UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.4
HERBERT BLANDFORD, Ol-iV LOCKPORT, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO* FOLD EASY BOX CORPORATION, OF LOCKPORT, NEW YORK.
PAPER RECEPTACLZE.
Application led June 1,
To all whom t may concern:
Be itknown that I, HERBERT BLANDFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Receptacles, of which the following is a specication. l
This invention relates to folded blank boxes and more particularly to this class of articles wherein the blank from which the same is formed is so grooved or indented alongl certain lines as to produce a novel form of box which Iterm a stock box.
One of the objects of this invention is to so construct a box of this nature that the forward half of the lider cover may be readily elevated and swung rearwardly to vertical position and the front end of the box swung outwardly to horizontal position so as to present the goods or other contents of the box to full view for inspection byA a purchaser, clerk or other person or for continuous display of the goods. l
Another object of this invention is to provide the box with a plurality of locking members whereby certain of the members are arranged to maintain certain parts in stable assembled relation while the other of said members are arranged to maintain the movable parts secured together when in normal closed relation. 1
These and other objects will more fully appear and the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following specilication, the disclosures of the accompanying drawings, and the subject matter of the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box in closed position; Y D Fig. Q, is a View similar toY Fig. 1, excepting the front lid section and `front end of the box are shown in the respective positions which they assume when presenting the contents of the box to view;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on line Shi? of Fig. l looking' in the direction of the arrow;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the right-hand corner at the front of the box before the same is folded inwardly;
Fig. 5 is Va fragmentary sectional view through the left-hand corner of the box prior to the closing of the front lid section;
Fig. G is a horizontal sectional view on line 1923. serial No. 642,864.
6-6 of Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrow, and
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the box blank.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring first to the blank shown in Fig. 7, it will be noted that vthe blank is formed with the two parallellongitudinal grooved or indented lines 1 and the i transverse groovedor indented lines 2. These longitudinal and transverse grooved or indented linese'xteiid respectively from end to end or side to side of the blank. These grooved or indented lines'provide` the bottom 3 of the box, the rear vwall 4, 'and the sections 5 and 6 o-f the top of the box. The box is also providedwith the front wall 7 having the overlapping flap 8. The grooved or indented lines 1 provide for the two side walls 9, the side flaps 10 of the top, and' the flaps 11 at the ends of the front overlapping portion 8.
The edges of the blank are cut to form the outwardly curved corners 12 at the rear edge ofthe box top 5 and also at the corners of the flap 8 and the inwardly curved or concaved edges 13 at the upper corners of the rear wall 4 and the front wall 7. At the respective ends of the rear wall 4 and the front wall 7 are the grooved or indentedA lines 14 which extend from approximately the center of the inwardly curved edges 13 in oblique direction to the intersections of the longitudinal lines 1 and the transverse lines 2. These short grooved lines 14 provide for the inwardly extending folds at the respective corners of the box when the same is in setup position.
In proximity to the edges of the side walls 9 are formed the slots 15, and also formed in the overlapping portion. 8 adjacent its folded edge portion is the slot 16.
VFormed along the transverse center of the lid ortop ofthe box is the `grooved or indented line 17 whichextends from one longitudinal linel to the other, thus dividing the lid of the box `into the 1 sections 5 and t3. Beginning at the outer side edges of the cover of theV box and substantially in alignment with the grooved or indented line 17 and extending inwardly thereto the blank is stamped or otherwise cut so as to provide thc tongues 18 having oppositely disposed shoulders 19 formed therewith, from which shoulders 19 is formed the head Q0 to provide means .for locking portions of the box together. Also in proximity to the front edge of the front section 6 of the box lid there is stamped or otherwise cut a portion of the cardboard or other material of which the box is made` so as to provide a locking ineinber centrally of its side edges consisting of the tongue 18, shoulders r19 and the head 2Q, this tongue being identical with the two just described in the side edges of the box lid, the only difference being in the relative positioning of these `locking members. In forming the locking members 2O at the sides of ythe box lid there is also formed at the innerends of the flaps 10 of the lid sectiona and adjacent to `one side of the locking members 20 the projections 21 formedl with the under-cut recesses 22. Y
In setting up the box from the blankA shown in Fig. 7, the blank is bent along the line 2 between the ybottom 3 and the rear wall f4 wherein the member 4 will be disposed at right angles to the bottom 3 and the f bending inwardly 'of the short Jgrooved lines 14 will form the folds `at the `rear corners 4of the box as shown Aat 123 in Fig. 3. Subsequently the lid sections 5 and are turned forwardly yby being v'bent along the grooved lineQ between the rear wall 4 andthe lid section 5. This brings the lid sections 5 and 6 over the bottom 3 of the ebox, the side walls 9 of the box having been previously bent along the lines 1 to position ,the walls f9 at right -Iangles to the bottoni 3 and at the same time .the vfront wall v7 is raised .to a position at y right angles to the .bottom 3 by bending the same at the grooved line at theforward edge yof the 'bottom 3 and the bottom edge ofthe front wall 7, the oblique indented vlines 14 at the corners .beingbent inwardly at the right and yleft-hand front corners to form the inturned folds 24 shown 5in Figs; 4, 5 and 6, the flap 8 carried by the front wall 7 is then lfolded along its grooved line at right angles to the front wall 7 and parallel to the bottom 3 with its end flaps 11 `folded inwardly at vnight angles to the body :of ,the flap 8, the flaps 11 passing over .theend wall 7 and projecting downwardly to #the bottom 3 of the box adjacent the innerisides of the side walls 9. After the top lid sections and 6 are folded over the box the side locking heads 2() are seated in the slots 15 in the side walls 9 with the flaps 10 -of the lid section 5 extending along the inner sides of Jche side walls 9 towards the bottom of the box. This Asecures the bottim 3, rear wall 4 and the rear lid section 5 as well as the side walls 9 and the `flaps 10 o f thel rear lid section 5 in secure `assembled relation.
