COMBINED COMB AND BRUSH.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CALVIN LEON PLATER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Combs and Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toilet articles and more particularly to a combined comb and brush. Ordinaril one will dress ones hair with a comb an then smooth the hair with a brush, the comb and brush being employed as separate toilet articles. The present invention, however, contemplates the provlslon, in a single art-101e,

' of a comb and brush bearing such relation to each other that the two may be emplo ed simultaneously, the comb passing rst through the hair, and the brush followin the comb to smooth the hair as it is combe Another object of the invention is to so position the comb member of the article with relation to the brush as to adapt the article to be employed in simultaneously combing and brushing the hair.

The article embodying the invention comprises a brush back which is indicated by the numeral 1 and which is of wood or any other material found suitable for the purpose and usually employed in the manufacture of ordinary brush backs, and the said back is recessed in one face as indicated by the numeral 2, co-accommodate the usual filling 3 in which the tufts of bristles 4c are embedded at their inner ends. Said back is provided with the usual handle which is indicated by the numeral 5 and which, as usual, extends from one end of the said back. So far as the present invention is concerned, the brush back 1 may be of any desired contour and size and, as previously stated, of a suitable material.

The comb member of the article is indicated in general by the numeral 6 and the same comprises a back 7 and a lon 'tudinal series of comb teeth 8 which pro ect in a common plane from the said back. In order to adapt the brush back 1 for the assemblage therewith of the comb member 6, the said brush back at one side of its recess 2 is beveled as indicated by the numeral a) to conform to the contour of one side of. the back 7 of the comb member, and

the said comb member is assembled with the brush back with the said side of its back fitting snugly against the bevel 9, and any suitable securing means, indicated by the numeral 10, may be employed for securing the comb member in place. In the present instance, the securing means is in the nature of a plurality of screws which are fitted through openings in the comb back and have their shanks threaded into the beveled side of the brush back, and in such a case it will no doubt be preferable to countersink the heads of the screws some distance within the comb back and fill the countersinks, as indicated by the numeral 11, with some material closely resembling the material of the comb back, so as to render the securing means inaccessible and thus enhance the attractive appearance of the article.

It will be observed that the teeth 8 of the comb member extend u wardly and outwardly from the recessed ace of the brush back 1 with the extremities of theteeth occupying substantially the same plane as the bristle surface of the brush member of the article. It will now be apparent that/ in the use of the. article, it will be employed substantially in the same manner as an ordinary brush but when applied to the head, the comb or, more specifically, the teeth of the comb member, will first pass through the hair and will be immediately followed by the bristle surface of the article so that the hair is combed and brushed at one operation. It will also be evident that the article may be applied to the head at such an angle as to permit of the comb being employed alone in thoroughly combing the hair, and the article then applied to the head in a manner to'render both the comb and the brush part thereof effective. Likewise, it will be evident that by tilting the article to another angular position, the brush alone may be em loyed in dressing the hair. Therefore, it will be evident that the pres ent invention contemplates the provision of an article which embodies means adapting it for use both as a brush and as a comb, thereby obviating the necessit of employing such toilet articles separate y. Another advantage presented by the article is that in article immediately follows the comb portion thereof, the hair is brushed down substantially at the time it is combed and, therefore, the strands of hair cannot become dis- 5 arranged as would otherwise be the case.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

A hair-dressing toilet article com rising a brush member including a bac 1 bristles extending from one face thereof,

and

said face of the back at one side of the assemblage of bristles being. beveled, and a comb member having its back secured to the brush back in engagement with the said beveled portion thereof and havin teeth extending outwardly from the sai back of the comb member and at an angle to the V said face of the back.
