To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. CHURCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Pump, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pump.
One object of the invention is to provide in a pump, a novel means for connecting the whereby said rod may be readily attached to the traveling valve in the well, and as readily detached therefrom, and withdrawn leaving said valve in the working barrel.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a pump a novel form of separable coupling whereby two parts or sections may be connected together, for simultaneous movement or disconnected.
With the above and other objects inview this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation, and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and" illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figures 1 and 2, respectively, show fragmentary side elevations, partly in section, of
the upper and lower parts of the working" barrel, with the traveling and standing valves therein.
Figures 3 and 4 show side elevations partly in section, of the upper and lower ends, respectively of the means for connecting the sucker rod to, and disengaging it from, the traveling valve.
Figure 5 shows a cross sectional view thereof, taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 shows a cross sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures,
the numeral 1 designates the working barrel of the pump, which is suspended in the well bore by the pump tubing which extends to the surface of the ground in the usual way.
Located in the lower end of the barrel there is the usual standing valve (not fully shown) which isequipped with the valve cage 4, having the upstanding, outwardly threaded nipple 5 which has the" nut 6 threaded onto the upper end thereof, and 2 whose upper face '7, is preferably knurled, or toothed.
Above the standing valve thereis a traveling valve, or plunger. This plunger has the inner tubular barrel 8 with the upper andlower nipples 9 and 10, threaded thereon.
The nipple 10 clamps the valve seat 11 be tween it and the lower end: of the barrel o,
which is controlled, by the upwardly open-' ing ball valve 12. -A cross pin 13 in'the barrel 8, above the valve 12, limits the up-= ward movement of said valve. The lower end of'the nipple 10 is contracted and downwardly extended forming the tubular coupling member 14 which is internally threaded, and provided with the side ports 15, 15,
above the threads.
On the upper end of the nipple 9 there is the 'valve'seat 16 which is clamped in place by the valve cage 17, screwed onto "the upper end of the nipple 9. An upwardly opening valve 18 controls the seat 16] and is confined by the cage 17. The upper end of this cage has an upwardly extending blank neck 19.
On the barrel 8, andfclamped between the 1 nipples 9 and 10, there is a sectionafliner- 20, preferably formed of cast iron but which may be made of steel, if desired.
In order to connect the sucker rod to the" traveling valve, Ihave provided a connecting rod 21 whose upper end is outwardly threaded to receive the lower end of the sucker rod. There is asectional tubular housing 22 whose upper end has an inwardly" L turned flange 23 forming a bearing through which said rod extends. This rod has the annular shoulders 24 and 25 above and below said bearing, respectively. I
The lower end of the rod 21 is outwardly threaded to receive the nut 26 which is screwed onto the lower end thereof, and
whose lower end is toothed. The lower end of the housing 22 has an inwardly convergingseat 27, and within said lower end there is a tubular clamp member 28 whose upper end is internally threaded, and whose lower end is slitted forming the clamp jaws 29 whose inner faces are toothed, and whose lower ends are inwardly beveled to conform to the shape of the seat 27. In operation the upper end of the neck 19 ofthe traveling valve is clamped and held by the jaws 29, said jaws being held contracted aroundsaid. neck by the converging seat 27. While in ing a tubular housing Whose lower end is contracted forming a tapering seat, a tubular clamp member in the housing whose lower end is formed with clamp jaws which normally rests on said seat, a rod slidable in said housing above said clamp member, means for limiting the movement of said rod relative to said housing, said rod and clamp member being formed, one with an internally threaded socket and the other with an externally threaded neck adapted to be screwed into said socket, and a nut threaded onto said neck.

In separable coupling a housing one end of which is formed with a converging seat, a clamp member in the housing, clamp jaws carried by said clamp member arranged to rest on said seat, an actuating member slidable in the other end of the housing, means for limiting the range of movement of said actuating member relative to the housing, said actuating member and clamp being formed with means whereby they may be interlocked together.
11. In a separable coupling a housing one end of which is formed with a converging seat, a clamp member in the housing, clamp jaws carried by said clamp member arranged to rest on said seat, an actuating member slidable in the other end of the housing, means for limiting the range of movement of said actuating member relative to the housing, said actuating member and clamp being formed with means where by they may be interlocked together, and a stop within said clamp member;
