E. M. POTTER APPLIANCE 1'0 FAGILITA'I'E TYING OF NECKTIES Filed Aug 13, 1921 FEWQQIZZZW .mqmmm Patented Mar. 24, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLIS M. POTTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
APPLIANCE TO FACILITATE TYIN'G OF NECKTIES.
Application filed August 13, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLIS M. POTTER, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of 90 Vest Broadway, New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and use ful Appliances to Facilitate Tying of Neckties, of whichthe following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in neck-ties generally, more especially to what is termed the four-inhand type.
The invention has for its object, among other purposes, principally to obviate the necessity of tying or forming the knot each time the tie is worn.
A further object is to provide for facilitating the application of the tie for use.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a form upon which the knot is made, the same being so constructed and shaped that when the tie is in use it is not distinguishable from a tie the knot of which is formed by hand in the usual 25 manner.
Another object of my invention is to provide a form upon which the knot is made having a passage therethrough for the free or smaller end portion of the tie after the same passes around the neck of the wearer.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved device with a four-in-hand type of tie applied thereto, and with portions of the form or device and tie cut away for clearness.
Figure 2 is a rear view of Figure 1 with the free end portion of the tie uninserted within the form, and with a portion of the tie cut away to disclose the rear structure of the form, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the form with the tie removed therefrom, the same illustrating its rear structure.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates a tubular body portion or member formed of suitable metal, the lower end portion of which has formed integral therewith a Serial No. 492,078.
downwardly pointed projection 2 upon which the smaller end portion A of a tie A is adapted to be impaled or caught, after the same passes through the tubular memher 1, as disclosed in thedrawings and here inafter described.
The upper end portion of the tubular member 1 is somewhat enlarged to form substantially a T-shaped head, the same being cut in a vertical plane to provide a front face 3 and a rear face 4, the latter being folded back, upon a slanting line, over the main body 1, or a portion thereof.
That portion of the form where the front face 3 and the rear face 4 substantially meet have formed therebetween an opening 5, through which the free end portion A of the tie is adapted to be inserted, as hereinafter described.
In applying a tie. of the type referred to upon my improved form, the rear face portion of the tie is placed upon the rear face 4 of the form, the same being applied thereto somewhat near that part of the tie where the knot is desired. In forming the knot, the enlarged end portion of the tie is then wrapped around the front face of the form, passing under the smaller portion, over the same and down between the front face of the form and the body of the tie. The enlarged end portion is then pulled down snugly upon the form, thus giving a correct appearance to the knot. The tie in this condition is now ready for use and it will be noted that the form is retained within the knot of the tie at all times.
In using the tie, the smaller end portion thereof is passed around the neck of the wearer and inserted through the opening 5 and down through the tubular member 1, where a slight pull upon the smaller end portion will cause the knot to fit snugly against the collar, the same being retained in that position by means of the projection 2 engaging a portion of the smaller end.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the vertically to form front and rear faces, a
