ZM@ I UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES It. RATHBUBT AND HENRY SHAIV, OF IVORCESTEB, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,015, dated July 14, 1874; application tiled May 16, 1874.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES li. RATH- BUN and HENRY SHAW, of Worcester, Worcester county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and Inlproved Sad-Iron, of which the following is a specication:
The invention will iirst be fully described, and then pointed out in the clain Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of our improved sad-iron handle, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the iron with two holes, B, bored in it close together, near the center ot' the top, in its longitudinal axis, said holes being slightly inclined from each other from the top downward. G represents the standards, which are jointed together at D, and below the joint have the vertical portion E tted to enter the holes. Above the joint they branch apart wide enough to receive the wood handle F between them. This handle has a rod, G, extending through it, with a screw-threaded projection, H, at one end screwing into one standard, and a square and round projection, I J, at the other end passing through a square hole in the standard, and having the cam K pivoted to its end. The cam is arranged to press the standards toward the handle when turned downward, so asvto cause the parts E to bind in the holes, and thus make the handle fast to the iron.
The holes and the standards may be made to accomplish the saine result by pressing the standards in opposite directions.
A key or a screw-nut may be used instead of the cani.
By releasing the cam, and shit'tin g the round part J ot' the rod into the hole ot' the standard, the rod inay be turned to adjust the handle for holes B, more or less distant from each other, or orp different sizes, and to regulate the binding pressure. I The square part I prevents the wood handle from turning 1n the standard.
Having thus described our invention, we claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters latent- The combination, with standards C C, jointed at D, and having ends E E, ofthe rod G, made fast to the upper end of one standard C, eX- tending loosely through the other, and provided with pivoted cani-lever K, all as shown and described.
