UNITED STATES RUBY Hungria, or sT. Louis, ivrrssounr.
mun OURLER.
Application filed November-.26, 1923. sera] No.` G77-,155.,
ToA all/wimmelt may concern:
eitknownthatl, RUBY Hunris, a citizen of the United`rr States, residing at` St. Louis, and 4State of ,-Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers; and I do' declare the.following to be a full, clear, and exactv description ofgfthe inventiom such as .willr4 enable others skilled in the art to whichwit lappertainsto make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hair curlers, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive, yet an efficient and desirable device of this character which will effectively curl either bobbed or long hair.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description beingV supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is an edge view.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Figure 3 is a detail longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a detail transverse section as indicated by line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates an elongated body preferably bent from a single piece of wire and having parallel side members 2 connected at one end by a straight bight portion 3, the free ends of said side members being connected by a head 4 which is relatively immovable. This head is formed with Va pair of inwardly turned hooks 5 and 6 disposed at opposite sides of the plane of the body 1. The head is preferably of a novel construction yet tobe described.
One or more arms for clamping the body 1 against the ends of the hair, preparatory to, wrapping the hair upon said body, are provided. In the present instance two arms are shown as constructed of two lengths of wire 7 having eyes 8 at one end by means of which they are pivotally connected to the bight ends o the wires 7 are engageable with the hook 5 as shown. v l
For clamping the hair after wrapping upon the body 1,'additional arms are provided at the side of said body remote from the first mentioned arms, said additional arms preferably consisting of two longitudinally undulated wires 9 having eyes 10 straddling the eyes 8 and pivotally surroundportion 3 of the body 1. The other ing the bigiayporaon: e ofsaiabodyi. frirel undulations of the arms. 94-'9 leftectively accommodate ythe hair and assist ini properlyjcurling the same, when saidY arms.. are, engagedwith the hook 6. To, insure. tight'.v
grip of the endsof the hair, the arms 7447*,v
are lpreferably .bowed .longitudinally to ,lie between theV side members 2, at .-itsintermediate portion'. i
In constructing thehead 4, I- preferably make use of-two thicknessesof sheet metal 11, disposed in the plane of the body 1 and extending between the free ends of its side members 2, said thicknesses of metal being preferably formed fromV a single metal plate and being bent at 12 around the side members 2, to secure them thereto. The outer edge portions of the thicknesses 11 have integral flanges which are bent inwardly toward the outer sides of said thicknesses, to form the hooks 5 and 6. By constructing the head in this manner, it may be easily and inexpensively manufactured, yet will perform the desired functions. l V
When using the. device, the ends of the hair are placed across the body land the arms 7-7 are swung inwardly and hooked.
to clamp the body and hair together. Then the body is rolled to wrap thehair thereon and finally the arms 9-9 are clamped on the outer side of the hair and engaged with the hook 6. The hair may either be rolled inwardly or outwardly, as desired, and in either case, an exceptionally pleasing curling effect is produced, whether on bobbedhair or long hair.
As excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed, they are preferably 2. A hair curler comprising an elongated 3 l U-shaped body having parallel side members, two thicknesses of metal in the plane of said body and extending between` the free ends of said side members, said thick.-
nesses being bent around said side members to secure them thereto and having integral flanges at their outer edges, said flanges being bent inwardly toward the outer sides of said thicknesses of metal to form a pair of hooks, and a pair of arms each pivoted at one end to the bight portion of said body, the other ends of said arms being engageable with said hooks when swung oppositely toward said body.
3. A hair ourler comprising an elongated body having spaced parallel side members, a pair of arms pivoted at one end to one end of said body said arms being bowed throughout their entire length to lie between said side members, a sec-ond pair of Varms pivoted at one end to one end or said body and movable outwardly in the opposite direction from said bowed arms and 20 means rigidly connected to the outer ends of the side members oi' said body for oonneoting the free ends of said arms with said body.
4. A hair ourler Comprising an elongated 'body having spaced parallel side members,
arms formed of two lengths of wire each of which is pivotally connected at one end to one end of the body and bowed throughout In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature. f
