AUTO DOOR LOCK.

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER KozLow- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Penturen, county of Roseau, and State of Minnesota, and I, JOHN MEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Penturen, county of Roseau, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in door latches, especially for use on automobile and other public conveyances where a means is required to hold the door in a closed position when not in use, having for its object, among other things, to so arrange and design the parts that a downward pressure of the hand upon the handle will actuate the latch.
To these and other ends, our invention consists in the latch having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved door latch with the cover plate removed for clearness of illustration.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of Figure 1 with part of a door attached as shown by dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of door latch with cover plate removed and latch mechanism shown in actuated position.
Figure 4 is a horizontal cross section on line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a vertical section on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figures 6 and 7 are detail views of the latch.
Figures 8 and 9 are detail views of the latch handle.
Figures 10 and 11 are side elevations of door latches for right and left side doors respectively.
In the practice of our invention we provide a casing 1 having a cover plate 2 upon the face thereof and secured thereto by means of screws 3, and within which is slidably mounted latch 4, having at one end the usual shaped end 5, guided in a suitable channel 19, the opposite end being provided with a prong shaped fork 6, which is laterally guided in suitable channels 7. The fork end .the latch outwardly. On one side of latch 4 is a projecting cam surface 10, said cam surface being in alignment with a cam surface 11 carried on one side of latch plunger 12, the latch being guided in a suitable channel 13, opposite end of said latch plunger being fork shaped and having shanks 16, and vertically disposed thereto in recesses 15, are pressure springs 17 which normally exert their pressure upward so as to keep cam faces 10 and 11 disengaged, hereby keeping latch 4 and knob 18 in their respectively normal positions.
Springs 9 and 17 are kept in place by suitable cover plates 20 and 21. Casing 1 is provided with suitable holes for securing the proposed door latch to any door by means of bolts 23.
In operation, assuming the door latch to be in its normal position, the end 5 of latch 4 is retracted by the downward pressure upon knob 18 carried on the upper end of latch plunger 12, this downward movement causes cam face 11 on latch plunger 12 to ride against cam face 10 of latch 4, hereby causing latch 4 to reciprocate laterally and hereby bringing end 5 of the latch in alignment with the end of easing 1 as is best illustrated in Figure 3 of drawings, thus allowing door to be opened.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A door latch comprising a casing, a plunger slidably mounted therein and operative from beyond the casing, a latch slidably mounted in the casing and adapted to be projected beyond the same, said plunger and latch crossing each other within the casing and each being formed within the crossing region with cooperating inclined surfaces to cause movement of the latch in the movement of the plunger, both plunger and latch being extended in both direct-ions beyond the crossing region for guiding cooperation with the casing.