The front lid section 6 is adapted 4to Lbe bent along the grooved line 17 to provide hinged connection between the sections 5 and 6 .scithat when the lid sec-tion 6 is also folded down upon .the box the side flaps 10 thereof are folded upon the grooved line adjacent thereto so that the aps may pass freely within the box engaging the .inner sides of the side walls 9 and seat between the same and the flaps 11 of the overlapping section 8 -offt-he .front wall 7. The locking head 9.0 at the front edge of the lid section 6 is seat ed inithe slot `16.of the overlapping member 8 of the front wall, so that, the box assumes the closed' position as shown in Fig. 1.
Then it is desirous to display `the contents of the .box the locking member 20 yat fthe front edgeofy the lid section 6 is disengaged from the slot 16,and due to `the `grooved line 17 is swung upwardly and rearwardly with the upper edges fof `the side wal-ls 9 seated in the recesses 22 with the lprojections 121 in they outer sides ofthe side walls 9 for maintaining :the v`lid section 6 in I.vertical Aposition. Thereafter the overlapping member 8 is pulled vforwardly carrying with it'the front wall 7 of the bo-x until `the member S and wall 7 assume horizontal position, this being readily provided for .by the inturned folds 24atthe respective `front corners .of the box, the partsand positions just gdeseribed being .clearly shown in Fig. ,2 .of `the drawings. After the ,goods ,have been displayed the forward movable members 4of the box may L.then `be returned rto Vtheir normal closed positions in the manner hereinbefore de scribed. 1
The foregoing described and illustrated box constituting ymy invention supplies a much needed article inthe nature of a stock box -Ifor use in stores and ,the like and is primarily designed for containing samples of goods, the forward Jportions of the box being readily manipulated so `as to expose to view its contents and thereafter .readily closed. f
Alterations and variations may be made fromtilne to-timc .as `may be deemed expedient and which will neither #depart from the spirit of .the invention nor the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure .by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a box having side .walls provided with incisions and having a yfront wall provided with a. fiap, a cover having front and :rear hingedly .connected sections, the rear sectionef the cover being provided at y opposite ends with 'tongues adaptedk to be received in said incisions whereby to lock the rear section yin position and the forward portion of said front section being provided with a tongue adapted to be extended through said iap Ito secure the front `section in position.
2. In -a box, the vcombination of sides, front .and Arear walls, of a cover `hinged Ato the rearwall and consisting of front and llfl rear hingedly connected sections, the rear section of the cover being provided with means engaging the side walls to hold the side walls and the rear section of the cover in assembled position, the front wall of the box beingprovided with an overhanging flap, said Hap and said front section of the cover being provided with means whereby the same are detachably connected.
3. In a. box of the character specified comprising` a bottom, side walls and rear wall, infolding members at the intersections of said rear wall and said side walls, a rear lid section carried by said rear wall, locking means carried by said rear lid section for engaging locking means in said side walls for maintaining these parts 1n secure assembled relation, a swinging i'ront wall for said box, an overlapping member carried by the upper edge of said front wall, a swinging front lid section at the :torward'edge of said rear lid section adapted to be swung downwardly upon the overlapping member of said front wall for closing the forward end portion of said bo-X, means in said overlapping section of said front wall, and a locking member carried by said front lid section for engaging the locking means of said overlapping member, whereby to secure the movable members at the front end of the boX in secure assembled relation.
