EDITH 1v;v GARLAND, or s'r; AULQMINNEso'rAL our HOLDER.
Application filed February 25, 1922 Serial No. 539,134.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enrrrr M. GARLAND,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Paul, in the county of Ramsey and Stateof Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cup Holders, of which the following is a specification;
My invention consists of an improved holder for drinking receptacles, and is particularly designed for removably holding paper cups, its object being to provide a simple and cheap form of device for conveniently holding the ordinary paper cups,
and improved means being provided where by the device may be collapsed to permit convenient packing away when not-in use.
To this end my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of my device shown supporting a paper cup.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device col-- lapsed. I
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Figure Figs. 4, 5 and 6 inclusive, are detail .views illustrating a locking joint between the upper cup holding ring and side bars, and
Fig. 7 is a detail of the'bottom of the device.
My improved holder, as shown. comprises a pair of side bars-2, formed attheir. upper ends with curved finger grips 3.' Pivotally supported between theside bars by the pivots l and Sis-the upper ring 6 and the lower ring or bottom 7. The lower ring 7 is prefer-ably formed with a solid bottom 8 to constitute a rest for the bottom of the cup 9.
To hold the rings 6 and 7 in collapsed position, the upper ring is formed with a projection 10. adapted tosnap into a recess 11 in the side bar. and'the lower ring is formed with a projection 12 adapted to snap into a recess 13 in the adjacent side bar.
hen the holder is not in use the rings o and 7 may be turned into alinement with I the side bars as shown in Fig. 6 and held locked in this folded position by the projections 10 and 12 interlocking with the recesses 11 and 13. lVhen thus folded the holder ,may be conveniently packed away.
. My improved x holder is particularlyadapted for picnic purposes, lunch kits, eto.,-
where it is desirable to use paper cups and to save the. work of carrying along and washing ordinary drinking vessels, the outwardly curved handles making. it easy to handle the holder in passing it from one to another without the users fingers coming in contact with the hot cup, where hot beverages are used. y By forming the lower ring with a solid bottom, a fiat support for the cup is secured, and cups ofdifl'erent sizes maybe used and held in the pro-per position within the holder. j
I do not restrict myself to forming the lower ring with a solid bottom. By provid ing locking means between. the rings and side bars, I may in different ways modify" the construction within the scope of the invention as set forth in the followingclaims.
I claim 1.. A cup holder: comprising side members one of which has a recess, a cup supporting. ring I between the members and pivotally connected to each for swinging therebetween 'to folded position, and a projection carried by the ring and engageable iin the recess'of said side member to securethe ring folded. 9'. A. cup holder comprising side members one of which has a recess, a cup supporting ring formed of a stripof metal and having overlapping ends, said ring pivotally mountedbe tween the side members for folding therebetween, and one overlapping end having ajprojection interlocking with the recess when'the ring is inY folded position to secure. the ring in said folded position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signa- .ture. f
. EDITH M. GARLAND.
