movement of the trigger id in the direction 58.
In operation the cap B may be removed and the enclosure X may be filled with grease, cream, paste, frosting or other plastic or viscous material.
When the material is filled in the. space, the member 39 should be drawn fully in the direction indicated by the arrow Bil so as to move the piston in the direction 5! (see Figure 2).
When the element 39 is moved in the direction 51 to draw the pistonvto full charged position, the trigger fill should be moved in the direction 52 so as to disengage the pawl 23, from the recess 21 in the tape D.
As soon as the space X is filled the cap B is applied andv then by: reciprocating the trigger do the piston C may be advanced by each full reciprocatiomthe spacing between the two openings or notches 2i forcing material through the At the Sametime, the element 35 will be moved in the reverse direction of the arrow Bil. This operation may be repeated until the chamber may be entirely emptied of plastic or viscous material.
The essential feature of the presentinvention residesin the tape D which eliminates the use of 'a long rodfor actuating the piston l'i. Such tape, instead of extending around to the outside of the cylinder, asindicated in Figure 2, may also bewound continuously around a roller 34 and then retracted by a spring when, the pawl E is released. 7
It is apparent the specific illustrations above shown have been given by way of illustration and 23, said pin 5| becap and closure, said cylinder having a rearward extension, a right angular hand grip portion extending transversely away from the end of said extension, a roller member positioned in said extension, a lever member pivotally mounted in said extension, and an actuating tape passing over said roller extending through said closure and connected to said piston and actuated by said lever member.
